• Genre: MxM Romance, can be combined with any other genre.
• Main Goal: Consistency. The idea is to write every single day. It can be as little as we want, it can be crappy, as long as we put words down. The point isn't to create a pretty story, it is to create a habit. To practice without overthinking.
We'll collaborate by deciding on a place to start with the bare basics, and then "pants" our way from there as we take turns writing.
• Writing/experience level: No experience needed. Though, decent punctuation would be appreciated.
• Meeting place: Either entirely on Discord, or we keep discussions on Discord while we do our writing on a shared Google Docs.
• Max size: I'd like the practice to be one-on-one. However if there's enough interest then I'm thinking we could create a "lobby" of sorts, where we could share progress and struggles, maybe hold small short term challenges, or change practice partner if the compatibility is lacking with the current one, etc. In which case, max 10 people perhaps? Not a hard line. Small enough that we don't get lost in the crowd.
If you're interested, please leave a comment stating whether you'd want both, or just the one-on-one practice! That way if there's several responses, people can still find each other in the comment section even if nothing comes of the group thing ;)
For later events within my series Flow of Arcane, I have a plan for events that put The Mythic World against Modern Day Military & Technology. Though, not being someone of a Military background... My best sources of reference are movies and what have you. In my belief, our modern day Militaries, Weaponry, and Technology can reasonably contend with beings of mythology despite their calibur in power. My scenes of reference for a basis understanding out the vase sources would be The 2007 Transformers Film with Scorponok attacking Lenox's team in Qatar, apologizes if I don't get the name right, and 2013 Man of Steel where Superman fought both Faora-ul & Nam-ek.
Edit: apparently, people are misunderstanding what I mean by proficiency... I do not mean the firepower, I mean how modern military are able to coordinate, respond, work together, and analyze their opponents on the fly to respond with the right methods. Scorponok was a surprise combatant, but Lenox's team was able to call for support. That support was able to send a servalince drone to see the threat, quickly supply air support, and understand what is the most ideal means for attack. That is what i mean by proficiency.
Are these good examples of mordent day Military proficiency as a general base, or are there other sources I should look at? Especially since I am fully aware that both scenes mainly use The US Military. Though, as a counterargument, wouldn't it make sense to use one of the best Military forces as a reference? I am open to suggestions and feedback. I appreciate your help.
And Word has no history or recovery for it. Not a reason.
I did absolutely hours of major first draft edits yesterday. Then saved it and went to bed. Opened it today and none of the edits were present. Nothing to recover. This was part of a major rewrite. I have lost all motivation now. I was literally about to buy the cover and start setting releases in stone. Guess I better get used to emailing them to myself again.
So werid question I kinda am doing a rewrite for a passion project. Have you seen the movie Charming on Netflix? If you did do you have any thoughts on it? Did you like it did you hate it? And what changes would you make? I have some ideas but I'm asking eveyone what do you think?
I am currently conflicted with how I want to end my book. I am still in the planning stages so this could obviously change throughout the writing process, but I wanted some other writer's opinions on it. My idea, right now, is to have one of the main characters die, as the antagonist watches it happen. The end of the book would leave a mystery to what happens next with the villain. Let me know your thoughts and I could always provide more book context!!
Hi! Im currently writing a novel where the main character stays in a mental hospital for a brief time, but I dont want to misrepresent what its like inside one as Ive never been in one. If comfortable, would anyone whos been admitted to one or worked at one be willing to share what it was like? Thanks!
I recently came up which this really good book idea that I want to write, I know the generals of the story but haven't planned in details, don't know how I want it to start or end. Are there any tips you could give ? Or maybe apps that have helped you before ?
This is a thread for submitting and critiquing prose.
New to Critiquing?
