Subreddit for the greatest video game ever made. Xenogears is a 1998 JRPG Sci-Fi epic, published by Squaresoft and released on the PlayStation. It was directed by Tetsuya Takahashi, and written by he and his wife Kaori Tanaka (alias Soraya Saga). Xenogears tells the story of Fei Fong Wong and a group of dynamic followers, as they journey across the world to overthrow an all-powerful and mysterious organization.
Xenogears (ゼノギアス Zenogiasu?) is a science-fiction role-playing video game developed and published by Squaresoft (now Square Enix) for Sony's PlayStation. It was released on February 11, 1998 in Japan and on October 20, 1998 in North America. The game was never released in PAL territories. It was re-released by Squaresoft as a Greatest Hits title in 2003, and on the PlayStation Network on June 25, 2008 in Japan and on February 22, 2011 in North America.
Xenogears follows protagonist Fei Fong Wong and several others as they journey to uncover the truth behind mysterious, cabalistic entities operating in their world. The principles and philosophies of Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung influence the plot, character design, and world of Xenogears. Additionally, the symbols, theological concepts, and devotional practices of several world religions are represented in fictionalized forms in the game.
Major psychological themes are the nature of identity and human memory, particularly as these relate to the phenomenon of dissociative identity disorder. The relationship between humanity and machines is central to the game's plot, as indicated by the presence of giant robots dubbed "gears," which almost each playable character can control.
Overall, Xenogears was well received by critics, with a 91% rating on Game Rankings and a score of 83 out of 100 at Metacritic. It was voted the 16th best video game of all time by readers of Famitsu in 2006. Xenogears has shipped 1.19 million copies worldwide as of March 31, 2003.

Bf surprised me again with more Xeno merch, and he’s considering doing his second play though! This is peak romance. 🥹
Don’t get me wrong, I love the guy. But could they not have made him a liiiitle more balanced? 😂 I just finished the game for the first time and bros basically the most accomplished person in the universe with seemingly no end to his skills and knowledge.
When miang takes over Elly and then Billy states that all human were created to resurrect deus and Miang replies with "but it wasn't just to restore its old body ". Is there another purpose to some humans? Also she implies than Billy, Rico, etc are reincarnations as well or did she simply mean that they just got.lucky genetically
Here is the dialogue from the scene
Elly:Yes. But it wasn't just to restore its old body. More than half of Deus is constructed of biological parts. Do you remember those mutated humans? Those are all people who were destined to become replacement parts for Deus.
Billy:We humans are... parts for god...
Elly:Yes, almost all the people are destined to become parts for Deus. But you people gathered here are all different. You could say... you escaped that destiny by existing through multiple generations.. In actuality, there wasn't enough parts for Deus... But, Krelian compensated for what was lacking. The reduction in the number of parts, was due to humans living through multiple generations... but that defeciency in the human factor, was made up for by the nanomachines created by Krelian. Not only that, but his nanomachines added additional functions. Deus has evolved into the ultimate weapon
I just turned 36. I first played Xenosaga Episode 1 in 2003 and followed it up with Xenogears come 2005.
I'm well aware of the power of nostalgia. I sometimes wonder if I have just become 'old man yells at clouds"?
But I met someone who just went through Xenogears for the first time, and they fully agreed with me that "post-Xeno depression" is a real thing. They were so struck by how great Xenogears is, how brilliant and unique, that they decided to get into Xenosaga and Xenoblade ahead of other JRPGs.
Of course there are still great JRPGs being made to this day. But are there great JRPGs like Xenogears still being made? That is a whole other question, and the answer seems to be no.
Maybe they should let Soraya Saga write....

(this tweet was deleted and it still bugs me. I want to know why)
i did all the steps in the instructions and when i start the game none of the patches are applied do you know if i am missing a step or if im doing something wrong
Would love to have these in the collection some day.
Bf picked this up for me yesterday. Only 10 bucks. Discs are in perfect condition 😍❤️
I have a 1440p monitor and I was wondering what settings I should change on the game properties for Ducktstation so the game is looking at its best. Does anyone know a good combination of post-processing shaders I can use on Duckstation too?
I did come across the wiki guide of setting it up on Retroarch but I would like to avoid using Retroarch and was wondering if there was an optimal guide solely for Duckstation.
I already have the Perfect Works patches applied to my .iso files and plan on using the HD Portraits Project with Xenogears too.
Can you re-enter the stalactite caves? I noticed this time through that Ol' Man Bal is carrying a frame for Heimdall which is stronger than what you can get at the base. I couldn't buy it without Heimdall, though, and I can't get back in.
I tried running around the little cave near Bledavik and no luck.
Does anyone have an instant win or anything code for it, I'm getting to old to be able to think fast enough and my hands cramp when i try to run and mash the shoulder buttons. I could skip it but then my perfectionist ocd yells at me.. please help
Am I doing something wrong, or can the game be broken as such that selecting booster does nothing? Even the little UI text always says off, even the next round after turning on. Feeling really stupid, about 25hrs in (just starting Babel Tower), and cant get it to work yet
The Xenogears and Xenosaga Study Guide now has more Xenogears interviews published for anyone interested in the development of the game. The latest one is an interview from the March 1998 Famitsu PS magazine: https://xenogearsxenosagastudyguide.blogspot.com/p/march-1998-famitsu-ps-interview.html
Not too long ago, in July, an early Preview interview from the November 28, 1997 issue of Weekly Famitsu was also posted: https://xenogearsxenosagastudyguide.blogspot.com/p/xenogears-weekly-famitsu-preview.html
I am a massive fan of the Xenoblade series, but never got to play Xenogears or the Xenosaga series. I found Xenogears at a garage sale this past weekend and discovered I could use an emulator to play it on my PC (Pretty decent PC with an RTX 4070 Ti GPU).
With that in mind, I've seen mention of mods/texture packs/etc to make the game run better and with improved visuals. I'd love to hear your suggestions on Best Emulators and the settings/mods/etc you use to get the best experience out of the game. I've heard it's one of the best stories of the whole Xeno franchise, but I'm worried that the really dated feel might prevent me from enjoying it if it's stuttering/lagging or looking visually distorted.
u/Dedroll_ is the artist if anyone likes this style and wants to commission him for more.
Was talking this over in r/Xenosaga. XG and XS1 were some of my first JRPGs ever so I did not realize how unique they were. This is both a good and a bad thing. On the positive side, they are incredibly ambitious and after 20 years I only respect them more and more for their daring storytelling.
On the less positive side...I've never played a JRPG besides these two where there's just zero music in dungeons. A video game soundtrack is pivotal to me. There is not a single video game I love where I could not instantly name all of my favorite songs in it. So the total lack of music in many dungeons of XG is jus...hard for me to tolerate after all this time and playing many other jrpgs.
Also tell me what dungeons I might be missing, if any, because I'm still pretty sure the majority of XG dungeons do in fact have zero music.
