Moving Recommendations

My family is looking to relocate to Whidbey Island. We know the area pretty well, but I am looking for suggestions for areas that are great for young families with toddlers/elementary age children? Looking for places with activities, but more so a place that young parents can make friends and feel supported as well.

The Book Rack in Oak Harbor

What?! Is this the same place? It’s quadrupled in size. I’m blown away. Families, queer folk, kids, BIPOC folks, sailors, gamers, EVERYONE in that store looked so happy to be there. And why wouldn’t they? Books, comics, games, cafe, models, gaming room... Their book selection focuses on fantasy/sci-fi, but this is my new go-to for my nerdy needs. I’m honestly just happy that this is a bookstore that is bucking the all-devouring online retail trend to create a desperately needed third place.

Anyone in South Whidbey going to Anacortes or Mount Vernon in the next few days?

I am looking for someone that would pick up a few bottles of the Circle K brand Ibuprofen, and deliver to me in Freeland area. There are stores in Anacortes, Mount Vernon, and Shorline, if anyone happens to be in those areas in the next few days and passing back by Freeland. The backstory is my mom has severe medication allergies, and the only OTC Ibuprofen I can find that is safe is that specific brand. $30cash + the cost of the Ibuprofen. DM me if you can help. Thanks!

New Here

I recently moved to the Coupeville section of the island. Facebook community sites seem to have more complaints than positives. Is this the norm?

moving to Whidbey with elderly parents

I'm moving to Washington this spring with my elderly parents and have focused my house hunt from Gig Harbor to Sequim and Whidbey Island. I'm self-employed so I can live anywhere. I found a house in Freeland that would work for us as far as living space but wondered if the hospital in Coupeville is decent and could we find primary care doctors taking new patients? My parents are used to traveling up to 1.5 hours to see specialists but they'd need a primary care doctor reasonably close. They are at the age where they are seeing different doctors fairly frequently. Would this be too difficult from Freeland?

Spots to walk a reactive dog near Clinton?

Hi folks, I'm considering renting a place in Clinton and would love some local insight. I have a reactive dog who needs her daily walks, but we need to be thoughtful about where we go to avoid stressful encounters with other dogs.

Looking for recommendations on quieter walking spots in or around Clinton where we could safely get our exercise. Maybe some less-traveled trails, quiet roads, or off-peak times at certain locations? Willing to drive a bit if needed.

Would especially appreciate hearing from other reactive dog owners about their experiences and strategies for peaceful walks in the area.

Tailor Recommendations?

Hi All,

Hope everyone is having a great day. Wondering if anyone can recommend a tailor for menswear. I have a suit, slacks, dress shirts, chinos, and a flannel that all need tailoring. They're all made with synthetic performance fabrics, if that matters. I live in Freeland. Looks like the options on Whidbey include

  • Freeland Cleaners
  • The Perfect Fit - in Oak Harbor

There's also Patrician Designs, but they're off until middle of January and not sure they do menswear.

I'm also happy to go off island if there's a better place on the mainland. Looking for high attention to detail, quality workmanship, and hopefully a fair price, but willing to pay more if that's what it takes. Thanks for your time!

You've probably seen him

Just a little PSA to the older gentleman in the little silver hatchback (Kia? Subaru? ..not sure) that picks up trash on the side of Hwy 20 in the central island/Coupeville area...

Thank you.

You are awesome, and are actively participating in making this a beautiful place to live.

PFAS in locally grown Whidbey Island food.

Just a heads up. Oak Harbor Waste/Sewage Management classifies and promotes our processed Class A "biosolid" sludge as a "Harbor Green" fertilizer for use on our local farms -at barely no cost. They promote it as healthy while also helping the local citizens out by reducing the waste facilities operating cost because they don't have to properly dispose of the biohazardous left overs.....

There is no requirement for farmers to disclose whether or not their land is infected with PFAS. It's common knowledge that by navy installations the ground water has come back with high results in multiple "forever chemicals". We should now be testing local farming land and the livestock.

Please be aware of what you eat and where it comes from. This is a problem from Maine to Texas to Whidbey. The EPA and local gov, needs to do more to protect our citizens.

It's absolutely appalling and another form of shady corporate greed..... This stuff is insidious and a real problem for everything we love about Whidbey (land/air/water). Its very unfortunate for the land owners with tainted land but we need to act now, and the government should be held liable. This is not our mess to clean up.

House Loss Resources (fire)

Hey, Whidbey, concerned friend here.

I have an acquaintance that lost their home and the contents therein to a total fire. No injury was suffered and it was them alone living in the home.

Without giving much more info, what are local resources to use for immediate aid (1 month use)?

I have suggested the following: GoodCheer Food Bank WAIF (their dog survived)

Unfortunately I don't know which other NonProfits in our county offer this type of assistance.

Any information or connections (referrals) would be greatly appreciated.

We are not looking for personal donations, thank you.

Logging in Saratoga woods?

Went for a walk in Putney/Saratoga woods, and saw a newly logged section of the forest. I thought that land was protected. What's up?

Christmas Light Show Open

The Annual Christmas Light Show is open every day from 6pm to 9pm until the end of the year. This is a drive through light show with 40,000 lights and music. This is our 28th year doing this. The show is located at Jerry & Lois Becks home 6504 Robin Ln, Clinton. Just 1/2 mile from the ferry. Easy to find when you’re on Deer Lake Rd… just look for the reflective signs or the large pole lights. Last year we had over 4,500 different cars visit. We hope you can find the time to come see the show… Merry Christmas…

New Year’s Day?

Hey there! My husband has the unfortunate luck of having a New Year’s Day birthday. I was thinking of a day trip to Whidbey, however, will anything be open? I’d hate to go all that way for most things to be closed due to the holiday. Thanks so much!

Help unloading trailer

Hi all, I just drove 25 hours here and know no one on the island. I have a 5x8 trailer of boxes I need help unloading (I can pay) into a split-level. I called a moving place and it was over $700, which I can’t afford at all. Thanks
