went to the open house today for 2025-2026 rentals. the guy said my number is relatively low and i have a high chance of getting a placement so thats chill
i forgot to ask something at the open house tho so anyone with experience or at the open house know when the landlord will start contacting people on the waitlist? and for preferences will we get to choose room types (like number of baths), floor number, building, etc?
Just curious if anyone’s taken this course with dr. Yang Xu; I’ve changed up my note summary’s due to her different slide style.
If anyone has any advice for content/areas to focus on in notes, or whether she test on definitions and fine details or conceptual questions that would be much appreciated.
Also, if you know if she gives a content and definitions summary sheet/questions before the exam like dr. Mathur?
Hey guys, looking to sublet a two bedroom basement in a house. $950 a month. Sublet would start asap (Dec or Jan) and end in April with the possibility of signing the lease for the next year. PM if interested!!
I’m registered for it next semester but also have a heavy course load and now I’m wondering if it will be too time consuming. Is it manageable? TYSM
If I add money to my "student card", will I get the entire amount, or will it be deducted? I remember in first year most on campus students had to buy meal plans and there was a deductible for "overheard operating fees" or something
so this is probably a stupid question that not many people will know the answer to, but theres a couple who sells jewelry (necklaces, rings, pocket-watches) in the UC and I was wondering if anyone knows their schedule (or their name so I can look it up on gryphlife) I desperately need to buy a replacement of a charm I bought from them last year.
Are there people who decide to take a 5th year of biomed? If you have, can you share why?
I’m hoping myself and maybe others can find clarity in case I consider taking a 5th year
According to this page: Mechanical Engineering (MECH) < University of Guelph, I need to take 0.50 restricted electives in Semester 2. When I scroll down the heading 'Restricted Electives', should I be taking one of the '2.00 credits from Complementary Studies Electives' or one of the '3.50 credits of Mechanical Engineering Electives, List MECH-1' in Semester 2? I am confused.
Is anyone in this class right now? Please message me I need help
His name’s Geoffrey Cameron. I know he started teaching at uofg this year which is why I couldn’t find any reviews on him on rate my prof. Wondering what your experience was like with him for POLS 2230 Public Policy, in person or the DE version (i’m taking the DE version next semester) what’s the course load like? is he an accommodating prof, hard grader, and how are the assessments graded?
Thanks!
Not really sure about DE courses, but if it doesn’t I might have to end up taking SOC1100 and I’d rather take the FRHD 1010 DE courses tbh. It says section is full so I’m not sure if spots will open up like other in person courses
I keep seeing easy courses for first years but I want to see if there are any easy classes in the second year lol.
Hi folks - this is Jay Oliver, I am a prof in CLAS and SXGN. (Yes, I read this sub. Yes, you are all right about John Walsh being the best prof at UoG. From time to time I tell him everyone online loves him, but I am not sure he knows what Reddit is. Nobody tell him, for the love of god. He'd be a menace.)
Just popping in here to plug a new course we are introducing for W25: CLAS*2220, Greek and Latin Roots for Sciences! We're very excited to launch the course, which has been in the works for a long time. I did see a post about this course a few days ago, so I wanted to give y'all a few more details, in the hopes of boosting enrolment and spreading the word.
First things first: this isn't your typical Arts, Classics, language, or Greek/Latin course.
Let me explain. I teach CLAS*2000, Classical Mythology, every winter. It's always a delight to teach. It is a popular elective for a range of students, including many science students, and it always fills up very quickly. Who doesn't love myth? However, students hoping for an easy elective are sometimes a bit disappointed or overwhelmed by the amount of reading and writing the course entails. It's certainly not a bird course. Sorry, folks. It's not all fun and games and incest and cannibalism and infanticide. In addition to said fun and games, it's 8000 guys whose names all sound exactly the same, and a bunch of ancient poetry about dudes standing on hills talking to sassy goddesses, which I will make you read. Of course, I love all of that. I very much recognize many of you, having some however tenuous grasp on sanity, do not.
HOWEVER, CLAS*2220 is specifically designed for science students who need an arts elective but who don't want to, or don't have the time to, do the amount of reading and writing in other CLAS, and generally CoA, courses. It is also specifically designed to provide students who may be interested in, for example, vet school or med school or other further STEM study a bit of a boost by imparting knowledge of how scientific terminology works, and giving you the skills to recognize unfamiliar terminology more easily. Many universities offer courses like this one, and they tend to be popular with students. We just need a bit of help from you folks spreading the word and getting students in the classroom, and hopefully telling you a little about the nature of the course will help.
What CLAS*2220 is not is a pure language course like our Latin and Greek courses. As fun ("fun"?) as those are, they are pretty brutal in terms of the demands they place on your commitment. Many science students enjoy them and do very well, but they are decidedly not for everyone. That's not what CLAS*2220 is. We won't make you learn all the cases and conjugations and declensions and tenses. Nobody will be asking you to produce the 2nd person singular pluperfect passive subjunctive. You won't be reading Homer and Vergil, and you won't need to know the difference between Achilles and Aegisthus and Ajax and Aeson and Adrastus and Acrisius and Andromache and Agamemnon and....
