CARSA could use another seated hamstring curl machine!

ATM there's only one, along with the lying down hamstring curl machine which doesn't quite hit the same muscle stretch. I notice that this machine is the #1 most occupied machine at peak hours, so having another one would be really nice.

Not that I think CARSA is going to be buying any new machines anytime soon, with government transfer payments being still unchanged in 2024 - but hey, if they do, this machine should really be first on the list!!!!

Looking for a roommate

Howdy, I'm Joao (18m) 19 in 20 days. and I will be moving out of my parents place in the new year and I have found a place to move into but I would like to get a roommate to help out with the rent. The place is right across the street from Camosun Landsdowne campus and really close to Uvic. I will hopefully be going to Camosun in the new year for carpentry but its not set in stone currently as I am wait listed. I enjoy wood working, carpentry, nature, sports and video games. I'd like to say that I am quiet but I think people that know me would disagree. If you are interested please dm me and I can give more information and maybe set up interviews with ppl. I am looking for someone who is clean and can keep common areas tidy. It would be cool to have someone with common interests as I think that would be fun to share a place with but not necessary.

difference between HSTR100 and HSTR101

i'm taking history as an elective and don't want to suffer too much (my peers went feral taking HSTR101 this semester... not too sure why)

what's the difference between the two, and which one would build a better academic foundation with the least suffering ?

thanks!

Lost Sony earbuds @ SUB

Super long shot, but I’m in desperate search of my wireless Sony earbuds with the case that I am thinking I might have dropped at the sub on Friday evening! They are all black. I was borrowing them from a friend so it is vital that I get them back, or else it’s a double L :(

TIA!!

Prof Shout Outs!

Who were your favourite profs this semester?

I wanted to give a shout out to Dr. Iosub and Dr. Leitch for organic chemistry. They took a subject that I was terrified of and made it into my favourite class this semester! Dr. Iosub in particular is an absolute gem and deserves an excellence in teaching award.

I'm curious to see who everyone liked and for what courses! :)

I wanna go and check out some bars and clubs in Victoria after finals are over because I don't get out nearly enough. Any recommendations? I'm pretty new to Victoria so if you know any cool places to hangout, let me know.

Sngequ House Pod Kitchen

Hiii!
im moving into Sngequ in January for the spring term. I'm coming on exchange. I was wondering how the shared pod kitchen functions and what the vibe is like.

do I need to buy pots and pans/spatulas to cook with or are they provided with the kitchen?
also if anyone has experience being in the pods in Sngequ and would like to share stories or anything i'd love to hear them!

TIA :)

math 102 past final exam

Hey , I would really appreciate if some of you could send me a pdf or a link to a final that was done in previous years. Even a pictrue would do. I was not able to buy a previous final exam from SIGMA because of time conflicts with my classes. Thanks!

What is CAL?

What is CAL? Is it just for exam accommodations? I’ve heard a lot of students in my classes having “cal accommodations”. Is this something anyone can apply for? I have always thought it was an accommodation for student with disabilities etc…

Stat 252

Hey guys does Stat 252 have required labs? I have fit my schedule perfectly into 2 days but the Stat lab is only offered on Thursday. I know for a couple math classes I had last year, labs were not mandatory. Wondering if someone here knows. Google gave me a class outline from 2012

How hard is it to get into your desired engineering discipline?

Hey everyone,

I’m a first year engineering student, and with the first term coming to an end, I’ve been reflecting on how things have gone so far. I really want to get into Software Engineering, but I’d also consider Computer Engineering if I have to. That said, I’m feeling pretty nervous about whether I can make it into my desired program or not.

Coming into university from high school, especially in a completely new province, was a much bigger adjustment than I expected. I was very immature with my time management. I assumed what worked for me in high school would work here too, but I learned the hard way that university is a whole different ball game.

I also made the mistake of letting my ego get in the way and not signing up for CAL because I thought I didn’t need it. Looking back, I wish I had, because it could have saved me from some of the struggles I faced this term.

That said, as this term went on, I feel like I started to figure things out. I’ve learned how to study more effectively, stay disciplined with my work, signed up for CAL next term, and take better care of myself while living alone.

But now, with finals just around the corner, I feel like it’s too late to fully make up for my earlier mistakes.

I’ve done okay in my coursework, and I hopefully I’ll pass, but I’m worried about whether my marks will be good enough to get into Software Engineering. I know I have a better understanding of what it takes now, but I’m scared that my late realization might cost me.

For those of you who’ve been through this process, how competitive is it to get into Software or Computer Engineering? And do you have any advice for someone in my position?

Thanks in advance, and good luck to everyone with finals!

19th bday suggestions

Hi, I’m turning 19 in about 2 weeks. I’ll be celebrating with one or two friends, and I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for fun clubs/bars? Especially because my birthday is on a Monday and close to Christmas I’m not sure what the best place to go is

Equivalency - max courses allowed?

