It is that time of year again, when the days get shorter, and our thoughts lead to holiday cheer with friends and family. The other specter of the holiday season is shopping for gifts and with less time this year to shop, many individuals will turn to online shopping. Whether that is Black Friday or Cyber Monday, people around the area will begin the hunt online. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you shop this holiday.
If you receive a text or email that states your package is being held and you need to click the link verify, don’t. These are examples of phishing messages, if you are concerned do not click the link, but rather validate with the online store or carrier directly.
Be aware of fake QR codes taking you to malicious websites, as consumers become more savvy in identifying phishing messages like those seen in the tip above, the next generation will use QR codes since it is more difficult to identify a malicious QR code visually.
Be aware of web and social media ads that click through to websites– these can sometimes be fake. Always go to the website directly, you are in control of where you go online and should not be directed by an advertisement.
Many fake sites or sellers will use images from other sources to appear legitimate. This why even on Amazon or Etsy, you will see the same image used by multiple companies.
If you don’t trust a website, don’t shop there or at least check the validity of a website from reviews (like Trustpilot) and hallmarks of a business-like address and contact information.
Ensure that your browser is using an encrypted website, seen with a closed padlock and HTTPS at the start of the website’s address.
Always use a credit card for online shopping. They offer much greater fraud protection than a debit card.
I hope these tips offer a safer online experience for everyone during the holidays. Wishing you a safe and wonderful holiday season from the Moraine Park Technical College IT Departments.

Hi there! We are having a celebration of life for my late grandmother in West Bend this summer, looking for a space for maybe 20 people to gather. Ideally it would be something like a reservable back room in a restaurant so we could offer refreshments. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! 🧡

Does anyone know of a reliable taxi service in the West Bend area the weekends? I feel like Uber or Lyft is hit or miss around midnight or later.
Where are the best spots to view holiday light displays?
Sorry to bother you fine people, but I've been listening to some talk radio blowhards go on and on about a fight at Badger Middle School. Involved a 14 year old boy punching a female student. They say there's video out there but they won't share it. Anyone have a link for that video? If this post breaks the rules, please feel free to delete. Thanks in advance.
We enjoy living in this town, especially after moving from the north side of Milwaukee. However, I’ve been commuting to work up near Appleton, and sometimes down in Milwaukee, and I notice that gas here is sometimes 40-80 cents more a gallon. At the mobile station in Lomira a couple months ago gas was 3.19, in town it was 3.89. Is this just how it is in the city/county? Are gas taxes that high? I’ve asked around town and nobody seems to know specifics besides “that’s just how it always is here”. That’s asinine.
Did anyone else lose water this morning? I was up at 4 and the water worked fine. Now we have no water. I assume it has something to do with the utilities construction they are doing during the week here on our street.
Hello everyone!

I have a degree in Anthropology and have spent several years working for a professional genealogy company. I have been working as an individual genealogist for about 6 years. If you have any questions about my research, please fill out an interest form or email: heritagehuntersgenealogy@gmail.com
For those of you with ancestry outside of Wisconsin, please send me a message. I’d be happy to help you or direct you to a better suited genealogist. Thanks!

Probably moving back this summer and I told my kid I'd like to take him to Toucan Custard. Is it still open?
Found this while taking a dump at a local gas station in West Bend
Far shot in hoping Denis didn't win or the other 3 school board shiesters.
Nick Stewart, school board candidate with Bill Schulz and Laurie Schloemer Aleven, has a ton of OWIs and operating with a revoked license. As recently as 2019. And the oldest ones in CCAP seem to be second/third offenses, so there's more.
What exactly is the mental health job he has at the VA hospital? That's alarming. He has no license in the state. Peer support? He was a firefighter? Where?
Have a hard time listening to him talk about school safety when there's a safety problem in his record. And I do hope he gets the help he needs, truly. Gotta be hard. But for right now, what else do we know about him? And what does it say about Bill Schulz and Laurie Schloemer Aleven that they'd put their politics over our town to run with this guy?
Anyone else worried about this election?

Moraine Park carpentry apprentices swept the podium at the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Apprenticeship Skill Competition on Jan. 27 in West Bend.
In total, 33 apprentices representing five technical colleges competed in four trades: carpentry, HVAC, electrical and plumbing. The Skills Competition was a day-long event with a four-hour practical competition and written exam.
Moraine Park apprentices placed top three in the carpentry category. Alison Gordee from Steve Wirtz Builders placed first, Ryan Sankey from Bob Anderson Builders placed second and Noah Kusserow from Bob Anderson Builders placed third.
Gordee, placing first in her trade, qualifies for the National Craft Championships (NCC) in Orlando, FL. She will represent the state and compete against other trainees from across the country in March.
“I am thankful for the people that have gone out of their way to congratulate me,” Gordee said. “Being there again as a 4th year, I was more determined to win. You know what mistakes to avoid, to stay focused on yourself, and to put your best work into it because you never know who might be watching.”
