Why Wisconsin? Probably because this introduction is so unbearably difficult to write; because I
can't possibly fathom summarizing my surfeit of reasons into a fleeting introductory sentence.
Simply put, Wisconsin ticked every box in my mental checklist of what I looked for in a university.
Firstly, and most importantly, I wanted to go somewhere academically rigorous and researchoriented, allowing me to further my research in the humanities. Wisconsin indubitably fulfils this
criterion, with its countless labs, libraries, and plethora of monuments to research. I also wanted
to go somewhere with rich culture, tradition, and spirit. UW-Madison possesses the college
community that I know I’ll thrive in. Lastly, as arbitrary as it sounds, I wanted good food. With
Wisconsin being the breeding ground for cheese production in the US paired with the culinary
delight of an ice cream I picked up on campus, courtesy of “A Daily Scoop” while visiting campus, I
knew I wouldn't be disappointed in that regard.
During my visit, the towering halls paired with the rich diversity in the student body, all so different
yet finding unity in being a Badger, confirmed that without a shadow of a doubt, University of
Wisconsin-Madison would be my home away from home. Speaking to the student body only
ratified my belief that at Wisconsin, my love for the humanities would not only be cultivated but
enriched. My fascination with research but indifference to the disciplines usually associated with
it, such as STEM-related fields was met with a pleasant surprise when I first heard about the IRH.
Many Universities laud their research in biochemistry, or finding cures to diseases but few tout
their dedication to research in the humanities which is what truly set Wisconsin apart and drew my
focus. To research under a visionary like Dr.Benjamin Marquez or even have the pleasure of
attending one of his lectures on the Political Economy of Race in the United States would truly be a
dream come true. UW-Madison’s interdisciplinary approach to courses like Athenian Democracy
combines my interests in history and politics, which corroborates my belief that UW-Madison is a
culture I would be honored to be a part of.
I was always interested in the intersection between History, Economics, and Politics. Even as a
freshman in high school, I remember engaging in debates on rudimentary public policy with my
dad, discussing the ramifications of poor economic systems prevalent in modern Indian society. In
middle school, my teacher wrote home about my overarching obsession with reading up on old
Supreme Court judgments in French class. I loved the complexity of the law and often marveled at
how it lays the foundation for society and civilization. My love for the law was something that I
knew I would pursue.
My fascination with political science, despite being stifled by my peers who deemed the
humanities merely tangential to their STEM-based counterparts, led me to base my research on
the need for combating cybercrime, where I assessed legal frameworks and explored public policy-based solutions for fortifying India’s legal framework; this gave me an insight into the legal métier and added to my love for political science, augmenting my abundant interest in the humanities and yearn for an environment that fosters it. UW-Madison and its dedication of both intellectual and material resources to the political science department only consolidates my assurance that UW-Madison will provide me with the plethora of opportunities that I look for in a University. My love for UW-Madison goes beyond my desire to embody Wisconsin spirit during “jump around” or being showered with snowballs while rushing Bascom Hill. It is rooted in my admiration for the humanities, which, at UW-Madison, isn’t deemed an afterthought or begrudging obligation, but is the heart of learning. From joining the Alexander Hamilton Society to engaging in stimulating debates on political theory in North Hall, UW-Madison embodies the environment in which I know I’ll thrive.
Hey guys i got accepted and i was wondering when i would get my aid offer/ how much i would have to pay. do you guys know when they usually send it?
Hi guys! I got admitted to Madison and right now I'm kinda in a situation where I messed up the major I was admitted for but I want to be in a STEM based major where its very math heavy.
Im taking Pre-Calculus at my school right now and I feel like math is getting a little more comfortable for me now (I was terrible at math for a long time) but I know it is much different from calculus and I have no experience with it. Im planning on self-studying Calculus 1/2 the summer before I get to college but will I be super behind since I don't have as much experience in it as other students? What's some resources people use to get better at higher-level math (or just math in general lol)
Recently admitted out of state for computer science (L&S). I've set up my net ID and scholarship wish portal and everything. Looking to see if anyone has any recommendations on applying for scholarships on out of state students or any opportunities they would recommend. I would really like to attend Madison but out of state tuition can be expensive.
I am a prospective CS student at UW Madison ,and it one of my top choices currently. I noticed that the grading system goes from 4.0 to 3.5, and as I want to go to grad school, I would like to have a relatively high GPA. What is the usual cutoff for an AB vs an A, and do you need to fight to the top to get As?
I started with 18 credits this semester, but now I’m thinking about dropping a course. The deadline to drop without it showing on my transcript was January 29, so if I drop now, I’ll get a DR (Dropped) on my transcript. Does this have any negative impact, or is it not a big deal?
Recently, I got rejected from UW-Madison however for whatever reason I check my portal and now’s it’s asking for my mid term grades. Is this because they’re are reconsidering? Or is this a mistake? Perhaps something they do for everyone?
Got accepted to the union job. Probably work in the Daily Scoop and Strada during lunchtime. Do they give the employee time to eat their lunch? How strict are they on the schedule of employee's time shift?
