What are the dyes used in colorful vegan yarns?

Is there a chance that otherwise seemingly vegan yarn, especially made from plant fibers, contain dyes that have animal origins? A friend of mine asked this question and I couldn’t answer for sure. I’m assuming here people would know. Also, what are the chemicals and dyes used in vegan fibers?

I think knitting with cotton is making my wrists hurt

I am finishing up the Maude cardigan by Carrie Bosick Hodge. I am considering not doing any positive ease "slouchy" projects with cotton again because my wrists are really feeling it and I think the weight of the project is to blame.

Does anyone else have this issue? Any tips or musings? I use circular needles only and I knit Portuguese style, but before going Portuguese I knit English for like 10~ years.

ISO Vegan (aran) weight yarn for slipover.

Hi, I want to make my fiancée a slipover/vest, probably the Lana Vest by Irene Lin but tbd. I’m looking for good vegan yarns that would work well for such a pattern. I have never worked with 100% non-animal fibres and have no idea where to start looking for good quality yarn, preferably all natural fibres Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you 😊

Vegan and plant-based alternative for a pattern that suggests DK Supermerino?

Hi all, my husband has asked me to crochet him a sweater from a pattern he found, but the original pattern recommends DK Supermerino - both he and I are vegan, and he'd prefer a plant-based yarn so I'm looking for a good substitute. I'm wondering what "type" would be best in this case?

What are your primary considerations when choosing vegan yarns?

I work in sustainability/ESG and I am interested in everyone's primary considerations when choosing yarns. Is your sole motivation the mitigation of animal cruelty (i.e. you use acrylic-only yarns), or is environmental impact also an important secondary concern (i.e. you prefer plant-based yarns and blends)?

If environmental impact is an important or required secondary concern for you when choosing yarns, how much research do you perform when choosing a yarn blend? Sustainability-related questions I am considering:

  • Do you prefer small-scale spinners or indie yarn dyers?
  • To what extent do you value ethical labor practices in vegan yarn?
  • Do ethical certifications influence your desire to buy a yarn (sustainability)
  • Do you value certain fibers over others based on environmental impact? What measures of environmental impact concern you? (e.g. land use change, pollutants, emissions, water use, etc.)
  • If environmental issues are important to you, are you more likely to skip all the above considerations and just unravel old thrifted sweaters for reclaimed yarn?

This isn't for research or anything, I'm just interested hearing what you have to say on the topic!

Best vegan worsted wool alternative

Ugh - I am hoping to knit a yoked sweater aran/worsted weight - but struggling to find a yarn worth the effort. What are people using and most happy with? I don’t want a cotton only - looking for something with at least a tiny bit or stretch… Not against using an acrylic or acrylic blend but really looking for best quality if there is such a thing…!

a worsted yarn sweater with or without elastic?

I’m making a vegan version of the famous Handsome Chris wool sweater for my fiancé. After a lot of research, it’s come down to the two worsted yarns by Vegan Yarn. Does anyone have experience making a wearable with VY’s Alnilam or Hyades? And if not, will elastic that blooms be a problem in a men’s sweater or no?

We live in the UK so the goal is warmth and durability that’s not acrylic. This is the fiber breakdown:

A- 51% organic cotton, 49% bamboo

H- 40% organic cotton, 40% tencel, 20% nylon elastic

Yarn for winter garments - only acrylic?

Hi everyone!

I’ve recently started knitting again and I’ve become obsessed. I would really like to start knitting my own garments and I know that plant based fibers will be great for spring/summer time, but is there any other option for winter sweaters aside from acrylic?

Most of the sweaters I own now are either made from synthetic materials or thrifted with no tag on them. I want to make sweaters that look like the wool ones I see all the knitters make, but I also want to keep warm as it gets pretty cold where I live. People say cotton is bad for sweaters, but making an entire sweater out of something like bamboo seems impractical and also really expensive.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

vegan mohair alternatives? (US)

hello fellow yarn addicts !

i knit and crochet so naturally i am always looking for cute vegan yarns. i absolutely love the way that mohair looks in so many wearable projects but 1) i cannot stand for animal exploitation and 2) i'm coincidentally allergic to wool.

i have been scouring the internet for a synthetic or plant-based yarn that has that same halo effect and is lightweight. but i haven't really had much luck :-(

lion brand used to have a line of synthetic yarns called "faux mo" that seems to be perfect for what i want to use it for! unfortunately, it's since been discontinued for years now.

they have another line called "feels like bliss" that has a similar fuzzy effect, but i feel so limited by the color options. i might opt for this one if i can't find any other yarns tbh, it's just somewhat pricey.

on the topic of pricey yarns, katia has their concept line "pluma" with a fuzzy similarity to mohair, but priced at $11 a skein plus shipping? aahhhhh

another katia concept line called "snowy," with a light n soft fuzz. super pricey again.