What is the maximum number of external courses you can use towards a degree?

Also, how old is too old for courses completed a few years back?

Cheers.

Edit 1: last post mentioning this was from 9 years ago and the max was 30 credits - wondering if this has changed.

Lost Player's Handbook!

https://preview.redd.it/e5v8cxy0xc4e1.png?width=465&format=png&auto=webp&s=4e5cab52c61bbffe1a421b11fd1d592a43da661c

I've misplaced my Player's Handbook for Dungeons & Dragons. It looks like the above image.
Really, really hoping I can track it down. My copy has a bunch of wavy pages because it was a shelf display copy that I grabbed and it had been flipped through quite a bit before I purchased it. I also think there are some notes taken in pencil on a few pages in there.

I know the chances aren't great at all, but if anyone sees or has it it, please oh please oh please oh please PM me. It's going to be a while before I can afford to replace it.

Are there any classes that teach HTML/CSS/Javascript this semester?

I see that CSC 130 teaches web development, but sadly it's not available this semester. Are there any other options for web development classes? I know basic HTML/CSS

Concession

Hey guys, as you can imagine this late in the semester it’s kind of that time where everyone’s panicking about upcoming exams and grades and stuff, and I’m in a bit of a pickle. I have a firm grip on all of my science courses, but my one elective isn’t looking too good. I reached out to my prof previously for an extension on a major assignment because I was facing some major housing troubles for the first couple months of the course, and they extended a very generous offer to me. Unfortunately, between dealing with my mental health and the extenuating circumstances of being without stable housing, I didn’t make the extension deadline. I’m at the point where I feel really guilty and defeated, and I just want to apply for concession. I’m so close to being registered with CAL, but not there yet, so they can’t advocate for my situation. I could probably provide documentation for like when my lease started as proof, but I’m not even sure id know where to submit it. If anyone can provide any insight or guidance about what I can do in this situation it would be greatly appreciated.

Withdrawal under extenuating circumstances?

I’m considering making a WE request, but I’m worried that it won’t get accepted. I’ve never made one before so I’m not sure what the threshold is for “being sick enough.” I can probably get documentation from a doctor and a mental-health professional.

Any insight would be very much appreciated.

Entrance grant based on high school average

Since we’re on the topic, I took a gap year before entering uvic last year and never got an entrance grant/scholarship based on my high school average which I’m assuming is because I hadn’t recently graduated that year. This doesn’t really seem fair unless it’s an incentive for students to go to university right after high school. Is there a way to contact someone about this if it isn’t too late? I was very excited to show off my high average to myself by getting a small grant of some sort. Even $50 would’ve been awesome. Shucks

Museum Studies credits don't count as electives - did I completely screw myself?

I'm in second year, doing an English Honours degree with a Museum Studies minor on the side. According to the fine print for this degree on the Academic Calendar, "None of the 300-400 level courses taken for the Minor in Museum Studies can be used to complete requirements for a student's Honours, Major, or General Program"

So does this mean that none of the credits I take for Museum Studies count for 300-400 level electives in my main program? If that's the case, I will need to take 31 courses in the next 2 years in order to graduate on time, and I'm old so graduating on time means a lot to me - I don't want to be starting my Masters in my 40s but I also don't know if I have the emotional fortitude to take 8 classes per semester while also applying for grad school and writing an honours thesis.

Has anyone ever successfully petitioned for some or all of those upper level Museum Studies classes to count as electives? Is it even worth trying to ask about, or will they just laugh in my face and tell me that I should have picked a different institution if I wanted an interdisciplinary degree? I'm good at charming administrators and profs, but I'm also paranoid that crossing authority will make my life hell, so I don't want to try unless it's worth it.

Edited to fix grammar error

How is the Psychology and Computer Science degree?

Im interested in applying to UVIC. I have a huge interest in psych and not so much of an interest in computer science, but I figured that the combination of something I’m passionate about paired with something that makes good money would be a good idea to major in. I know psych is a difficult degree to make money with, and what I want to be after I graduate requires a masters (therapist). I’ve heard once you get out of university, that psych doesn’t open up many job opportunities until you get a masters. I was just wondering how it is - and if there is a ton of math. I’d assume because CS involves a lot of math and psych involves statistics. Is it worthwhile? Thanks!

Dorm advice needed :(

Hey!! Im in grade 12 and live in the van area. I am planning on going to uvic but have no idea which dorm to apply for.

Im planning on getting a double room with my friend but need advice on the best dorm. I dont want to be on a quiet floor/substance free floor but would like to have a big room (the bigger the better) and preferably have a communal kitchen and be close to the main roads in uvic and be near everything. i heard some dorms have an ocean view and that would be awesome to have but not a priority. does anyone know how the Cheko’nien House and Gordon Head residence was or if anything else is better? Thanks so so much
