Help! I want to learn more!

I’m Indigenous from Canada (Métis & Plains Cree), and have been studying history and Indigenous studies in university for the last three years. Through my program, I was fortunate to get to meet some Indigenous students from Sydney earlier this year, only to realize that I know next to nothing about native cultures in Australia.

I was wondering if anybody could point me in the right direction to reading material or lectures about indigenous history in Australia, as well as contemporary culture and social issues, ideally from an Indigenous perspective. I’m very keen to learn more, and appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks!

Looking for some Aboriginal comic books. And Aboriginal science fiction books. If so want to do a comic book or book swap for those? If so maybe we can work something out?

So you know how people say how many generations Australian they are?

So if we have been here for roughly 65000 years and let’s just use 70 as the life of someone even though I’m sure it wasn’t the same throughout history does that mean we’re all 928th generation Australian lol?

Can I use aboriginal artwork in the background of this piece I made or is that cultural appropriation?

Using Indigenous Place in daily language as a white Australian

I don’t have an Indigenous Australian or Torres Strait Islander background, but I have begun using Indigenous place names in my daily speech and when I am writing (eg. I took a plane to Adelaide, Kaurna land).

I took on this new habit from friends (their heritage is European like me) who told me they “went to Meanjin last Christmas”. Doing so has got me researching local cultures and their ways of life and cultures and it’s been very insightful for me.

I just want to make sure I’m being respectful when I do this. Is this okay for me to do? Is it appropriation, or disrespectful? I don’t think it is, but I wanted to ask Indigenous Australian peoples first.

On the other hand, what do you think of it?

Positivity Thread

I'm kinda sick of "what we ain't". I'd rather a thread for "Hey, we're awesome!" Gimme (or your own mob) some kicks.

No politics. As an example, I was one of the fastest runners at school. Picked last for "reasons", but holy fark I could run as a kid. When I saw Kathy Freeman do her thing I was blown away.

what was/is the day to day diet of an Aboriginal person in the bush?

I know it's a general question but maybe just answer to best of knowledge/own experience.

I ask because I'm curious. They seemed to be very healthy individuals based on early photos I have seen (notwithstanding accidents/childhood deaths etc obviously) and I think it would be helpful to understand their diet to see what we could learn from it, if anything.

Ideally a breakdown too. So OK we know they ate meat. But more meat than us as a % of total food? Or less?

If not too much to ask. Thank you :)

Art

I'm creating a story and I want to have some art.

The characters have markings which are in a similar design style to Aboriginal Austalian art, and Im curious if it's offensive to do so.

I'm Aboriginal in decent, however I was never raised on Aboriginal culture, so I believe I need other people's perspectives on the situation

Arnhem Land and Makasar

I just came across video about the interactions between Aboriginals and people from Makasar/other parts of Modern Day Indonesia.

One video showcased a man "Don Wininba Ganambarr" who said he visited his family in the 70s in Makasar who were decendants of his grandmother's sister who was taken to Makasar in the early 1900s.

Are there others here from Northern Territory who have solid links to family in Makasar through oral or tangible evidence?

Alice Springs

Hi all, I am Indigenous but grew up in Perth city, not on Country. Just curious what the thoughts are of the members here about the recent unrest in AS? Just curious about the opinions of other Indigenous folks rather than the comments in the threads for the news stories that are generally from non-Indigenous people and coming from only one perspective. What might be a solution? Hope this isn't disrespectful to ask.

I live in the United States - How do I know that I'm purchasing a high quality Didgeridoo?

Recently, I stumbled across a couple studies in which they found that playing the Didgeridoo regularly can apparently help treat sleep apnea. As someone with sleep apnea, this is of great interest to me.

I'm also a musician. Among other instruments, I play something called the low whistle and enjoy it greatly. Playing the low whistle feels like a kind of meditation to me, and from what I can see of the Didgeridoo I can only imagine this is even more true in its case.

That said, even though I'm a beginner I would like to get a relatively high-quality Didgeridoo that I can grow into over the coming months and years. So naturally, I've been looking at various online stores (of which there are many). Each store seems to make similar claims as to the quality of their instruments and I simply don't know how to make an informed decision.

The only one that I feel somewhat comfortable about buying so far might be one like this (is this Aboriginal made?). They say that they select these unpainted ones for the best combination of sound quality, playability, and cost. Would this be considered a high quality Didgeridoo with a good sound quality? And if not, how much might I have to spend for one and where might I look for it?

I read this over on didjshop.com and it's pretty much the reason I'm here lol - I just don't know who to trust or how to make a good decision. I would greatly appreciate any help and guidance that could be offered!

Question for the mods - Can we somehow stop the thread vandalism

For fairly obvious reasons, we will often get people come in here asking questions. Sometimes they are ill informed, ignorant or simply racist.

Often they will quickly realise how shitty their question is and they will delete their post which just kills threads and conversations which need to be had.

Is there a way we can do something to minimise this?

Happy Birthday in Wurundjeri?

Hello everyone,

Apologies if I'm not on the right sub. I recently arrived in Melbourne and I realized I knew very little about the local language. I'm from the Basque country where the local language is quite strong and it's common to see things written in Basque everywhere (I have seen a few "Wominjeka" around but not much more than that). As I dug a bit, I was able to find some lists of Wurundjeri words but none of them had: "Happy Birthday" on them.

If there are any Wurundjeri speaking peole around, how would you say it?

Side question: as I was not being able to find birthday wishes, it got me wondering. I know there are many different aboriginal cultures. Are birthday wishes a thing in your own? If not, are there any celebrations linked to individuals to highlight time passing?

Interested to hear your individual perspectives.

Do you feel that other minority groups in Australia are actively listening and trying to engage with Aboriginal issues? If so, who do you value as allies? If not, would you like to see more intersectional communication? Do you think there could be potential conflicts of interest with any specific groups?

I know a lot of other non-Indigenous people who want to see situations improve, but they don't have the insight or resources to get much done beyond voting and raising awareness. Additionally, there is the massive culture divide between urban and rural areas. Especially with immigrants and socially progressive folk typically clustering in cities.

Hope this makes sense, and sorry for the word vomit. I haven't slept in a while.
