From Kings County so, I’m familiar with Visalia. I’m currently a student at COS at age 30. Im a late starter in life but I feel good about this. Looking for cool neighborhoods, also not too costly. Under $1,300 is my budget which give my research is doable. Any suggestions of any are welcomed.

HOW TO DRIVE IN VISALIA:

1. You must first learn to pronounce the city name, it is: VI-SAYL-YA, not ViZ-ZELYA'.

There are other difficult names to learn like Kaweah and San Joaquin, but those will be included in the advanced course.

2. The minimum acceptable speed on most freeways is 75 mph. On 99, your speed should at least match the freeway number. Anything less is considered 'Wussy’.

NOTE - Do not try to match the freeway number on 198.

3. The prime directive in dense fog is: If you can’t can’t see it, it doesn't exist.

3a. At least 20% of you believe that dense fog doesn't have any effect on the safe speed to drive. The same 20% also do not turn on your lights in the fog as you believe you can see just fine without them. This 20% keeps the tow companies and body shops in business during the winter months.

3b. In extremely dense fog, match the speed of any vehicle that passes you and maintain visual contact with its tail lights. If you are passed by an even faster vehicle, do it again. Repeat as many times as you are passed by faster vehicles until you crash.

4. Forget any intersection etiquette you learned elsewhere. Visalia has its own version of rules. For example, cars, trucks, or SUVs with the loudest muffler always go first at a four-way stop. Trucks and SUVs with the biggest tires go second, however, north-side, SUV-driving, cell phone-talking, baby-mamas with attitude ALWAYS have the right of way.

5. If you actually stop at a yellow light, you will be rear ended, cussed out, and likely assaulted.

6. If you make three green lights in a row, pull over at the first mini-mart you come to and immediately buy a lottery ticket.

7. Never honk at anyone. Ever.

Seriously, it will get your ass kicked.

8. Road construction is permanent and continuous in Visalia. Detour signs, cones, and barrels are randomly moved around in the middle of the night to make the next day's driving a bit more exciting and entertaining.

9. Watch carefully for road hazards such as drunks, skunks, dogs, barrels, cones, cows, horses, cats, mattresses, couches, chairs, 2 by 4s, tires, trees, squirrels, rabbits, crows, vultures, and the coyotes and mountain lions feeding on any of the critters.

10. If someone actually has their turn signal on, wave them to the side of the road immediately and let them know it has been 'accidentally activated'. If they are driving a BMW, call mental health and report them as a 5150.

11. If you are in the left lane and only driving 70 in a 55-65 mph zone, you are considered a road hazard and will be 'flipped off'. If you return the flip, you'll be run off the road or shot.

12. For summer driving, it is advisable to wear oven mitts on your hands.

13. Signs advising that turning right on a red light is prohibited are not real traffic signs. They are created using cardboard and crayons by uneducated and unloved gnomes who sneak into town at night from the foothills and put them up. They should be totally ignored.

14. It's a sport in Visalia to make it through a yellow light from at over 500 feet away.

15. The most efficient location to draft another vehicle to improve your fuel economy is smack-dab in the middle of its 'blind spot'.

16. Raised 4x4s should have at least six high-intensity spot lights attached to the roll bar and a minimum of four fog lights on the front fender. The aiming of these lights should be varied so they blast through the rear windows of all slower and stopped vehicles regardless of window height. All these lights should only be used at their brightest setting. If the hair of the people in the back seat of the vehicle ahead of you is not smoking from the overwhelming energy output of your lights, you should add additional lights.

17. On a family day trip to Sequoia Park, all 19 suitcases should be strapped to your roof and trunk so they entirely block the view behind you. This will allow you to ignore the angry line of cars you're leading as you drive up the hill at 14 mph with your overheating and slipping transmission all the way to Grant's Grove.

18. If a high-performance sports car out accelerates your pickup, SUV, or 4-cylinder car from a traffic light or freeway on-ramp without actually trying, you should immediately do a fly-by to shame the sports car driver and show them that your vehicle is capable of going a full 10 miles per hour over the speed limit without the wheels falling off.

I 21M, and my best friend, Jamie, 21F, met about two years ago when we both worked at a local bakery. From the start, we hit it off. Jamie would rant to me about her exes or friends, and I’d share my frustrations about home life, especially after moving back in with my parents following a few years of college. Jamie had her own set of problems with her stepdad, and she often stayed over at my place—sometimes for a few days, sometimes for a week. Eventually, my parents sold our house, and I had to move in with my sister. To put it mildly, my sister lives in Section 8 housing, and the place was filthy—bugs everywhere. It wasn’t ideal. After a month or two of living in those conditions, Jamie, her mom, and I decided to rent a house together temporarily. We were both excited about sharing a space, and to share our 21st birthdays together. At first, everything seemed great. Then things started to go downhill. Jamie met someone at work and they quickly became inseparable. They were constantly together, acting lovey-dovey, which I thought was sweet at first. However, Jamie would often say, "I can only be obsessed with one person at a time," which I didn’t mind, as I understood her struggles with BPD. She would regularly have a new “favorite person,” but I didn’t take it personally—after all, I wasn’t her significant other, and we both had our own lives. Unfortunately, Jamie started to distance herself from me more and more, to the point where we barely spoke. She also had this bad habit of leaving her things all over the place—clothes on the bathroom floor, moldy cups and bowls in our room, you name it. Anytime I would try to clean up or move her stuff, she’d flip out. She’d scream at me, saying I shouldn’t touch her things and that if I didn’t like the mess, I should just move it myself. This escalated to the point where she moved all of her belongings into her sister’s room. The problem is, her 12year old sister is only around a couple of days a week, so she had to sleep on the couch whenever Jamie and her girlfriend stayed over—every night. It didn’t end there. Jamie left moldy food and trash in her sister’s room, and even worse, she left a strap-on under the bed. Her mom saw all of this happening but chose to turn a blind eye. In the five or six months we lived together, I managed to buy myself a car, took a state insurance course, and became a licensed insurance agent—all while working full-time. Luckily, I even found a 1-bedroom apartment and will be moving in a week. Jamie, on the other hand, barely got her driver’s license, and despite my encouragement, she still hasn’t gotten her GED. Despite my efforts to stay out of drama, Jamie often accused me of stealing from her—items, coins, whatever she could think of. Honestly, I was too busy with my own life to care about taking $10 from her. At this point, I became the outcast. It was Jamie and her family against me. I was called pathetic, grimey, and off-putting. I spent my 21st birthday alone because Jamie decided to skip out on celebrating mine, even though I had gone all out for hers. If it weren’t for my amazing coworkers, I would have spent that day completely alone. Now, with just 10 more days until I move into my own place, I can finally escape the nightmare of living with these roommates from hell.
