Installing newer Unimog diesel engine to make it CA smog legal...?

Has anyone considered installing a newer Unimog engine to make it comply with the 20 year rule. The Unimog would have to have a EPA sticker,,,

Parts

Hi all. I do not own a unimog, but I enjoy following this sub and reading about them. This question is purely out of curiosity, but how difficult/easy is it to source parts? Does Mercedes still support parts for "older" models?

Interested in a Crew Cab Unimog in the US

Very few unimogs come up for sale in US and even fewer of the crew cab.

Any thoughts on the elusive unimog I’m after. The boxier 1980 models have really caught my eye.

U 65

Unimog in deserts/sand dunes

Good day everyone, I have question for y'all. How does a unimog perform in deserts/sand dunes? I am looking for a truck to haul some cargo across a desert. I really like the idea of a unimog but I can't find much information on how they would perform in a desert. They are obviously quite a bit heavier than your normal 4x4. Would special flotation tyres help like those used in the trucks that set a altitude record a few years ago in Chile, I imagine they would cost quite a bit though. Thank you everyone.

Unimog hydrolic part name

Hi all,

Our new old Unimog 406 has a cherry picker module that isnt functioning any longer. It used to perform just fine until last weekend. The crane itself does move up and down, only the rotation is limited to the right side only. We are assuming it is caused by one parts marked as 5 or 6, but have no idea what they are called. Would any of you have any idea of their name or function? We tried reversing these parts, which then allows the arm to move to the left side only. ( so we were not stuck there!)

To illustrate what you are looking at further:

Arrow 1 incomming oil for arm rotation towards the right side

Arrow 2 hose connected to rotation pump moving the actual arm.

Arrow 3 hose connected to rotation pump, returning oil.

**ofcourse these functions turn around when the arm is supposed to move left.

Thanks for reading!

Unimog 404.114(Swiss)- Brake line flare style

Hello everyone, I have discovered that I need to replace my entire brake line system in my truck but have a couple questions.

What style of 6mm flare is proper for this truck?

Do the lines going to the brake booster have the same fitting at each end as everywhere else?

As some lines are not available, I was contemplating buying bulk lines and fittings for all the sections with unavailable OE parts. Is copper/nickel hard to work with?

Tire/wheel help

Hi All - I’ve struggled to find a good resource for balancing the tires/wheels on my 416.

my smallest set are in the 44 inch range which flirts with the upper limits of balancing machines at places like off-road warehouse etc. places like this usually place weights on the exterior wheel which eventually leads to me stripping or launching them when on the trail.

does anyone have any ideas on resources to help me with a better balance. I know there are limits to the balance-ability of such large tires but I have had them set up previously much better than they are now.

i can drop balancing beads in each tires one at time for days of trial and error but I would much rather have a pro help. It doesn’t seem that tractor places ever balance tires due to the low speed nature of use. Who balances big tires?

Ok I pulled the trigger on a Unimog

I am buying a titled in California 1986 Unimog and I live in Washington state.

I would prefer to ship it because I just can’t imagine the adventure driving it home would be.

So anyone have any experience shipping these ? I’m looking for suggestions on shipping companies also . I’ve shipped cars around, that’s relatively easy. But the size of this thing makes me think it’s gonna be more of a flatbed type movement.

TIA

1300 PTO advice

Good day fellow Unimog enjoyers.

I am a proud owner of an ex NZDF 1300 and am looking to make it useable as a tractor for PTO driven implements.

It currently has a PTO at the front but there is no connection or shaft to the rear.

Can anyone offer advice on how to approach this? Its hard to find any footage or images to illustrate where the rear PTO needs to be connected to the PTO transfer case.

Any advice is appreciated.

Advise on a purchase(not price though)

Pretty much sums it up. Let’s say price is in my budget for an expensive hobby/toy A 1986 former snowplow (US west coast)

Is it as fun to have as it seems? I am a Jeep person, and the appeal of the Unimogs ability to go where you point it is attractive.

Will I always be looking for parts? Maintaining?

I just love the look of these beasts. Worst case it winds up supporting non profits in parades. (Im new to the sub)

which models are and are not street legal in EU?

Unimog has been around for 70 years, so over the years naturally the models have varied, as did dimensions. but, i wonder which variants/models are perfectly street legal (as street legal as any regular car at best) in all EU and which are not. i am curious about it because if one day if i would have enough money to buy one, i want to know first if i would even be allowed to park it among normal cars or even in front of my house. the biggest models around AFAIK atm are 4000 and 5000. are they street legal for example?