aside from lion brand, i know the european brand phildar has a line of yarns called "phil romance" with a soft fluff that looks similar to the halo effect i'm looking for. https://www.happywool.com/p/phil-romance-p-049183.html?skuId=218589

french brand pingouin has a line called "pingo calin" made of synthetic fibers, but its fluff is more of a shaggy textured fluff from the photos i've seen online. https://www.happywool.com/p/pingo-calin-p-41555.html#skuId:181967

these are the only yarns i've come across online when looking for a vegan mohair alternative, with all but one being immediately accessible as an option for me! i would like to know if there are any vegan, mohair-like yarns available in the US that you all can recommend! i'm desperate :[

Vegan sock yarn in europe

Hi everyone,

thanks for this sub! I’m looking for some indie dye yarn in Europe, like Pléiade by vegan yarn or Terrapin yarn. The shipping fees are really expensive and it’s a long way by plane for a few skeins of yarn ! Does anyone have ideas for negative ease friendly yarn? I know about regia cotton but I think I’m looking for something with No pattern, because I just want to knit summer top (i love regia cotton for socks knitting tho !)

thanks a lot everyone !

Drops Yarn

Hello! Im new to this subreddit but an avid knitter/crocheter and I wanted to inquire about drops wool in here.

They state on their website that they source their wool from South America where it is guaranteed that the sheep are not subjected to mulesing (their words not mine). I couldn't find any more information on it, but i'd like to know if their wool is cruelty free and ethical not only through a lack of mulesing but also through ethical sheering practices and cruelty free methods all-together.

I love using drops as its the best price - quality yarn that is available to me, but the well being of these animals matters so much more. If any of you know more about it, I'd love to hear any information.

UK based options from indie and small companies?

I've seen the lovely hand dyed vegan yarns from Nurturing Fibres in South Africa and LeRoo Crochet in the US. But I'm looking for some options from dyers and small businesses here in the UK.

I know about veganyarn.co.uk but wondering if there's any others? Not looking for vegan brands, but just yarn options.

Would you be ok with used wool yarn?

I found a beautiful sweater at a thrift store recently. It was made with gorgeous 100% wool yarn. I didn't buy it because, wool, but I thought for a moment about frogging the sweater to reclaim the yarn and make something new with it. Basically used yarn.

This sparked an internal debate in my mind and I cannot stop thinking about it. I keep going back and forth on it. So I'm looking for opinions out of curiosity and to try to get it out of my head: Would you use wool yarn if it came from a used sweater? Or nah? Why or why not?

Vegan sock yarn

Someone in a yarn sub asked about vegan sock yarn recommendations. I thought I'd kick off a thread and add a recommendation. Does anyone else have any other recommendations to contribute?

https://www.veganyarn.co.uk/product-category/yarn-base-material/vegan-sock-yarn/

Vegan yarn do a vegan sock yarn that is made from tencel, organic cotton and elastic. They have some really nice colours. All of their yarns in general are highly recommended too.

Oh, and if you are Canada or US based, I believe you can visit the US version of their website and shop the yarns from there- less airtravel and cheaper shipping :-)

Help me pick a nice yarn for my vegan SIL

Greetings, vegans! I'm not vegan, but my SIL is. I'm a pretty experienced knitter, and mostly knit with wool blends (don't hate me). My SIL is vegan, and I want to make her Summer Secret Crop. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/summer-secret-crop

I made myself one and love it, but it's superwash wool. The final product won't be blocked since it should be stretchy, but I'm struggling to find a hand-dyed or fun variegated yarn that would be suitable for her to wear as a vegan. I don't want to get cheap, solid-color acrylic from a craft store.

This is my crop, with a pic of the skein too. I'd like to find something similarly interesting if I can, but not necessarily the same colors. I've consulted with my knitting group and LYS and they don't know either. Cotton and bamboo likely wouldn't work because of the stretchiness of the tank.

Thrumming to solve warmth issue with plant based fibers?

I just learned about the technique of thrumming when you knit. It looks like this (not mine):

https://i.redd.it/bufvmz2m4dd41.jpg

Here is a video where it is explained. In short, you use roving to knit some of your stitches. But the ends of the roving stays in the inside of a mitten for example without beeing weaved in to provide a thick insulation layer which traps the air.

So of course traditionally people use wool for that technique. But I wondered if cotton roving would also be enough to provide that insulation layer and if some of you maybe have experience with that?

Experience with blankets made of cotton?

Hi there, I mainly crochet with 8/4 cotton and have a lot of scrap yarn. So I thought about making a scrap blanket. But my mom and my knitting and/or crocheting coworkers all think it's a horrible idea because they say it'll be super heavy. Does someone of you already did a blanket made with cotton? I think having a heavier blanket isn't necessary bad, given that some people pay quite a lot of money for a weight blanket (or however it's called in English) :D
