I’m re reading the relaunch from 2012 on; since they switched owners, does anyone recommend I only read up to a certain year?
I've seen literally 0 discussion about this series and very little documentation in general online. Seems like a later DMG book that released to absolutely zero fanfare. On the Valiant wiki, I see that there's a page for a trade paperback collection, but absolutely no other mention of it anywhere!
Is it any good? (I doubt it) Will it ever get a collected release? What the hell were they thinking when they put this out?
Why is the Archer and Mary-Maria ship back!? It was disgusting and weird back in 2012 but thankfully the next Archer & Armstrong seemed to have resolved it with them agreeing it was weird, and having Archer be with Faith. Why would they break up Archer and Faith, a couple who in my opinion work really well together, and go back to this? It's very baffling, especially considering everything I've seen from Alien Books seemed to suggest they were focusing on listening to a lot of the criticisms about previous comics and fixing those issues (like Bloodshot being separated from his family).
I am a Valiant super fan from all the way back to pre-Unity days, like many of you. I loved and cherished the 2012 re-boot of the Valiant universe and, in general, am digging "The Resurgence".
So for that reason, I makes me sad to say that the art quality and consistency of some of these books is really bringing me down. Even artists that I am normally a fan of don't seem to be bringing their A-game.
Resurgence #1 and 2 look great and overall I am fine with the art in Shadowman. But what is going on with the art in Black, White, and Bloodshot #2?
It is possible that I am a bit biased as I am an artist myself, but I find a lot of what I am looking at here to be amateurish at best and not at all acceptable for a company as well known as Valiant, regardless of struggles around the pandemic.
It really looks, to me, like the artists must have been given just a couple of days to complete their stories. Everything looks scratchy and unfinished. The inking, if you can call it that, looks like there was no effort in doing basic things like line-weights, cross-hatching in a professional manner, and being clean with their lines.
Normally, I am a fan of how Kevin Van Hook draws Bloodshot. I cherish my old issues! But I don't see how any professional artist with a history such as his presents a story with just a couple of pages that is so inconsistent. The anatomy is really bad, the poses are all out of whack, and it feels like Van Hook forgot how to draw hands completely.
I feel so bad making this post, because I love a lot of the modern Valiant/Alien Books era, so this isn't coming from a place of just wanting to complain online and cause drama. This is a genuinely a plea to the creators, because I know at least the writer is here, to please do something about this.
It is bothersome to me when Valiant promotes these books and calls this art "stunning" in advertisements. Stunning, maybe, but not for the reasons you might think. It's heart-breaking to see one of my favorite characters of all time reduced to artwork that looks like it was drawn by teenagers who are still learning the ropes.
I am not trying to be insulting. I apologize if people take it that way. I just can't help but think of the millions of artists out there that would KILL to work on a Valiant book, with classic Valiant characters and get their foot into the industry to boot.
The covers are great, though. Issue 1 was also generally fine. I feel that you need to be giving your artists more time to polish and you probably need to up your budget as well. If you cant up the budget, then maybe we aren't quite ready for a "Resurgence" at all.
I fell off of Valiant for a while following the DMG buyout, but I've been hearing a lot of hype and praise for the recent books and I'm really excited to get into Valiant again! I've bought the recent hardcovers (X-O Manowar Unconquered, Book of Shadows, Ninjak Superkillers) to support Alien the best I can, but I want the new fully original Alien titles in trade paperback as that is the only way I read comics.
Has there been any word on when these new books from Alien will be compiled into collected editions? Everything looks absolutely incredible and I want to be on this new era of Valiant.
Hola!
25 bucks for 18 issues. Good deal ALIEN books!
Now that the January 2025 solicitations are out putting an end to the Resurgence event as well as the Shadowman: Soul Eaters mini-series, what's next for Valiant?
There hasn't been any news on what they're doing for February 2025 onwards.
Anyone has any insider news or informed speculation on what's next?
I love the Asmus run. Or at least, the first 8 issues of it. Can’t find my volume 3, maddeningly. So I decided to finally read the Priest run and honestly: It’s one of his best works. I do think the dynamic might be better that Quantum and Woody are old friends, not former foster brothers. The boys’ father working together is funner then then just one father, Eric tragically thinking Woody abandoned him because Woody was racist is really sad in a good way, the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell stuff is dated as fuck (though really fun, the arc of the white supremesist militia that idolises Quantum is a brilliant idea), Woody himself definitely feels much more fleshed out in the Priest stuff. I also feel like the Priest run just had a funner supporting cast. The perpetually unlucky Detective Joe Tomorrow, Taylor 88, Tempest, Holly, Dave Warrant, Amy Feishburn, I could go on.
I suppose my point is I love the Priest/Bright run, you should read it and I feel like some of the changes in the 2014 reboot were for the worst.
Has anyone noticed a spine image Misprint on Rai? It throws off the connective spine art.
Not Valiant but I feel is related. I picked up a few signature books on Monday. I've never seen this one before. Retailer exclusive of a free comic book day DH release signed by Shooter. This one may go on the wall.
