For those of you who've used Outdoor Access to lease land for a day or weekend, how's did you get around not being able to not really recon the land?
Any lessons learned? Would you stay away from small acreage?
Getting ready to take a hunt / fish / camping trip this weekend with a buddy. We went to Gathright WMA last year which was great but..
There’s a deep, sketchy mud hole on the main trail that can be difficult to get through even if you’re driving a lifted off-road vehicle.
Anyone know if DWR has addressed it since last year? Filled it with gravel or something?
We will have a medical course on Nov. 16th! This course is for everyone to learn a valuable skill set. Teenaged kids are welcome as well. We ran this course for a group of 8 last year that came from this subreddit. If you’re interested, DM us on social media or email us. I’ll leave the link in the comments.
This course will cover injuries that need to be addressed to prevent death before EMS arrives. You could see them in a vehicle accident, the workplace, at home, maybe somebody falls out of a tree stand, etc. You will gain the knowledge AND the tools to care for traumatic injuries. The course includes a trauma first aid kit (IFAK), which is comprised of a tourniquet, chest seals, gauze, etc.
The course will be taught by veteran Navy SEAL Combat Medic Jim LaPaglia. After leaving the Navy, Jim deployed multiple times as a contractor with the CIA. He also spent the last 20 years as a lead firearms and medical instructor for Armed Forces Experimental Training Activity Department of Defense (AFETA) and law enforcement when not deployed.
The course address will be provided to those interested. If you can’t attend this course, follow us on social media for future course offerings. We also have firearms training courses.

Do see some basic info on Spotsylvania website that describes some regulations such as not 100 yards from occupied building, etc. but just looking to see if anyone knows if hunting would be allowed if you owned a property say on maybe 3-5 acres?
How about in Fredericksburg?
Hey, my in laws own some property on the water in Urbana, I was wondering if anyone had any experience duck hunting out there. I’ve been looking into the laws and regs but I’ve only duck hunted small ponds and swamps in central va. Depending on the feedback I’m thinking of getting a jon boat to hunt around the Urbana/Chesapeake Bay Area. Also if anyone knows much about ducks on the James or appomatox I would like to know any info as I could hunt that with the boat aswell.
I’ve seen some wma land out across the bay south of chincoteague but that’s a little too far for a jon boat to go. All the closest available by boat public land are wildlife preserves or national wildlife areas which aren’t huntable.
Most of December is both deer and turkey season. Never hunted turkey before but would imagine my .308 is a bit much! Does anyone go out with both a rifle and shotgun? I would predominately be in a ground blind anyway.
I am going hunting for quail, pheasant and chukar. What license to I need? I currently hold the Virginia Sportsman Hunting/ Fishing license. I cannot find a clear answer online. Thanks.
A while back I picked up an inexpensive thermal monocular just for kicks and grins....but recently I wondered if I could bring it out deer hunting to aid in spotting or tracking (pre and post shot).
I was coming up short on finding the legality of it for early/late hours and during the day. I understand that at night, an hour before sun up, and an hour after sundown are no-go.
Reddit collective, do you have any insight?
I know I spend a fair amount of $ on hunting. The total of all spending statewide and nationally is huge. Nice to know we hunters are contributing to jobs and the economy.

Like the caption says new to hunting. I would love if someone could point me in the right direction as far as getting into a group that hunts waterfowl. I would like to get into deer at some point as well. Thanks in advance.

Anyone had much luck hunting Cumberland or buckingham wma? Im staying in the area and trying to hunt a few days on one of or try out both
How do I get a deer hunting license in Virginia as a resident. I know I have to do an online safety course and buy the license. I don’t know what class to take or what license to buy. This will be for rifle hunting on private land.
Tagged out a beautiful buck this morning
Can you hunt the Wilderness Areas within the GW National Forest? For example, the Priest or Three Ridges.
Not sure how you could haul a deer out of that terrain without breaking your back but curious if it is allowed.

Hey folks - Based near Oakley WMA which I’ve been exploring as my private land connection has been ill. I’m curious for the bowhunters in the group if you guys continue to hunt public throughput the muzzle and rifle seasons?
Well, any recommendations for good deer spots? Im outta Hampton Roads. Preferably less than a 4hr drive, only requirement is that it be a spot that doesnt allow dogs, since id like to actually get a chance to hunt. Been to big woods, which seems nice but I didnt see signs of anything... Rifle, have a bow but not as confident with it, at least not enough to try to take game with it. Have a shotgun as well, but no reason to take it over my .308
Can pay. Only looking to use bow.
Send me a PM!
I’m new to the area and am looking to score some meat for the freezer.
Anyone ever participated in this quota hunt? Thoughts? Advice? I just drew it for mid january.
I appreciate the challenge of hunting public land and the different style of hunting (having to carry everything in, potentially far, and then back out at the end of the day, etc.) compared to private lands and urban archery that I’ve done, but I’m curious how everyone feels about what to do when you see other vehicles at the trailhead where you wanted to park?
Hypothetically, if there’s multiple parking areas or trailheads within a few miles of each other on public land, and you’ve scouted multiple places and feel your best spot is several hundred yards into trail A, and you get off-trail from there. But when you arrive early in the morning you see another car, or two, at the trailhead for trail A, and the trail only goes that one direction, do you park and hike in as-normal and risk running into the other hunter(s) or busting up their spot? Or do you leave and go to one of the other areas you have scouted and try there instead?
Does your answer change if it’s not archery season? Or if that area lets hunters run dogs?
Anyone ever hunted here?
I see the hours are listed as 7:30am - 8pm. How do you get in there early to set up if those are the hours?
Are you able to park in any of the lots and start hiking through the woods as you please to set up?
I've only ever hunted on private land so I'm curious about WMA hunting.
Im a non resident hunting who’s going to be hunting private land in Southern Virginia. I am going up in a week or so to scout and put out cameras. I e been told that there is a few black bears that I’m allowed to kill but after I started doing research online about hunting black bears and seen that you are not allowed to bait. So my question is if I’m able to locate the bears area what would be the best way to start hunting it. I’m also hunting deer on the same property
Is C.F. Phelps WMA a good area to hunt deer?
Do I need any special permits to hunt there other than archery and deer license and tags?
Do you have to wear orange on public land even if it’s bow season?
In regard to tagging a deer with the Enotch option on the app…is there no physical tag needed?
If there is anything else you think I should know please drop a comment!
I’ve only ever hunted private but I’m not close to home right now and don’t wanna mess this up and be in trouble with a game warden.
Thanks in advance.
tldr; experienced CO hunter new to VA looking for company or advice around hunting in Amelia, Powhatan or anywhere else within 2.5 hours.
Howdy folks. I (26M) am temporarily living west of RVA and I haven’t had much time to make friends due to work… but I always make time for hunting season! I’ve only hunted deer/elk on our property in Colorado and heard the dense woods of Virginia is a whole different ballgame. I have both stalked deer and hunted with a blind before but I heard tree stands are the local preference. I’m apart of Black Creek Gun Club so I’m practiced and zero’d! Got all the proper equipment, and licenses.
I was planning on heading to both Powhatan or Amelia WMA for opening day. I was planning on scouting both areas on foot the weekend of November 9/10.
If anyone else plans on also scouting/hunting either of those places, or would welcome company within 2.5 hours of those places, I’d love to join you! If you have any advice or word of wisdom that you think would benefit a hunter coming from CO to VA, I’d also greatly appreciate hearing that.
My FIL lives in CO and has a similar relationship with hunter buddies in WV where they’ll host eachother when they draw in eachother’s states and share in their experiences across the country each season. I’m hoping to create something similar for myself!
Happy Hunting!
