Spoilers in submissions:
If your submission contain spoilers, mark it as spoilers after submitting, like this.
If there are untagged spoilers in your submission, mark it as spoilers.
When to use spoiler tags:
In threads not marked as spoilers always use spoiler tags everywhere in the comments.
In threads that are marked as spoilers: no need to use spoiler tags, but keep the submitter's level of knowledge about the VN in mind. Play it safe.
Always use spoiler tags in threads that are not about one specific VN. The only exceptions are series (e.g. Ace Attorney), but only if OP makes it clear that discussing all games in a series without spoiler tags is okay.
How to use spoiler tags:
Hide spoilers like this: >!hidden spoilery text!< which shows up as hidden spoilery text. Make sure there are no spaces at the beginning and end of the spoiler tag because this will break it for users on http://old.reddit.com/. In other words do this: properly hidden spoiler, but not this: >! broken spoiler tag !<
Furigana:
To use furigana in your posts, use the following syntax:
[正義の味方](#fg "せいぎのみかた")
which will display 正義の味方 on old Reddit. The quotation marks are not optional.
Announcements:
If a VNDB page for a newly announced VN is available, make sure to post it in the comments when you've submitted the post.
NSFW:
After submitting, mark the submission with the NSFW tag if unhidden 18+ material is contained in the post.
Unallowed Posts:
No non-VN related submissions, no reposts from within under a year, no low-effort submissions. Details.
Images:
Images, Screenshots, and Memes related to Visual Novels are currently fine to post. Just make sure to space out your posts in moderation. If you post a screenshot, you are required to post a name of the visual novel in the title as well as tagging the topic with spoilers.
Self-promotion, crowdfunding, and Kickstarters:
Make sure topic title has Visual Novel name, make sure Project has narration and emphasis on reading, make sure updates are only major milestones, space out new asset/poll updates once every 2 weeks. Details here.
Giveaways & selling stuff:
Giveaway and selling posts are fine. Just make sure to post some kind of picture proof if selling anything physical. Tips here.
Piracy:
Don't ask for or link to illegal downloads, don't mention sites where illegal downloads are hosted, and don't encourage illegal downloading. Translation patches are allowed.
Non-VN related threads
Submissions unrelated to VNs are discouraged. Use the weekly Off-topic threads or the Weekly Question threads for personal things like saying hello, thanks, goodbye, or asking to be Steam friends. News about VN adaptions is allowed.
18+ Content
We welcome discussion about VNs containing 18+ content, but please bear in mind that this subreddit itself is not marked NSFW, and the focus of this subreddit is on VNs with some sort of literary value. Discussion of VNs with no literary value and with a large focus on 18+ content would be better suited to r/eroge.

I have seen the anime before although not really paying attention (too horny). Now that I actually sit down and read, it is like, damn.
This guy is nice. I like him.
Also, great game btw. The rag to riches always has its allure, coupling with great protag and.. ahem.. P L O T.
Common routes are one of the structural elements of many visual novels that get discussed a lot- mostly with critiques of being overly long.
I recently played Tokyo Necro and concluded the (not short) common route was inadequate. The routes contained far too much repetitive content. In particular, with no fixed route order exposition for any world elements not explained in the common route- many elements- had to be reexplained in each route, often with little novelty.
Given the VN already had quite serious issues with pacing and verbosity (probably not helped by my hopes for a Kikokugai successor) it did not help (though not the only issue), and a longer common route with divergence and routes compressed would have helped.
Does anyone else have examples of having played a VN and thought the common route was too short, or didn't do enough work to set up the routes? What VNs would have benefited from a longer common route? I would suspect this is more likely in plot rather than romance focused works, but all takes of interest.
Edit: Just to note I know common routes being too long is much more of a problem. Thats exactly why I was wondering if there were any other cases where someone might call one too short.
How eager are you to participate in giving a try to new VNs and helping out with feedback? The reason behind this post is partially to discuss what drives you (if anything) to leave feedback for anything you read/play. Do you feel more compelled to leave feedback when something is wrong, or vice versa - good?
The second reason I'm asking is probably quite obvious - I'm trying to get all the feedback I can for the story I'm working on. As of now, I've got 31 responses from people who played and shared their thoughts, and I wonder if I can find more people on the sub (with free time and desire to read something new, and even better if ready to leave feedback afterwards).
I'm on the part in the screenshot right now. I feel like they've just been dropping hints without giving proper explanations for anything and it's pissing me off honestly.
Hello everyone, I'm a casual reader where hate heavy violence/gore being shown on screen especially VN. Is there a way to see if that series have Heavy Violence or Gore before i played it and without spoiling anything?
Weirdly i play Mortal Kombat and Doom fine, but when anime like character dying always make me uncomfortable. I finished Danganronpa Series and I'm fine with the killing, maybe because pink colour blood ?
Hey, I’ve been wanting to get into these vns, but I’ve heard the remastered translations aren’t so good, but I haven’t seen anything really telling me why. For anyone who knows, should I go for the remaster or the older fan translation ?
I've just finished the common route, which took me 5 days.
And so I'm just about to start Ichijos route, and then I'm also planning on doing Kanaes route, Chachamarus route, and the true route, so roughly how long is each in comparison?
