Help choosing resorts

Hey all,

My wife and I are planning a trip to alta/snowbird area in february, and wondering if it's worth making the trek to deer valley as well. We're both intermediate/advanced skiers on Ikon from CO. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Which of these first timer snowboard lessons on a budget?

These are group lessons:

Nordic Valley (1 hour drive): 2 hour lesson and lift ticket $131 4 hour lesson and lift ticket $211

Solitude (31 minute drive, would need to take bus or ride with someone): 3 hour lesson and beginner lift ticket $165

Brighton (37 minute drive, same situation as Solitude): 2 hour lesson and learner lift ticket $137

Thoughts? Thanks in advance for any input.

Ikon Blackout Dates in Utah?

I’m planning a trip to Utah during the Ikon blackout dates (12/27-1/1) and was wondering how busy Alta and Snowbird usually get during this time. I absolutely love these two spots and bought the full Ikon Pass this year, but I’ve been hearing mixed things about blackout dates.

Some people say the slopes are actually less crowded during blackout periods, while others mention it can get pretty hectic. Does anyone have past experiences or insights to share?

Bootfitter recs

Any recommendations for SLC/PC local boot fitters that have experience with touring boots? I recently lucked into a pair of Dynafit radial pros that are one size too small, and want to see about possibly getting them expanded a bit to fit me well. TIA!

If someone lost their Kia keys at snowbasin, I found it and am returning it to the lost and found at the base lodge. Hope you see this!

First time skiing in Ogden

I (M50) and my son (M15) are heading down to a family member's place in Ogden Utah in early Feb to go skiing. Both of us are avid skiers, however, being in Ontario Canada, our hills are small and generally icy. We do go out to Quebec and Vermont at least once a year. I would say by Quebec/Vermont standards, I am a very comfortable Blue run skier, and can do Blacks (but given the shape I am in, and experience, it's not my choice). Within Ontario, I don't think that there is a Black that I can't handle, and is my preferred run. My son, being a teen, is invincible... but honestly, is probably just above my level. All of our experience is on-piste.

Given it will be our first time ever out West skiing, I'm not really sure what to expect. We'll be there for 4 days. Right now the hills I'm leaning towards are Snowbasin & Powder Mountain. We are also bringing our own equipment (I ski a 92 width, he's on a 90). We'll be staying at the family members place, and I believe we will have access to a vehicle.

So while I have many questions, and am open to advice; the primary questions I have are; Better hill for our ability? Should we stick to one hill for the 3-4 days of skiing, or mix it up? Will our skis be good enough for skiing out west? Do I buy lift-tickets now, or wait till we get there? Do I have to drive to the resorts, or is there shuttles from the city? Have I overlooked a resort that you feel I should think about? Any other advice that I may have missed?

Best Resorts and Shuttles?

Planning a trip south this December to SLC. I have 3 days to ride and I'm curious what are the favorite resorts? Where are the best locations to stay for easy shuttle access? We are thinking of staying in Murry.

Family ski trip help

We have free accommodations in Midway, Utah from the 12/31-1/6. We were planning on taking our 4 kids skiing but DANG it's expensive. We'll have our car- so willing to drive an hour or so. Our older two qualify for the ski Utah pass and are good skiers. Our 9 and 6 year old will need lessons or ski school. Any suggestions on good places that are more budget friendly?

Rental car question

My family will be flying to Utah for the first time in December for a ski trip. We are bringing our ski equipment, and we will need a rental car to get around. Do you recommend renting with one of the major rental car companies at the airport or using Turo (I have never used Turo before)? Is it easy to get a car big enough for us (4 people + 2 ski bags) that also complies with the traction law? Since this is our first time to Utah any other advises will be appreciated. As Ikon holders we'll spend most of our time at Snowbird, but I am also thinking about spending a day at Solitude/Brighton.

Skiing Deer Valley/Park City?

We have a trip planned to UT the first week of January 2025 and we will be staying in a condo pretty much equ-distance from Deer Valley and Park City. We are a party of 4 intermediate+ skiers. We usually ski CO and this is our first trip to UT. We travel Weds to Weds so will have 6 ski days but plan on 1 rest day. Right now we are thinking of spending 3 days at PC and 2 at DV with either Saturday or Sunday as our rest day. This is mainly because DV is so expensive, otherwise we'd probably do 3 there.

