Question about the Volapük language and its community?

Hi! Recently, I've become interested in the Volapük language. It seems fascinating, but I’m not really sure where to start, and I have a few questions:

  • How do people learn Volapük? Which resources would you recommend for someone starting from absolute zero?
  • How do people learn to speak Volapük if there isn’t much video content (from what I could find)? How do you go about learning the phonetics?
  • Are there communities where people try to communicate in Volapük? Are there content creators or people who write publications in Volapük? Are there fluent speakers?
  • If there is a community, what is it like? Is it welcoming to newcomers, or is it more closed off?
  • Is the community generally supportive of people creating songs or videos in Volapük? Are there any artists who make music in Volapük?

I'd also really appreciate hearing about your personal experience with the language so I can get a better sense of whether it’s worth, or not, starting this journey.

Thank you in advance!

Short poem in Volapük

I've written this small poem dedicated to Volapük. (Excuse my Vp., it's not my first language.)

If spikolöv obi, olifob
ab if glömolöv obi, odeadob.
No binob fasilik ab danöfik.
No binob bäldik ab nenfinik.

Translation:

If you talk me, I will live
but if you forget me, I will die.
I am not easy but thankful.
I am not old but eternal.

Which is better, the Hand-Book of Volapük or Volapük: An Easy Method of Acquiring the Universal Language Constructed by Johann Martin Schleyer?

So first off, I specifically want to learn Volapük Rigik, hence the older books. I also like using physical books over online sources when available, and these two books are available to me. Which do y’all think is better?

A question about the genitive

Glidis flens obik! I've been learning Volapük for some weeks now and yesterday I was learning about the genitive case and the possesive pronouns and a question came up and I hope you can answer it:

In the sentence "I read his book", how would it be translated using both "oma" and "omik"? Does the word "buk" have to have the accusative mark? Because it fits the question of the accusative "What am I reading?" - "his book". So, how it would be? "Reidob buk oba/obik" or "Reidob buki oba/obik".

Another issue I have related with the previous question is whether a word with -a must follow the same rules of the adjective -ik. For example: "Logob omikis cilis" could it be "Logob oba(i)s cilis". Can it be like that?

Thanks for your help in advance!

Ralph Midgley

I just wanted to let the Volapuk community know that Ralph Midgley died last week. He was very active in the Volapuk community until his failing sight prevented this. Volapuk was a big part of Ralph's life, and I do hope it will continue to thrive. RIP Ralph (1929 - 2024).