Any suggestions are welcomed! To give some context about myself, my English speaking and writing skills are fairly mediocre, so I’ve been trying to improve these aspects. I’m also a uni student, though it might be a little late to start, but I’m willing to do what it takes
Some of the habits I’m trying to cultivate:
• Reading: Fictional books, news articles and also on Reddit as well haha
Whenever I come across good phrases/ words, I would note them down and collate them in another document. So when I’m writing a summary of what I read, I’ll try to incorporate these words/phrases into it. But sometimes, I would say, the things I’m reading don’t fall into the same category, so it’s hard for me to retain all these information since they’re not exactly applicable in all settings
• Podcasts: Similar to what I did for reading, i would also note down some of the phrasings I like and make use of them when I write the summary/ learning points
The thing is I have the habit of highlighting and jolting down whatever I feel that’s interesting or could be useful in the future. And now I just have a whole bunch of notes, and I don’t know how to start. Because some are for casual use and some are more formal. So I’m kinda confused? Or should I jumble them up, and read through them daily
That’s why I’m feeling so overwhelmed, maybe I should focus on specific things and not everything at once?
Sorry if my writing is messy!
I have these two romance ideas to write but I'm stuck on which one to start with.
One is about a girl in 1958 which is like a coming of age + romance, while the other one is a fantasy romance about an arranged marriage. I want to publish one of these idea if I go through with it i just don't know which one.
I'm looking for 1 dedicated writer -- more of a pantser. I'd like to take on the art/design, marketing, editing, and planning tasks; while adding internal monologue/detail to the drafts, and help to keep things rolling whenever the writer gets stuck. I'd provide chapter outlines in small volume-like batches, to be discussed and revised as a group prior to first draft. A third collaborator taking on a similarly versatile role to myself might be considered, depending on project direction.
My Potential Inspirations*: Witcher, His Dark Materials, Hunger Games, ASoIaF, LotR, Redwall, Attack on Titan, Shangri-La Frontier, Death Note.*
Ever happened that you’re reading a story you wrote yourself.. and you feel like it’s not really yours? Like it had taken a life of its own and morphed into something you hadn’t intended.. you hadn’t comprehended.. Like you’d entered a trance where the story unfolded into something more, something grander than what your original plan. Ever happened?
Last time I started, I had a great hook but then I ran into a place where I didn't believe in a critical bit of worldbuilding. Even skipping over that... They're being stalked by a bugbear that can track one of them magically and she complains to them about how the one character's mother will skin her alive if she doesn't take him home, but yet she didn't just grab him and drag him there despite his inability to really fight against her.
Someone told me that my MC should have some sort of Disney Princess "I want" song. While I think it's not required for all stories, I think not having one does require a few other things to be solid.
I have enough worldbuilding experience that I can pull details up as the plot demands them and then go back for foreshadowing. I'm a pantser so I don't want to spend much time on planning out what happens because my characters could decide to do something completely different.
I’m making an experimental animation film, which is made mostly with monotype prints and a little bit of live action footage. It’s about the feeling of repetitively revisiting and trying to make sense of the past (particularly trying to figure out why a relationship ended) and how things become distorted in our mind through reliving them. Most of the images revolve around the home, and it uses a lot of repetition and fragmentation/ frames within the frame, and is structured in a way that is continually interrupted by intertitles with the phrase ‘I’m starting over’ which causes the whole thing to start over again (as in ‘I’m replaying the memory again), with the visuals becoming more and more degraded each time it starts over, until the last time where the phrase ‘I’m starting over’ denotes making the decision to move on and accept not always being able to figure out the past, at which point we see the final frame which is the only full-frame, non split screen image of the whole film (a tree). The film is also ‘narrated’ throughout with text on the screen, in often quite fragmented ways, with pieces of text disappearing and reappearing and interacting in different ways, so it would be amazing to have a title that echoes that in some way. I like the idea of the title having a repetitive element in it, (even better if it could have repeating elements, and then a word that’s more stand alone, echoing the structure of the film) or if the title could have a sense of fragmentation within it. Some other visual elements that occur throughout the film are windows, flowers and shadows (maybe that could be useful!).
One idea that came to mind was something like ‘until until until it breaks’ - I also had the idea ‘the difference between (why it happened that way and what didn’t)’ but it’s a bit of a mouthful! Or possibly something with the format ‘(blank) forwards (blank) back’ or just something involving the prefix re- (like ‘rereturn’ or something)
I also really like the title of the songs ‘whatever fits together’ by skullcrusher, or ‘forwards beckon rebound’ by adrianne lenker, and thought maybe something similar to those would work?
