To all Vinland Saga fans, I highly recommend (Hokuou Kizoku to Moukinzuma no Yukiguni Karigurashi) The Snow Country Hunting Life of the Northern Nobleman and the Raptor Wife. This manga takes place somewhere in Scandinavia. it's about a tomboyish girl and a hunter.

Any Chance Season 3 Will Be Good?

Can anyone that has read the manga verify if season three will be less trash than season 2? I kept praying every episode would be the episode where something good happens I was severely disappointed especially after how epic season 1 was...

Yukimura: “I approached the bible out of personal interest rather than religious conviction; I found its message of love and forgiveness truly remarkable”

During and Interview on January 25, 2025, with Le Figaro, in his visit to France for the Angoulême Festival (an exhibition on Vinland Saga is being held there) Yukimura was asked about forgiveness in Vinland Saga. His full answer is the following:

"I approached the Bible out of personal interest rather than religious conviction; I found its message of love and forgiveness truly remarkable. I believe that the spread of Christianity at the time may have helped ease the warrior mindset. Fortunately, I have never experienced a situation that would prevent me from forgiving someone who has wronged me, so I had to put myself in someone else's shoes, and I chose a case perhaps a little extreme: Hild. What could be more terrifying than seeing your father murdered before your eyes? And what could be more extraordinary than coming to forgive the murderer of your own father?

I decided to portray Thorfinn as someone extremely violent, bloodthirsty, who, over time, transforms and manages not only to forgive those who have harmed him but also to receive that forgiveness. I thought that if I could tell such a story and make it resonate with my readers, perhaps it would be my way of contributing to pacifying the world or, at least, to changing the mentality regarding this subject. I feel that the world today needs this notion of forgiveness more than ever, as it is often misunderstood or even scorned.”

Its truly impressive the way his work can affect the people who read it. In my case, it reminded me what I loved about the religion I was raised with: love, forgiveness and compassion

Vinland saga vs vagabond - differences, similarities, pros and cons?

I love Vinland saga and Ive been completely caught up for awhile. I've heard of vagabond many times and would like to know how it compares.

What do you see as the pros and cons or at least the factors that make up vagabond in comparison to VS in that is it more/less serious, is pacing centered around external events or is it more internal/philosophical (with that context is pacing good?), are characters more/less fleshed out or "complex" or do they feel more "real", etc etc.

What are the similarities and differences of vagabonds overall message compared to VS and whats the similarities/differences in how they're gone about?

In general how would you describe vagabond being different from Vinland saga and which do you personally prefer and why?

If you want you can compare vagabond to any VS moments that'll help me understand Vagabond a bit better.

This similarly has been asked before, however I would like a more detailed response instead of just "blank is better because blank is eternal/a journey/whatever

Mom and Grandma completed the first season !!!

Mom and grandma clapped in respect for the self-sacrifice of Askeladd for his mom's nation, for her Welsh people and for the possibility of less barbaric future for all people through reign of Prince Canute.

Mom viewed it as the moment of redemption for Askeladd where he stood up like a real warrior and challenged the people who gave him a traumatic world to be born in, instead of swinging swords on civilians.

For Grandma, the act of brave atonement was his only option left as his gang was disbanded and Floki already viewed him as a threat so after death of Canute, Askeladd would have got assassinated anyway like an old lonely bear.

Mom appreciated Canute for his wisdom. She said that he always took wise decisions as he always fulfilled the demand of time. In his low phase, he remained a harmless obedient boy to survive and in his high phase, he took the command of everything in the way his conscience guided him.

Grandma was happy with the ending, but cringed so much when she saw Thorfinn once again abandoning responsibilties of his old mother & sister, to act like maniac over Askeladd's death and to try killing Prince Canute?!?? Is his brain rotten like some six weeks old fish??!

Both mom and grandma agreed so hard with the statement of Askeladd that Thorfinn is braindead fool.

Askeladd also had even worse childhood trauma than him and didn't have the birthmark of honour like being son of great warrior Thors. He lived like a disgraceful child of a sex-slave, YET he never abandoned his responsibilites towards his mother and her people.

Grandma added that Canute has trauma of being seen a lowlife prey by his dad and brother all his life. His sole father figure Ragnar got killed. YET he kept himself composed and tried to look ahead in life.

Meanwhile "Mr. Thorfinn" (my mom called him that lol) neglected his family and village back home for his selfish obsession towards Askeladd, who could kill Thors only becoz of Thorfinn being his weakness (cuz Mr. Thorfinn never even respected his own dad's words)

I hope you all find at least a bit of the enjoyment I did at seeing this, and hopefully it helps with the pain of the recent chapter lol(good pain loved the recent chapter) . And I hope y’all have a lovely day!!!

Is it better to be a warrior in a garden ?