Hi! I’m a freshman and I’m a little bit concerned about if my courseload is too heavy. I’m only taking four classes, but they’re Chemistry 104, Soc 134, Bio 152, and CS&D 210. I was originally only going to take bio, chem, and soc, since everyone told me taking Chem 104 and Bio 152 would be a lot of work, but then I enrolled in CS &D 210 (neural basis of communication) last minute because it seemed super interesting and fit into my schedule.
Has anyone taken CS&D 210 before and can let me know what to expect? Is it a pretty difficult course, or not that hard? It seems like there’s some extra credit options, but those seem a bit time consuming….
I’m thinking of dropping it and just sticking with what I had before (also is dropping a class bad?)
Thanks!
Just recently declined from UW Madison, and working on an appeal email. I’ve already requested my mid year senior grades and another letter of recommendation from a teacher. What should I be writing in the email? Do I write why I believe I would be a good fit for UW Madison like I did in the essay? Anything helps!
Hypothetical scenario:
For context: Roommate A and roommate B are roommates in a double.
If roommate A gets in trouble for having alcohol, etc in the dorm, but roommate B is out of the dorm and unaware that roommate A has commited the offense, would both roommate A and roommate B be punished or just roommate A?
TLDR: Do all roommates get punished for something only one roomate did.
I am taking genetics 605 this semester. I don’t know what to expect and how to prepare for this class. Any tips and recommendation so I can do well?
How's the ChemE department here? Is the student culture engaging for an international like myself?
A couple of my friends and I like to create a yearly checklist of fun, adventurous activities that challenge us a bit, let us explore the Madison area, and try new things. We’re happy to drive within an hour if it’s worth it!
Some examples from previous years:
This year, we’re planning to:
I’ve also heard about Thrill Factory Entertainment, which seems like a fun way to mix things up with activities like mini golf, laser tag, and escape rooms. Has anyone been? Would it make a good addition to the list?
Do you have any other suggestions for adventures or fun activities in the area? I’m happy to share our full checklist if anyone’s interested.
I was wondering if I should treat the additional info as a LOCI and express my continued interest in the school. Many are referring to the additional info section as a LOCI even though Madison does not ask for anything besides updates to extra circulars. I was wondering if you guys are going to treat it like a LOCI or just list new ECs?
I just got into CS 540 Fred Sala, not sure if i should take it, i am already taking CS760 Machine Learning. If anyone could help me with the syllabus that would be great.
I'm taking CS520 with Jinyi Cai this semester and I haven't found somebody to work on the homeworks together yet, is anyone else looking for a partner? I'm very lost in terms of material but I work hard and usually work much better in hard classes if I have a partner to work together with. (It's allowed)
Gives me the creeps
anyone know what this means?
I have submitted term withdrawal application on Jan 27th (before the deadline) but it is not yet approved by the Dean. I have tried emailing the Dean (Graduate School at gsacserv@grad.wisc.edu) but received no response here as well.
How many days does the Dean take for approving the application?
Is it mandatory to meet the Dean at his office even though I have submitted the withdrawal application before the deadline?
I had a medical emergency due to which I left for my home country
Note: I had directly submitted the withdrawal application on MyUW portal, not sure if I need to do something else
I was deferred from UW Madison like many others and I'm seeing a lot of people confused by what to do next. In the student center if you go to your application status you should be able to submit your mid-year grades. After reporting under that is a comment section where you would input your LOCI.
I’ve seen in past posts that mid year report isn’t required for intl students. In UW-Madison’s website it says in my country’s application requirements that grades from 9-11 grades are enough. The mid year report has just popped in my applicant center, will I be safe if I don’t complete it? I kind of don’t want to since I got 2 B’s in my recent term.
I am international student with a 3.9 GPA; SAT 1480 (790 math); 2 international robotics competition ( 2th and 4th place ); 20+ medals in national competitions. I got accepted to A&M and Purdue engineering with honors.
I applied for mechanical engineering. How competitive is engineering? I thought I was an outstanding student in their pool.
Hey, I just got accepted into Madison which I is crazy given that I was expecting a deferral at best, but now that I have gotten in to a school I am most likely going to go to, I wanted to reach out to any current students in Math/Stats to talk about the programs, opportunities, etc. If anyone has time, please let me know if we can PM. Thank you.
hey guys so I got deferred from UW-Madison early action for marketing. I had a very niche experience so if anyone has any knowledge that would be awesome. I happened to get in-state tuition since my dad is a resident but my highschool transcripts are oos. now for more info, I didn’t get classified as a resident until dec 18. I feel like there is a chance that they didn’t get to my application but I have nooo clue (they told my dad this was a possibility before we started the process) I have a 3.8 GPA 29 ACT, Captain of 2 varisty sports, business national honor society, a bunch of business related EC activities and what I think was some good essays. Is it likely I get in rd?!!?
Should I send them an email of a LOCI or not? I've been seeing so many posts saying that they've emailed admissions but idk exactly what to do. I know that I'll have to self-report my grades and that that'll b available in a few weeks but other than that idk what else to do because I really wanna get in.