Any ideas (or feedback on my suggestions) would be much appreciated - thank you!
I just got Reddit for this one post, and I'd really appreciate any sort of response (sorry for the length). I'm a young author in middle-school and I'm not very experienced in the Sci-Fi genre. I'm going to explain my idea for the planet the story is set on, and I'd appreciate some feedback on if it's realistic or if I need to make a few changes, or if I need to make it more or less subtle (plus if you could offer some alternative names to the regions and planet, you get bonus points).
The planet is called Ethron. It was once a regular, life sustaining planet. It's a bit smaller than Earth and it had a mountain range circling it horizontally (my friend told me that the anime One-Piece- I've never seen it- had a similar mountain range, let me know if I should change it and your alternative ideas). The planet has a LOT of ocean moons around it, some of which are VERY close (in some areas you can reach out and touch the water). The magnetic field around the planet is relatively weak compared to Earth, but the planet is far enough away from the sun that it can survive, yet close enough to stay warm.
Then, one day, a massive asteroid brushing over part of the mountain range which circled the planet and in consequence, the whole planet was flipped on it's side and the gravitational status was so disrupted that it stopped spinning. The tectonic plates of the planet had a sudden and massive shift, causing a ridiculous amount of water on the planet to be subducted into the mantle. The planets volcanoes went dormant. Also, it was knocked closer to the sun. So, now the East of the now vertical mountain range is permanently facing the sun (forever day), and the west is permanently facing away (forever night).
Over the years, the East became a vast desert and wasteland (60 degrees Celsius). The remaining water was evaporated. The West became a desolate and dangerous Tundra (-20 degrees Celsius). The remaining water froze.
On the East side, the inhabitants harvest water from the closest of the Ocean moons, the ones that do not break the atmosphere. On the West, they use technology to melt and drink the ice.
The planet is now dead and dormant. The people must use the remaining resources of it to survive, and eventually escape. The two sides are at war, fighting over resources and land. However, there is only one battleground... Recall the asteroid that brushed over the mountain range. It created a valley, and the only way to cross between the two sides, since the mountains are too tall and harsh to survive. So, the two sides are locked in an infinite battle in the valley, trying to break through the defenses. However, even if they did, the extreme change in climate would kill anyone who tried. That doesn't stop them from trying. They are desperate.
The planet is rich with a rare metal that is perfect for interstellar travel. However, the atmosphere is so dangerous and the magnetic shield so weak that any ships that try to leave are instantly destroyed by solar flares and intense heat. It seems there is no hope (that is where the plot comes in, I won't put it in THIS post, but ask if you're interested).
OKAY, this last part is a stretch. The Ocean moons around Ethron don't revolve, they remain in the same spot forever. Eclipses are super common, since Ethron still revolves around the center star, and it is often blocked by the many moons. Another option is that the moons DO revolve, but that would take away from a cool aspect of the West side moons being frozen and the East side moons being burning hot and the fact that corrupt empires scam citizens by monopolizing the moons. Tell me your thoughts on this.
I appreciate it so much if you read the whole thing, and I'd appreciate it even more if you would comment your thoughts; I really need them. Again, I didn't put the plot in this post, but I might make another or you can just ask.
I’m a new writer, I think, I’ve never gotten to finishing any of the works I start (motivation thing) but I really enjoy writing, especially fantasy worlds, since you can make anything up and bam, it’s now cannon in that world. I’m planning to write this one based if a dream I had, can’t remember much, but that’s normally how it goes for me when I write; I have an idea and the rest pieces together, that’s just how I write, I find trying to write it all down and plot the whole story just doesn’t work for me, I’m not sure how to explain it, my brain can’t rack every idea I might come up with and plan it all through, I’m not sure if anyone else also is the same but I’m sure someone will understand what I mean.
I’ll try to explain it, any advice/suggestions would be appreciated
Anyway, it’s somewhat inspired from the Mash and Muscles anime, I had just started watching it the previous night, so like the mc goes to the famous magic academy n stuff. She has a magic type that is rare, there is another student who has it too, they befriend each other over time, I’ll just refer to her as a fl as I plan to make her the love interest, I want this to a be relaxed type of thing, not too much action (I’m not really sure how to write battle scenes, I just can’t figure out how to word it all). With some romance and healing from past trauma on the side. I believe from I think I’ve been told by either a teacher or a friend that the mc should have a goal, which I fully decided yet for would be a goal that slings with her character.
