Rounded hard body around the root is the size of a medium sized nut and woody. Sprout is about 2 in long and 1 cm thick at this stage.

Found in deciduous young forest in SE Iowa. My guess is it's a hickory seedling?

It was not planted in the ground, I found it germinating on the surface of the soil.

I put it in some potting soil to see what happened. Unfortunately I damaged the stem a bit so I put some tape hoping it would at least keep oxygen out of the wound and let it close up.

There are growing right outside my house. I’ve been sitting outside for a little bit each day since I had surgery on my leg and this little guy was growing. It does smell somewhat sweet and has little pink tips.
