Technically, most of Al's work doesn't actually count as parody. By legal definition, to be a parody, a song (or other work) but directly mock the source. That means songs like "Smells Like Nirvana" and "(This Song's Just) Six Words Long" are parodies, but "White and Nerdy", "Fat", "Can't Watch This", and so on don't count. Instead, most "parodies" actually fall under the categories of pastiche or satire.
A pastiche is similar in concept to a parody but celebrates, rather than mocks, the source, like an homage. It is included with parody as fair use in UK copyright law,[1] but I could not find specific details for the US.
In satire, a work is used to mock something else, unrelated to the original. For example, Al using "American Pie" to mock Star Wars in "The Saga Begins" is satire because the subject of mockery isn't related to the original song. Satire isn't covered under the US fair use doctrine.[2]

I could have sworn this song was called prank phone calls not phony calls ? Mandela effect ?
How many non super fans realize that it’s a pastiche of “Mama I’m Coming Home” by Ozzy?
So I was on youtube listening to one of those "[song] but every other beat is [weird al's parody of said song]" videos on youtube and I searched for one for Smells Like Nirvana, because I couldn't find it I decided to make one myself using Fl Studio, still in the first minute splicing the two songs together, I decided to go with the parody first then the original but which version you think would sound better? the original first or the parody first?
It looks like everything you know is RIGHT, because you all chose "Everything You Know Is Wrong" as the track to beat from Bad Hair Day! I'm excited to see which song is chosen from the first Al-bum to feature his 25 year old "new" look, Running With Scissors! I won't need my horoscope for today to tell me which song will be picked- you all will be deciding soon enough! Grab ahold of your lucky, lucky autographed glow-in-the-dark snorkel, put down the pizza and beer, and let this saga begin!
There are a lot of articles saying it happened, but the video seems to have been taken down.
I've been making a personal playlist for a while and I'm adding some songs from a Medium Rarities playlist and there's some I don't see Al taking part in. If anyone can clarify, I'd love that. The songs in question:
Selected Readings from Oak Mot, Pt. 4 - Crispin Glover
Time - Ben Folds
I Melt With You - Richard Cheese
My Space - Evelyn Evelyn
Long Long Dream - Caspar Babypants
Featuring Eric Slick! Follow us on Instagram @weirdpalsmusic. Hoping to take this gig on the road soon…
Here are some facts:
The answer? I don't know. What do you think?
My favorite Weird Al song is "Everything You Know is Wrong" is this a bad song, or is it a good favorite?
Does anyone know what I’m talking about? Whose site was that?
Better late than never 🤷 Here’s blacklight skellie Weird Al performing in my Danse Macabre yard haunt from a few years ago.
Since I've been gone our next track has been chosen! It looks like Frank not only has a 2000" TV; he also has a spot on our roster!
This time, let's detangle the 1996 Al-bum, Bad Hair Day! Don't call in sick; you can vote for your song of choice from the comfort of your own home! Unless, of course, you shun fancy things like electricity.
Give me some of the worst Word Crimes that you've seen.
I AM SO HAPPY !!!
Hey all,
I've just recently started exploring Weird Al's discography, and have already picked up the UK Blu-Ray for UHF (which is weirdly hard to find) and Running with Scissors.
What should I get next?
Update 1 - I've just found an MP3 rip of the Medium Rarities collection from the Squeeze Box set, so I might burn a CD for the collection.
Update 2 - I've added the Ultimate Video Collection DVD to the collection.