Or more specifically characters who are into fighting games. I’m reading Majikoi S now and I really like whenever they pop up. I know it’s not too uncommon, but I’ll take any recommendations
So a while ago a r/visualnovels user posted a Tokyo Necro re-mosaic patch and said to plan on doing more. Has there been some other releases I am not aware of? I thought I heard something about Aoi Tori (>!tbh. NN ruined Koku's stunning art with ugly redrawn cocks by westerners!<)? Or am I imagining things? Anyway, has there been more patches? I simply want the authentic Japanese experience, not westerner fanart slapped on original CGs.
I didnt play Ouka Sabaki ( I'm planning to), but the premise of this one caught my interest . Sadly I didnt see any reviews about it.
What is the the closest to definitive way to play it at the moment? The PSVita patch?
Way too often you have to forgive a character who wronged you or else things will go bad/you can’t get the good end. I want a game where I can be mad at a character and stay mad 😂
Any type of VN works, big or small… no graphic sex scenes though please
Guys, does anyone have the entire Selene Apoptosis achievement and ending guide? I've done 13 achievements so far and only got endings 4 and 6
Welcome to the weekly "What are you reading?" thread!
This is intended to be a general chat thread on visual novels with a focus on the visual novels you've been reading recently. A new thread is posted every Thursday at 4:00 AM JST (or Wednesday if you don't live in Japan for some reason).
Good WAYR entries include your analysis, predictions, thoughts, and feelings about what you're reading. The goal should be to stimulate discussion with others who have read that VN in the past, or to provide useful information to those reading in the future! Avoid long-winded summaries of the plot, and also avoid simply mentioning which VNs you are reading with no points for discussion. The best entries are both brief and brilliant.
Use spoiler tags liberally!
Always use spoiler tags in threads that are not about one specific visual novel. Like this one!
Remember to link to the VNDB page of the visual novel you're discussing so the indexing bot for the What Are You Reading Archive can pick up your post.
Hiya guys so I finished WA2 almost 2 months ago. I finished all of the content /side content and i still got that emptiness from finishing a good story. This time though I feel alot more hollow because i really loved WA2 ao much. It became my definitive favourite piece of literature of all time easily. Anyone have any suggestions on how to manage this feeling? I tried writing reviews for the game, writing out all of my thoughts in a journal, talking to some other WA2 fans in discord, hanging out with friends even finishing some other vns but that emptiness stays. I apologize for such a strange question.
I love Meteor World Actor. Really really love this VN. Read it at least 3 times over the 4 years its been out. And read Badge & Dagger twice at this point. Great character writing and designs, great setting, great music. Ruka Hiryu might be my favorite Visual Character ever. I could make an whole post about him alone. He definitely competes with Nemu Manaka from Euphoria for my favorite. Ruka is the perfect protagonist for this Noire like novel.
HOWEVER... My relationship with these games are really complicated. As the number one issue with these games, that are well noted by the way, is the narrative. MWA is incomplete. It's like the plot never had a chance to finish cooking in the oven for any of the routes and poor Chiffon getting the short end of the stick. I couldn't believe her route was that bad. It pisses me off reading these character routes and then they do the one thing i don't particularly like in narratives where all the routes happen or a variation of them did. It's kinda even more stupid in this game as none of the info carried in each of those routes actually matters in the final one. And that final route is so disappointing, I could cry about it. Musashi, Linda, the Cult so many cool things introduced here, the memory thing with Claris is stupid though, that followed through and was saved for the apparent sequel. I don't mind a sequel hook. But fucking complete your story. And speaking of sequels....
Badge & Dagger. I hate this Visual Novel with a passion. 12 Hours where nothing happens, besides Ruka's house blowing up. The Fuyumi route was okay, but that is filler to the highest order. This may be my most hated visual novel ever. There is stuff I like here. Ruka's nightmares about Musashi, his "cooperation" with Linda even though she never shows up again after the first few hours and Ruka going full vigilante taking out Cult members while playing stupid to the higher ups. B&D introduces four new characters and does nothing with any of them. Even Commissioner Daimonji after her pretty awesome introduction, which is so disappointing man. Daimonji puts Ruka on a leash, walks him around and takes him off the leash. That's it. What a waste and a really bad to be continued for scene with two characters who have done nothing, Alex and Nagare are accusing each other of being the traitor. I laughed so hard on how dumb that scene is.
Now despite everything negatively I have said about both of these Visual Novels, I really love them. And I hate how much I love them, especially the first one. with of all its issues, Metoer World Actor is in my top 5 of favorite VNs. There is so much to for me not to here, but I keep getting sucked backed in. I LOVE CHAOS:CHILD and I'm never going to read it again in all likelihood. But, I have so many issues with MWA's narrative but I'm probably going to read both of them again next year (2025) and I hate to admit, I'm so excited for the 3rd MWA VN. Even though I know it's gonna end disappointedly.
I need help. I didn't mean for this post to be this long. Shows how much I care about it. Anyone feel the same way I do? Got addicted to the MWA cocaine. I would like to hear what other people think of these Visual Novels.
Hi all, my guild is doing an Extra Life benefit stream this coming weekend, and I've been roped into streaming for a three-hour block. I would like to stream a game in one of my favorite genres - either a VN or a JRPG. Unfortunately, most of the VNs I've played and loved tend to be longer games with a more involved story... as much as I love Utawarerumono, I don't think the first three hours of Mask of Deception would be a particularly entertaining stream.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a suitable VN I could stream? The game doesn't have to finish within three hours, but it should get interesting/compelling fairly quickly. Also, no R18 content - our guild tries to keep things roughly Teen/CERO C rated. Thanks!
