Post Flair Guidelines

As you know, post flairs have been added to the subreddit and will soon be mandatory. This is a guide to each of the post flairs available to use.

  1. Discussion: Starting a discussion about something. Can also be used for a question intended to start a discussion.
  2. Question: Asking a question with the intent to get an answer. Questions intending more to start a discussion than get an answer should use Discussion.
  3. Picture: An image related to Al, for example, a detail in a music video. Memes should use Joke/Meme; sharing something Al posted to social media should use Posted by Al.
  4. Video: A video related to Al. If you're posting a song, by Al or not, use Song.
  5. Song: A video of a song, can be a song by Al, original of a parody, third-party music/lyric video, etc.
  6. Suggestion: A suggestion for the subreddit.
  7. Joke/Meme: A joke or meme related to Al. Pictures that aren't exactly a joke or meme but still intended to have comedic effect can use this flair, but non-comedic pictures should use Picture. Anything posted originally by Al should use Posted by Al.
  8. Article: An article posted by or about Al.
  9. Posted by Al: Anything that was shared by Al on his social media. This should take precedence over other applicable flairs, such as Picture and Joke/Meme.
  10. Other: Any post that doesn't fit very well into any of the other categories. Note that per Rule 1, your post should still be related to Al in some way.

To be pedantic...

Technically, most of Al's work doesn't actually count as parody. By legal definition, to be a parody, a song (or other work) but directly mock the source. That means songs like "Smells Like Nirvana" and "(This Song's Just) Six Words Long" are parodies, but "White and Nerdy", "Fat", "Can't Watch This", and so on don't count. Instead, most "parodies" actually fall under the categories of pastiche or satire.

A pastiche is similar in concept to a parody but celebrates, rather than mocks, the source, like an homage. It is included with parody as fair use in UK copyright law,[1] but I could not find specific details for the US.

In satire, a work is used to mock something else, unrelated to the original. For example, Al using "American Pie" to mock Star Wars in "The Saga Begins" is satire because the subject of mockery isn't related to the original song. Satire isn't covered under the US fair use doctrine.[2]

I am planning to make a Fan game about Weird Al. What would you want to see in this type of game.

I am small non-professional game dev who likes to make games about things I like. I started thinking about Weird Al having lots of creative parodies and original songs that could be quite interesting as a game. Probably around summer I will start the project which I am imagining as 2D mario style platformer where you jump on enemies and more. I am interesting in your guys opinion what could be interesting in this type of project or more. I am open for suggestions!

Original Pressings of Dr. Demento Basement Tapes CDs in stock!

Authentic unused original pressings of the long out-of-print volumes 6 through 17 of the Dr. Demento's Basement Tapes CDs are commercially available through Dr. Demento's official online store.
These CDs were initially an exclusive perk for Dr. Demento Society members but are now available to all while supplies last due to a warehouse find.

Here's a recap for what would catch Weird Al fans' eyes among the tracks. Majority of info is from DMDB

  • Volumes 6 has Yoda (demo) remixed for CD which has since been remastered for Medium Rarities and is available on Al's YouTube.
  • Volume 7 has a slightly edited recording of Al performing School Cafeteria live on KMET. This performance occured between the original airdate of the bedroom recording and the release date of the bathroom recording.
  • Volume 8 has Take Me Down which has since been remastered for Medium Rarities- another out of print release.
  • Volumes 9 has I Love Rocky Road (demo)
  • Volume 10 has Stop Draggin' My Car Around (Demo - 2nd vocal take)
  • Volume 11 has, to my understanding of a timeline pieced together from both Bermuda and Jeff's notes, Baby Likes Burping (first mix) that aired before the second mix was submitted. I could be wrong though.
  • Volume 12 has The Check's In The Mail (demo) which has never aired on The Dr. Demento Show and therefore is not yet available on The Dr. Demento Show streaming archive.
  • Volume 13 has Gotta Boogie (original) from the Placebo EP of Another One Rides The Bus that, per Jeff Morris' notes, was remixed for CD.
  • Volume 14 has You Don't Take Your Showers (live on KMET). This 1980 performance occured after the original recording submission aired in '79.
  • If you wonder what you should get from secondhand market... Here's the CDs with Weird Al tracks that aren't in stock,
    • It's Still Billy Joel To Me (Live) is on basement tapes 5. recording from King Biscuit's Flower Hour broadcast from the Trafalmadore. and a digital copy can be purchased through a little website called wolfgangs (I'm still surprised about that)
    • I'll Be Mellow When I'm Dead (Studio Recording) is on volume 3
    • Happy Birthday (Placebo EP Version) is on volume 6 from record; while the release of Permanent Record: Al In The Box is from master tape. Latter of which is on all major digital streaming/purchase platforms.
    • Pac-Man is on disc 4. Like Yoda (demo), you can hear a remaster on Al's YouTube channel whereas Medium Rarities is out of print.

For information like this and more, be on the lookout for a refurbished revitalized (and not just quietly enjoyed by Dave & Ethan) song list document I've been toiling away at on and off for several years.
I mean... it is up. It's always been up. but it's not ready for fanfare and re-linking on Reddit just yet.

Does anyone else just sing the Al parody of certain songs

I'm singing to my guinea pig, and I was singing "you're beautiful, you're beautiful, you're beautiful it's true" then because I don't actually know any other lyrics to that song I sang to him "your dog would just Rather play fetch by itself, still live with your mom and you're 42."

Anyone else like any Al parodies so much they don't bother with the actual song?

The Alpocalypse Tour video on Comedy Direct

I'm trying to buy The Alpocalypse Tour video from Comedy Direct. I keep getting the message "There was an error processing your checkout. Please try again." Comedy Direct is powered by Vimeo, and I've purchased other videos from Vimeo successfully. I don't know what's going wrong with this purchase.

Does Weird Al know Rob Zombie?

I know Rob Zombie likes his horror movies, and it seems like he's got a pretty good sense of humor. Maybe instead of stuff like 'The Munsters', Rob could bust out with a

I’ve been cosplaying as Weird Al at cons for years and yesterday, for the first time ever, I finally ran into another Al!

It was a glorious moment at C2E2 in Chicago yesterday. Definitely the highlight of the show for me (on the right)!

Favorite obscure song?

We all know and love Al's most famous songs, but what are some of your favorite "obscure" ones? These are usually either originals or parodies of songs or artists that no one remembers anymore. I love "Your Horoscope for Today" and "Frank's 2000'' TV".
