How can I install windows 98 on the same partition as Ontrack Disk manager without deleting the partition so I can use a large disk on a bios with support for only small capacities.

This 125MB WD Caviar IDE Drive from March 1992 Still Works, even when connected to a modern PC (via PCI to SATA/IDE adapter). The data was accessible on 98/XP, but not on Windows 11.

Let's Retrobright it!

Well, I took your opinions and mixed some hydrogen peroxide Special sauce to Retrobright it.

I want to give the case another life since they're getting more rare every day.

For the broken plastic at the bottom, I thought of a 3D Printer plastic cover.

PS: Sorry, forgot to post the picture -_-

So I got a nice green Dell Inspiron 3800 laptop circa 2000, but it's giving off this screen before I can even use it! What should I do? (crossposted in r/Techsupport, more in comments)

https://i.imgur.com/20ZGW7s.jpeg - First, the laptop itself.

https://i.imgur.com/tDmD17f.jpeg - Now, on to the sad part: When I turn it on, I'm greeted by this screen! Obviously, I got this laptop secondhand, and now I am trying to find out I should do to reset the darn thing, since I have not the foggiest idea what the password is. Any ideas? Thanks.

power supply question

hello I just have a very quick question its stupid but Im struggling to get answers anyway

I have a old win 95 era laptop that I've been playing around with and eventually got working and turned into a dos computer this is my first step into the world of retro computing so naturally i plugged it in with the power supply it came with its fine at the moment but I'm realizing I probably shouldn't be trusting this 20year old power supply

the power supply says it outputs 19v at 2.3a I'm having trouble finding a replacement that is exactly 2.3 would going under to 2.2 or up to 3 be ok

i know its a dumb question but power requirements are not my strong suit

Any one else remember the rebate it to hell selling method big box PC suppliers did with makers and ISPs to basically gap finance your computer for 29.99 a month for 3 years "saving" you money on your PC purchase?

https://preview.redd.it/3mm2xjltobyd1.jpg?width=593&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c971cc9da7e00a0dd1954881b59e57fac7fce593

Man I always jokingly tell people, we had this thing in the 90s and 00's and no one believed me that ISPs (I guess now would be comcast, time warner, verizon ect, since Compusere, AOL ect are very much gone. Would rebate the piss out of a PC to get a guaranteed customer for 3 years and would throw rebates at PCs to get them down half the price or nearly free but you just had to sign up for the ISP service and buy the PC in the add. I know so many people ended up having PCs this way. I even have a Compaq Presario 5400 that has a people PC sticker on it.

I finally found an add showing it and thought you all would enjoy.

Always thought it was funny like $450 mail in rebate! Sure. Your also paying 29.99 for internet for 3 years which is $1079 so you didn't really save anything, though back then you didn't have cable internet as common (in this era we did though, I remember my parents paid for comcast cable and still paid for AOL but we didn't have to "dial up" to go online. So your basically financing a PC with an insane interest rate, or at best getting a sign up bonus discount like you do with a cell phone now but are locked in a contract. Weird times we had in the PC buying world.

How to write software for Windows CE 6.0

Hello guys, recently i found an old GPS in my wardrobe, its modecom freeway mx2. After closer inspection i found out it's based on windowsCE and i was wondering if i could write my own software for this device. I manged to close the initial gps software and got access to windows directly on this device. Do you have any tips for writing applications for this system? Where do I even start?

Can someone give me pointers on 3D cards for PCs for 96-99 era Win9x gaming?

I have a PC, pentium 233mmx, 80MB ram, windows 98, and no 3d card. Often, the specs are more than adequate for what I want to play from the 90s, but if its a texture mapped windows 3D game from ~1996-1999 such as Ultimate Race Pro, Hardwar, Wipeout XL, then it looks absolutely terrible and perhaps even runs quite slowly, like sub 20fps, when using the software rendered mode, despite my cpu being well above the minimum specs on the box.

I'd like to get a 3D card to hopefully make these games look and run much much better but I'm new to 3d cards (didn't have the money to buy one in the 90s so I never studied what was considered good for such cards) and I could use some pointers so that I avoid picking a card that was either underdeveloped for the era, or that is only going to be supported by a few games.

It seems like there were several competing companies at this time, Nvidia, 3DFX, PowerVR and probably others, and they all used proprietary technology and drivers. Was one of them more of a market leader than others such that most games supported it? Did some manufacturers make cards that were compatible with their competitors APIs? Do these cards need an external power source or do they get enough juice from the PCI slot?

I saw the Nvidia Geforce 4200 recommended in some other topics. I see its from 2002. Would this be a good option for older 1996-1999 era games that support 3D acceleration?

C1084 (Commodore 1084) old style vs C1084 new style? and questions about connections to it.

I've recently picked up a C1084, specifically, the old style, that has the older style ports and switches, with the db9 for rgbi, instead of the din connector on the newer revision. It also has a 3-position slide switch that's really hard to reach in the front on the far right of the covered knobs, instead of what's normally a button I think?

What I'm wondering is, what are the main differences I'll need to keep in mind? pros/cons over the newer rev? And most importantly, does it have the same capabilities, provided you have the right adapter?

The other thing I'm wondering is, for this monitor, what's the difference between analog and digital rgb? would cga from a pc be digital? and how would I connect, respectively, a c64, vic-20, and atari 800? below the audio and composite rca, there's an rca labeled 'chroma', what's that for? and what sorts of systems have it?

my 800 came with a din cable, for video out, and with a black and red rca, is that for composite and audio? the c1084 came with a din cable which leads to a black, white, yellow, and red, rca, is this compatible with the vic-20? otherwise, what kind of cable do I need?

On the front switch, why are there 3 positions, instead of, as far as I can tell, the button that only has 2? (they're labelled 'comp.', 'sep.', and 'rgb', what's sep? and is there supposed to be some kind of cover on this, so it's possible to change it's position, without sticking tweasers in and with a flashlight?
