New to zambia

Hello hello, just moved to zambia 2 weeks ago. As you get older you realise you can't just hop on to a different continent and make friends like I used to when I was 16. I am a Computer Science student who Majored in AI, I love fashion, tech, success tings, drinking here and there. Where do the cool kids hang out in lusaka? Of I google the bars etc but where does young man go to build some meaningful connections?

P.S. any Cs students watchu currently working on?

Much love thank you

USAID

So USAID has just vanished into thin air ? So all the drought relief, water/sanitation assistance and Malaria assistance all gone. Am sure all those expats who were cooking the figures to the american govt and benefiting from those million dollar contracts will have to go back. Am sure they will be back in some 4 years time

Why I prefer dealing with Foreign Vendors & Traders

Anyone who's lived in a Zambian suburb (or the closest we can get to one if you can call them that) has at least had some level of frustration when dealing with local vendors and shop traders. While people may have their issues with East African migrant/asylee workers (Burundians, Rwandese & Ethiopians), I feel like they are necessary to our local economy because of the competition they bring to our often slouchy informal entrepreneurs. If I want to purchase an item from them in my neighborhood shop with a larger note, it's rare that I'll be told they don't have change or they'll often be scrambling to make sure you'll get it regardless of what item you're buying. The same applies to mobile money transactions (either deposits or withdrawals) especially now that we don't buy scratch cards to load up airtime. The difference is glaring when you're dealing with a local doing the same business. You'll either get told to buy something more pricey to get that change, be told they don't have it (even when you can see they clearly do) or get an outward aura of nonchalance with no sense of urgency towards you as a customer. As the African Continental Trade Agreement ramps up, I sure do hope we have more legal pathways for migrant workers to fill certain sectors of our economy because I feel they have a much better work ethic than our locals. Whether it's in bluecollar sectors like plumbing, bricklaying, tailoring, car repairs or more formalized industries like tech, I feel like this is what we need as a country to spur competition and better service delivery.

No one wants to hear this. But the cheifs....

Either the chiefs go through years of management classes and other qualifications that they'd need to run a community or they all get dissolved. From a place of knowledge they Highkey make me upset.

Networking

Zambian born living here in the U.K for the last 20 plus years. Recently moved to the north west of the country between Manchester and Liverpool. Wondering if there are other fellow Zambians in this part of the world wanting to connect amd perhaps try to achieve some solidarity for living away from our homeland.

Loan Apps in Zambia: Pa First Ni Soft💵, Pa Last Ni Funeral🙆‍♀️

I just finished paying back K1,700 on these loan apps in Zambia, and I have to say, it’s a dark path. Once you start, it’s hard to stop. It all began last November when a friend introduced me to them, and wow… what a ride.

The interest rates on these apps are ridiculously high. The maximum repayment period they offer is 14 days, but in most cases, it’s just 7days. And the harassment? It starts even before the due date! They’ll flood you with calls and texts, and the way they talk to you is insane. They’ll insult you and your entire generation without hesitation.

Despite seeing countless Facebook posts from people saying they don’t pay back and that the loan officers eventually stop calling, I just couldn’t do it. These people will harass you, push you into depression, and even make you feel suicidal. It’s not worth it!

Lets keep our financial record clean! Right now, I barely have a coin in my account, and the temptation to borrow again is real, but I have to resist it. Never again. I’d rather stay broke because you can’t put a price on the peace of mind and relief that comes with being debt-free.

No matter how urgent your situation is, don’t fall for it. It’s not worth the stress. Once you start, you’ll keep going back.

“Only 5% of Zambians make over K20,000 per month”

Hi so I remember coming across some data in the form of a graph that indicated that only about 5% of Zambians are making about K250,000 per year. I’ve been looking everywhere for it and I can’t seem to find it now. Would anyone know which one I’m referring to and can share it with me?

I’m trying to collect data on Zambian incomes because I’m an investment advisor.

So far I have just found data stating that only about 20% of Zambians make more than K7500 but I’d like to know what percentage of Zambians are making above K20,000

42% of interns in Zambia make over K7500 per month

I was reading last year’s labor report from Ministry of labor and it stated that 42% of interns make over K7500.

So I’m wondering if any of you are interns or know any interns and that are making K7500 and where are you interning?

Personally I have a full time job that makes above that but I’d love to know if there really are those types of opportunities here cause the 42% rate is quite high.

Buying a used car within Zambia

If I want to buy a used car within Zambia, one that starts well and moves me from point A to point B, how much do you estimate it will cost to buy. Disclaimer I do not care if it has other problems such as no radio or Aircon not working or airbag missing. It should start and go. Also aside from Facebook marketplace where else can I check for such ?

No place like home

What's up everyone.

I live in the U.K with my wife and two sons. I'm originally from Kitwe and recently have had an undying desire to move back to my motherland but I'm going to struggle trying to convince my wife to see my point of view and agree with the change.

I know that Zambia has its fair share of issues, not to mention all of the load shedding but I really don't see myself suffering in this cold climate for the next three decades.

Has anyone been in my position before and if so how did you manage it? It is getting to the stage where the marriage is suffering and will inevitably end taking with it what's left of my mental well being.

Hoping to have a chat with anybody listening on some ideas for moving forward.

Cheers guys.

Motorbikes in Lusaka

I can't help but notice that the number of motorbikes on the streets of Lusaka has been steadily increasing over the past couple of years. I'm not too sure what to think about it but I think Lusaka will slowly lose it's charm and become like every other generic African city (looking at you Lagos). What are your thoughts about this?