What do we need to know before we go?

Any tips on what days to spend where? My only inclination right now is to avoid PC on a Saturday. We do not want crowds or long lift lines.

We had considered a day trip to Solitude but with Guardsman closed it takes us all the way back to SLC and in from the west making it about an hour. Is it worth it?

Any tips/advice is welcome. Thank you!

BCC checkpoint

  1. Why is the checkpoint a 1/4 mile up the canyon?

  2. If you don’t know if your tires/set up will pass go home or carpool.

Skiing or snowboarding post ACL Surgery

I’ve never been snowboarding or skiing.

My question or concern is I’ve had ACL reconstruction and meniscus repair once before (2 years ago) even though that sounds like a long time. My knee is not what it use to be. I can’t sprint and push like I use to. I wake up with pain. I’m only 27 years old male. My quad strength still is not what it was pre injury. But I’m healthy enough I think i could try skiing.

I went and got all the gear and season rental skis. But I’m a little scared and thinking i should probably switch to snowboarding. Knee injury and ACL tears are major and it took everything from me. I’m an outdoorsy athletic person. I hike. Trail run. Paddle board. Swim. Climb. I want to be able to do all that. And more. If I tear another ACL during skiing I’ll lose everything again. And the more I look into it the more common that injury seems to happen to skiers.

So I’m just trying to get some idea on if it’s that common of an injury? How do you prevent it as much as possible? How do you fall correctly? Should I just try snowboarding instead and return my skis?

It’s really bothering me. And I can’t afford another 12 grand for knee surgery. And would like to enjoy more hobbies.

couple looking for ski friends

Hey! My partner and I are looking for ski buddies to hit the slopes with and maybe grab drinks after. We have Ikon passes. We usually go on weekdays to avoid the crowds.

My partner has been skiing all his life, but I am a relatively new skier and there are some black trails I won't do. He's a wildlife biologist and I run a tech startup. Both in our late 20s.

heading out on Wed if anyone wants to join!

Market research….Would you pay a little more for a Utah residents pass that gives Utahns access to all the non-mega pass resorts (pcmr, solitude, DV) in Utah if it pinched out IKon and Epic?

We need to rid our state of the IKOn and Epic passes that have made the Utah ski experience into Colorado…traffic problems and Ikonic lift lines. Plus we are sending a huge portion of our Utah ski tourism dollars to Colorado (Alterra & vail are Colorado corporations)

Lodging for a week when skiing Deer Valley

I've never skied Deer Valley, and would like to try it for a week this winter. Wanted to keep the lodging under $1k for the week. Looking at AirBnB, it seems like my closest lodging options are along Kearns Blvd in Park City, or a cluster of condos off of US 40, at Deer Hollow Rd. Seems to be right across from where they're building the Deer Valley East Village.

What's the best way to do this? Stay off of Kearns Blvd, and bus to Deer Valley? Or stay across US 40, and bus or drive to the Jordanelle Gondola?

Ski Recommendation - LCC when there hasn't been new snow

Question: I currently have a DPS Pagoda 112RP for powder days that I like, but am looking to add a ski to the quiver for the non-powder days.

Background Info: I ski mostly in LCC. I am 6'2", 230lbs, have 130 flex Fischer The Curv GT boots. I can ski most of Alta and Snowbird, but not jumping off of cliffs or doing anything too crazy. Have skied about 120 days in my life. I have zero interest in going 70+ mph or doing anything overly aggressive at this point in my life (got hurt last year and have a lot of responsibilities in my life).

I have a playful ski style. I like exploring and having fun, don't care a ton about anything technical (though I mostly ski "expert" areas of Snowbird/Alta. I do like to lay down a good carve here and there, but don't usually spend a ton of time on the groomers (I try to hunt out whatever little powder I can find).

I own a pair of Nordica Navigator 90's (186cm), but feel like I may have outgrown that ski and have had some issues with the bindings on those, so looking at getting a better ski and retiring/selling those.

I have considered getting a pair of Nordica enforcers 94 (191cm), but am not sure if the flat tail would have enough rocker to accommodate my playful style. Also, I don't need stability for anything extreme. I probably spend most of my time in the 20-30 mph range, with the occasional bump up to the 40s.

Where to build a jump

I’m trying to get a backflip this year, where’s a good spot to build a jump that’s pretty easy to get to. I don’t really have backcountry gear.
