6am ferry from Mukilteo

Hello everyone! I don’t usually take the Mukilteo-Clinton ferry so I need some advice. I need to be on the 6am Mukilteo to Clinton so what time should I get to the terminal? I was thinking 5 to be safe but dont know if that is extreme. Thank you!

How's the bike theft situation on the island?

In cities it's foolish to leave nice bikes unattended, would that also apply to the small towns around the south end? Looking at getting a gravel bike ($$$) for cycling but it would be nice to do grocery runs with it as well (leave it locked outside Star Store or Payless, for example).

Navy Ball

Does anyone know why NAS Whidbey hasn’t had a Navy Ball since 2020? I’m assuming shut down because of COVID but is there any reason why it hasn’t started up again since?

Thinking of moving my family from the Midwest to whidbey

I recently visited whidbey island and the pnw for the first time and LOVED it. I can’t believe it took me 31 years to get out there. I’m really contemplating moving my family out there. I have a 2 year old and 5 month old. My dream life is having chickens, (maybe even a goat?!), a large veggie garden, catch crab and whatever else you can catch for food, and be outside as much as possible. I’d also love to buy 3-5 wooded acres & have a few tiny homes to rent out and have available for my family to come visit. Pnw is pricey so whidbey caught my eye. Still pricey but more affordable. My husband is a pharmacist so if anyone knows of somewhere hiring on the island or around that would be great! Remote works too.

Tell me about your life on whidbey! Mosquitos? Sense of community? Gyms? School systems? Land for sale or going for sale that you’d love to share with me? Seems aircraft noise is a thing so I’m looking into south whidbey but am open. Currently in Illinois the winters are brutal. Lows below zero and highs in the 20s. Usually from December-March is miserable. Hurts your face cold. Summers are hot like June-aug sometimes later now bc global warming it seems… I’m okay with rain, pnw rain seems more like a forever drizzle… but when would you say winter ends? What’s winter like? Do summers get pretty hot? I do love heat! I definitely want to visit in each season before making this choice. Anyone have rentals on whidbey? I came to mukilteo Oct 7-15 and I think we got lucky with weather. It was sunny almost every day!! Sometimes a drizzle and foggy morning but that was it I couldn’t believe it.

Also, do people ever cross the puget sound with their own boat? I stayed in mukilteo for 8 days and didn’t see many private boats. Maybe there’s not anywhere to dock? Maybe ferry’s say no this is our spot?

Where to eat in Oak Harbor?

If you had to pick two spots for dinner, any cuisine, in Oak Harbor, who would you pick?

Beer or cocktails a bonus.

Tsunami False Alarm

In the admiralty inlet area. Just heard the sirens go off, I was under the impression they only tested on the first Monday of the month. Called Island County emergency line and they confirmed today’s siren was just a test!

Moving a Boat

Hello Whidbey Island. I’m going to be moving a large boat soon and have hired Associated to do the move. They charge a day rate and I am only moving from the Oak Harbor Marina three miles. Looking to see if anyone else needs to move a boat soon we can schedule the same day and bring down cost.

What will happen to Whidbey Island when the “big one” comes?

Amidst all of the rumors going on about the “big one” coming any day now… with the sulfur smell and all of the mini earthquakes. It got me thinking about some family I have on Whidbey Island. What would happen to the islands in the Puget Sound during a 9.0 earthquake along the cascadian fault? Whidbey Island? Are they protected or will they completely be wiped? I can’t seem to find much about this online. I mainly see stuff about the tsunami hitting Seattle & other coastal cities but, not much on Whidbey and the surrounding islands. Thanks.

How do no bank homes stay dry in S. Whidbey?

Apologies in advance for what feels like a really dumb question. I love the no bank homes in South Whidbey and would love to retire to one. I’m from N.C. originally and all beach houses are on stilts because of storms. How do the no bank homes stay protected from salt water during storms? Thanks for humoring me….

Why does Whidbey Telecom have such outrages prices for fiber?

Lowest fiber plan is $80 for 100/100 Mbps. What year is this? That gives you 2Gbps symmetrical from Ziply telecom if you go a bit up north.

Register to vote, and vote in the 2024 elections!

On November 5th, Washington will vote not just for President, but for Congress, and for state and local offices. Register and vote so you'll have a say in what kind of country America will be!

In Washington, the deadline to register to vote online is October 28th. You can register here: https://www.sos.wa.gov/elections/register.aspx

If you miss this deadline, you can register in person through November 5th at a voting center in your county, or your County Elections Department (see their website for locations). See here for more information.

##Voting in person

All Washington voters who register by October 28th will be mailed a ballot. If you do not receive your mail ballot, or need to register and vote in person, you still have options.

Washington has early in-person voting from October 18th to November 4th at vote centers. See this map or your County Elections Department website for locations.

If you prefer, you can also vote at a vote center on Election Day, November 5th.

##Voting by mail

Mail ballots must be postmarked by November 5th, so mail your ballot back promptly. You can also personally deliver your ballot to any voting center or a dropbox - see this map or your County Elections Department website to find dropboxes in your county.

If you mail your ballot, you can track it here.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Paddleboarding Whidbey Island

Hi all! Are there any groups for SUP/paddleboarding on the island? I've done a couple trips since moving here and it's been breathtaking with the surrounding islands and scenery! I would love to connect with any others or groups that SUP on a regular basis, thanks!

(I would also love some suggestions on places to try!)

Whidbey trip in November

I’m taking my wife for a an overnight stay in November, to get away for her birthday weekend.

We have an Airbnb in Oak Harbor.

I’m new to the PNW, so not familiar with the weather or climate in November. We love the outside, and I plan to drive over deception pass on our journey in, and hopefully find some hiking around there.

If anyone has any guidance on:

  • winter activities
  • Main Street walking areas
  • vegetarian restaurants

I’d appreciate the recommendations!

Coffee

Hi 👋🏻 Staying with my family on the island (Coupeville) next week. I have a newborn, so the highlight of my day right now is my morning coffee. What’s the local favorite spot? Drink of choice is a latte if that matters.

Getting off the Island tomorrow....a little advice, please.

Hello.

We're vacationing in Langley and head back tomorrow. Calculating our (approx) commute time to the airport and considering Seattle traffic, we'd like to be on the 9am ferry.

That said...what time should we be out the door and getting in line? Never having done this before, I don't have any idea of how full the ferries get at approximately 9am and how many sailings we'd have to wait in line for.

Any savvy (and helpful) commuters out there who can lend some insight?

Thank you in advance.

BTW - It's really incredible here! I live in Portland now, but grew up in Seattle. We didn't spend much time on Whidbey, and I regret it. Looking forward to coming back regularly and spending time in this beautiful area.

Whidbey Island Trip with Infant and Toddler

Hi there, we’re planning a 2 day, 1 night trip to Whidbey Island with 4 adults and 2 kids (0, and almost 2). I would love some feedback on the following please:

  1. Ebey’s Landing: I’m planning on parking at the lot at the end of Ebey’s Landing Road and taking Bluff Trail. I don’t think my toddler will have the patience to be carried the entirety of the loop. The loop doesn’t appear to be one-way so I’m thinking of just going up Bluff Trail and then turning around and going back down the same way - is this possible? Also, does anyone know approximately how long of a walk (in minutes) it is up Bluff Trail until Perego’s Lagoon can be seen?

  2. Staying in Oak Harbor: we’re planning on staying overnight in Oak Harbor. We are Asian - will there be any issues with racism or safety concerns due to being Asian?

Thank you in advance for your advice.