I believe that the pain and hatred that fueled thorffins transformation into a brutal warrior was what allowed him to find his true peace. To prove this I use the case of Eninar , who went thru a similar arc as throffin( watching his mom die) but didn't go thru that revenge arc to build himself up. So when given the chance to take a life he did so. So I come to the conclusion that thorffin was only able to achieve his peace because of his strength. And this feels like a very wrong takeaway to have form a story that is all about finding peace and choosing non violence.

Mom and Grandma got opinions about Thorkell

Grandma find Thorkell admirable for consistency in ideals and actions. He loves combat and respects people who are good at it, doesn't matter what's their identity is (which is why he doesn't harm Askeladd)

Such consistency is absent in Askeladd as he goes on massacre innocent villagers for lame reason, while he takes 180° shift in character and happily forgives Torgrim & his amnesiac brother without any thoughts of security.

Thorkell clearly hates cheating and people who cheat, doesn't matter if they are his people or not, and doesn't matter if they benefit him or not.

Mom said that Thorkell is actually a warrior unlike Askeladd as he only attacks fighters with weapons on, not villagers with little kids. Probably this determination to stick on these morals even in face of enemity with king, fuelled traditional loyalty in his troops (that was absent in Askeladd's gang whom he taught wickedness)

So yes! For now, mom & grandma find Thorkell>>>>>>Askeladd

just started Vinland

Binged all of season one and bjorn dying got my ass emotional, the only thing I don’t like about this show is how Canute just did a complete 180 and how unexpected askeladd flips at the king kills him, and dies TO CANUTE

Retrospective Discussion on Askeladd and the outcomes of his choices

So Askeladd is a huge piece of shit, despite his likability, I think we can all acknowledge that. But his main motives during the prologue seemed to be 1.find a purpose he could dedicate his life to beyond just pillaging and killing 2.create a leader who he deemed worthy of leading the world in the right direction, because he himself was too tainted 3.protect Wales (secondary goal but just as important as the first 2) Taking this in mind, I wonder what the proceeding events of the story means for Askeladd as a character when we take the results of his actions into consideration. What I mean by this is that Askeladd chose Canute to be the leader who would steer the world in the right direction, but as we know from the farm arc, Canute nearly turned out to be tyrannical at heart despite his somewhat good intentions, and his mind was only ever changed by Thorfinn himself, a person that Askeladd only ever acknowledged as having the potential of a dog chasing after food. Does this mean we can interpret Askeladd’s core motivating actions as being incorrect all along? Or is this Yukimiura’s way of condemning Askeladd’s way of thinking, given that the events that transpired after his death was the opposite of what he expected? Or maybe was it Yukimiura’s way of communicating to the audience that hoping for a leader who will change the world for the better is a fools endeavor? Especially considering what we learn about leaders and the responsibilities of individual people from the Vinland arc so far, (I’m referring to how Thorfinn mostly fails because he’s only a single person) it almost makes me wonder if thinking about the salvation of the world in terms of putting our faith in leaders is ideologically something that Yukimiura wants to condemn by observing the events that Askeladd set into motion. Thanks for reading.

Did anyone go to see Makoto Yukimira?

So i'm going to a festival in Angouleme in France and Makoto Yukimira is there for autographs and other things. The festival started today and ends on sunday (im there saturday). To get an entry for the autograph place you need to go to a stand and buy smth and the 70 first people or so who do that gets an autograph and meet up with him (its happens every day). So i was wondering if anyone had been there today so they could tell me how early i should stand there and wait for the festival to open (it opens at 10 am).

My mom & grandma got some points to say about Askeladd

Grandma said that Askeladd thought of his progenitor (she doesn't use 'father' for r@pists) as a monster and hence, considered himself as a monster too who has evil blood flowing in his veins.

The moment he ordered slaughter of innocent Mercian villager families, he confirmed that he associates nothing but inherent evil with his paternal side. This is probably why he encourages his gang members to be more & more henious criminals, so that more and more filth could be smeared on the face of Danes' caricature that he has in his mind.

My mom said that his cause was hollow and hypocritical cuz he took pride in his maternal heritage of Artorius who inspired legends of kind and honest king Arthur, while he himself turned into a beast who had neither honesty nor kindness.

He wanted justice for his mom who suffered enslavement, lose of family and r@pe....by enslaving other women, murdering their families and letting his men ravage them ?!??

If he wanted justice for Welsh then why didn't put efforts in building band of Welsh people and helped them to rebuild the empire that inspired Arthurian legends?!??

He deserved a far more brutal end than what he got

Why did Askaladd do what he did?

Askaladd is pretty cold hearted (like most characters). Why did he sacrifice himself to save both Wales and the prince? He hardly cared about anyone else in the series, but he had the option of Prince Canute or Wales. Why didn't he take Canutes life since he hates Denmark so much? I guess he didnt trust/despised the current king?

First time watcher and only just finished season 1. 9/10 anime so far I'm loving it