I don’t have any names yet (I’m shit with names), but the mc is a more quiet and reserved person, a lot her trauma stems from her childhood where her inability to control her magic costed her her parents lives. She is an over thinker and procrastinator, mainly doing assessments last minute (like me haha).
The fl, whom I want to try and make a mix of Yumiella Dolkness, Saiki k, and Mash, a more nonchalant character that doesn’t have much interest in being with others she’s more open about her feelings and isn’t afraid to fight or threaten someone if she sees the situation fit to do so. She is from a high ranking noble family and would very casually slip in the questing of asking the mc to become her consort (kind of like a character that doesn’t necessarily care too much for politics, mainly from her ability). If any of that makes sense.
I’m unsure when it comes to slang too, about if it’s okay for me to use modern slang or not, as well as how developed the society is, since they use magic I’d say they’re still well developed, I just don’t know whether it’s a good idea for modern technology or language to be included.
I’ll give a quick explanation of the mc and fl’s abilities:
I’m calling it Beast Magic; they can use the magical and physical properties of the creature their somewhat born as, like, the mc has wolf ears, tails, and sharper teeth and nails as her beats magic is of a wolf, while the fl is a dragon (ik it may seem cliche, dragon x weaker creature). They can use magic that aligns with said creature and have some personality traits adapted based on how the creatures act and behave. (E.g, mc has a bit of bloodthirst as the wolves in this world are much more savage). But there are items specifically made for users of this magic to control any sorts of urges along this line.
Not sure if it makes complete sense to anyone, but if it does make enough for people to piece it together any ideas to help would be really appreciated. Apologies if anything is spelt wrong on this and if asked I will try my best to explain anything I can. (Apologies if something was done wrong on the app, just got it)
I’m currently in the process of forming my thesis (Masters in architecture). Looking for some procedural advice here: I am currently reading a lot, Zizek, Lacan— it’s getting pretty heady, which I like — and then following that, stringing together my opinions and references towards legible, logically ordered thought. Which way do other people form their thesis? Do you read, write about it, read some more, reference, or what? What order of operations do people take when writing? I’m curious to hear other people’s writing processes, and the logic behind them. Thank you!!
Also, if anyone’s interested, my proposal question is: How might architectural practice operating outside traditional notions of built form embrace surreality and hyperreality to tangibly manifest aesthetic tensions between conceptual frameworks related to the dynamic engagement between body & environment?
For a crime thriller story of mine, a witness in a case is going into protection from the police. She packs her things, at her place, but wants to bring a specific item, that she does not want the police to know she has, because of ulterior motives.
The item is too big to fit in a pocket though, so she needs to carry it in a bag or case of some sort. I want the villains after her to make an attempt on her later, which leads to a shootout/chase, but after that is over, and she escapes, I still want her to have the item with her and not leave it behind.
Is it possible a woman could have an overnight bag on her, the whole time, during a shootout and chase, without ditching it for convenience of movement sake?
Thank you very much for any opinions on this. I really appreciate it!
I’ve written and submitted screenplays for feedback using paid services.
However, I’m new to novel writing. Are there similar, worthwhile services available for novels? (I have roughly 150 pages).
Thanks!
I’m writing a story and included a prologue about 2 pages and not sure if I should get rid of it and just put it in chapter 1.
And not like ones with a bunch of similes and metaphors
I want technical descriptions for WHAT is wrong, why their outraged and how that feels
Hello everyone! I'm starting to develop the idea for a new WIP. I'm wanting something super dark fantasy, sort of giving Dune vibes in the societal framework and themes. Something spiritual and dark in nature, maybe inspired by mythology? I'm thinking the FMC is the queen or ruler of a realm/kingdom but answers to a number of priestesses/religious figures. Maybe they control her and are actually working for the dark spiritual leader? Maybe something to do with a mating ceremony with someone that goes wrong somehow or she falls in love? Literally have no idea where this story should/will end.