Instead, you'll be learning the etymology, prefixes, suffixes of a bunch of different terminology specifically related to science, anatomy, and medicine, with the intention of enhancing your ability to easily learn and comprehend scientific, anatomical, medical terminology. Hopefully, this will then have a knock-on effect for any further STEM courses you take. Research suggests that courses like this contribute significantly to students' success in STEM. Did you know that 90% of scientific terminology comes from Greek and Latin? Imagine how much you are missing out on by not taking CLAS*2220! Can you really afford not to?!?!?!
In W25 the course will be taught by a sessional instructor, but it will be an experienced and highly qualified instructor with a comprehensive knowledge of the ancient languages. The nitty-gritty of the assessment will be up to the instructor, but the course will not require you to write any essays or traditional arts-type assignments. I imagine there will be plenty of MCQs. I imagine also that you will find the assessment much more "objective" and quantifiable than other Arts courses, which is appealing to many students.
Do consider enrolling. There's plenty of space, and I know many of you are struggling to find courses. We would be delighted to have you. I can try to answer any questions you have, but bear in mind the course hasn't been run yet, so we don't know exactly how it will look. If you have other queries about CLAS or SXGN while I'm here, fire away.
tl;dr:
Advantages of CLAS*2220:
Disadvantages of CLAS*2220:
Anyone who’s had the course Canadian Govt and Politics with Simmons, what was the course content like? And how many assessments were there and how were they graded?
Literally just that. They are very relatable and approachable. Really quick to reply to emails which are thoughtfully written and very helpful AND they just had hundreds of coding assignments to mark and the turn around was very reasonable and the feedback was extremely helpful (for me at least). I WISH all my TA’s were like these 3. If you know them PLEASE share this with them and let them know they are exactly what all TA’s should be!!!!
Got the midterm back a little ago and got a 46. I literally tried so hard to study but still got that mark. I did almost everything we were advised to do for studying. In total, I’m at a 58 in the course. We still have the pear essay due that’s about 7% and some econlabs but I was really hoping for at least a 75 in this course.
Edit: I’m planning on transferring to BCOMM which requires a minimum 70 average
During my first year, I had many friends at university. However, as time went on, many grew distant, people started to leave the friend group, and eventually, due to personal issues, I left the friend group as well. I won’t go into detail about why this happened, but it was absolutely necessary for maintaining my mental health.
Since leaving that friend group, I’ve been feeling extremely lonely. I go to campus for group assignments, classes, etc., and I regularly see people walking around and enjoying time with their friends. I don’t have this. I go to class, come back home, play World of Warcraft or work on some 3D art, study, and go to bed. It’s been the same routine for the entire semester. I miss having people to talk to. Occasionally, I meet up with some friends from my hometown or my boyfriend, but that’s it.
For some background, I’m a fourth-year animal biology student, and due to some issues I had in my first year, I’ll likely need to take a fifth year to complete my degree. Vet school is also something I’m considering. I found that during my first year, people were more eager to form connections. Yet, now everyone has their own groups, and prefer to stick to themselves.
Which program is better to get a higher gpa?
I wanna take Sociology as a liberal elective, but I'm torn between 1500 and 1100. Which one's easier/more interesting?
I am a prof in math & stats. A student of mine brought me a laptop that was left in ROZH*103 presumably yesterday (Wednesday October 30). I brought it back to my office and emailed the owner (the name when I opened it up was there so I found them through the U of G website). I know they are looking for this because they have sent out “find my device” calls today.
If you know someone looking for their laptop please tell them to check their email so I can get this back to them :)
do they usually open more spaces for bot 2000 and food 2410?
Thanks in advance
I haven't really been able to find anything online about co-ed double rooms upon request, so I thought I'md ask again. My girlfriend and I want a double room together, would that be allowed as long as we request each other as roommates? I'm a guy, just putting that out there in case someone didn't pick up on it
Edit: I emailed them and they said yea its all good as long as you request each other. You in fact can live with a different sex in the same room
Just wondering what you guys think of the lectures and labs? How was the midterm for you? Interested in hearing any and all opinions on the class
To switch from a bsc to ba I need to apply as a internal transfer right? or my program counselor can just waive me in.
Soooo how is everybody doing after the grades came out for mbg…
Personally, I have lots to say, but I’d love to hear other people’s perspectives lol
Help ! I have one more course to choose and I’m looking for an easy second year course I wanted to take ENVS 2110 but it’s full . Any Sociology/ psychology/ anthropology courses anyone recommends ? I’m already doing HROB 2010 for part of my AOA , I wanted to take MCS 1000 but I don’t want to do another first year course .
I need these courses next semester for my major and they’re full. PLEASE PLEASE let me know if you or anyone you know is dropping/has dropped either POLS 2350 Law and Politics with Baker, or POLS 2230 Public Policy with Cameron.
THANK YOU
Hello!!
So I just found out that studio art is suspended as of may 2024 which was disappointing to hear as I was really looking forward to having it as a minor. Im currently a bsc major and I wanted to minor in art, now I'm thinking of maybe doing a double major with studio art and my current bsc major? But idk if that's possible of if there are any requirements behind it. If someone was in a similar boat please let me know your experience. ty IA!!