I'm literally in day 1 of brainstorming but thought this would be a great place to get some inspiration and thoughts! Any recommendations for story, source material, other works I should read are welcome and appreciated!
Ive wanted to do comic-work for ages, but sadly due to severe ADHD brain, i get very distracted when writing,so thats where you would come in :)
The wide idea is creating a romance - tradgedy with two characters finding their true love, but both unfortunately feeling that they arent worthy of the others love. I have the design for the two main characters. if youre interested please do let me know, a lot is still open for imagination and id love to discuss it with you
I'm a 13 year old that Is looking into writing a story that I've been developing in my head for 5-7 years. I'm not writing it yet, mostly just getting it figured out and making sure I have the entire story planned out. I plan on making more in the future but that's not important, for now, I just want to get better at writing so that when I do write it, the readers enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it.
Two of my friends are also writing stories and I will probably be giving the advice I get to them as well.
I am up to join an existing group or we can create a new one.
Genre(s) : Progression Fantasy with focus on Magic System and Worldbuilding.
Goals : I like to go chapter by chapter in my writing , and my primary goal is just consistency.
Experience Level : What matters is ideas. Feel free to msg even if you are a beginner in writing.
Meeting Place : Discord > Telegram > Reddit.
Max Size : No upper cap.
What we could is first discuss and come up with a unified world setting and system and then advance the plot chapter by chapter. Or we could distribute the responsibilities like worldbuilding can be left to someone , writing can be left to someone , magic system can be left to someone else, like that. I am open to discussion.
I'm writing a crime thriller and in it a police officer is assigned to protect a witness in a case for the night.
He goes to her place to pick her up to take her to a motel/safehouse type location. As he picks her up, the villains also go there to make an attempt on her. I want her and the cop to escape. However, there are two ways I thought of this could happen.
The villains make their attempt in which shootout/chase stand off ensues and they end up getting away.
As the cop in the witness hurry to the car, get in and drive away, the villains hurry up to the car but just miss their shot as the car drives out of sight.
But does one execution sound better than the other? Thank you very much for any input on this. I really appreciate it.
Genre/s: Adult Fantasy, open to critiquing Sci-Fi as well
Goals/expectations/commitment: I am plotting out and beginning to write a novel. I’d love to find someone who can critique swap with me throughout the writing process so I can keep to a rough schedule and maintain a sense of direction. If there is a writing group out there for people at a similar skill level to me, I’d also love to join.
Writing/experience level: My background is mainly in academic writing. I have a B.A. in English Lit and I’m about a third of the way through an M.Ed. in English Ed, which means I’ve read widely and analyzed fiction deeply. However, this is my first time taking on a fiction writing project of my own.
Meeting place: Discord preferred
Genres : Any (further explained below)
Goals : Mainly just consistency.
Basically , we dive in to writing with minimal plot and only a vague idea for the world. We write everyday , no matter how little or how much. I could continue where you left off and you could continue where i left off. About the plot , we create it by stringing together and harmonising these small ideas that i am calling 'bites'. Bites can be shared by either of us at any time and are basically just your day to day inspiration put into words. Be it a YT video you are watching and a humourous scene comes up , or a book you are reading and an interestign idea comes to the fore , or just casually living life and you force ideas out of whats around you. I dont know how well i explained it , so you could dm me for examples. Also , i do realise you may not completely be sold on the idea of randomness driving the plot forward , but it is not gonna be entirely random (this is where the harmonising and the stringing and our discussions would come in). I am more interested in magical progression fantasy genre stories , but feel free to hit me up even if the genre you like is different.
Experience level : anyone and everyone is welcome even if your english is weak.
Meeting Place : Dm on reddit and we can decide either discord or telegram (i am more active there but we can continue on reddit too)
Max size for group : tbh , doesnt even matter.
My story is a crime thriller where a police officer vows to bring down a mystery group that is going around committing a series of kidnappings and sexual assaults. I was thinking of calling it either 'Revenge Solo' or 'The Revenger's Solo'.
But does one sound better than the other? Thank you very much for any input on this! I really appreciate it!
