Courses being cut

I heard certain courses are being cut due to budget restraints, does anyone have a list of courses/fields/units that are affected by these cuts?

WAM Boost Subjects?

Hey guys,

I've got a spare elective next year and was wondering if anyone knows any easy subjects running that could help boost my WAM. I'm looking to go into honours and need to meet the minimum WAM.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

What is the course structure like of a combined degree

I combined Master of Business analytics which is a 1.5 year program and Master of Business just to make it a 2 year program. However, what is the course structure gonna be like, is it gonna be 50-50 importance for both in the combined degree. Or is it gonna be more of Master of business analytics and less of Business?

Bachelor of creative arts / visual arts - Any good?

Hey! Just wondering if I can get an opinion on the visual arts degree, as I have applied for it but don't fully know if I'm convinced I want to study it here, as I see very little about it compared to other places I'm applying so I can't really get a true grasp of whether it's decent or not. I'm from rural/regional nsw so it's not like I know anyone who goes there either and may know someone who studies it to ask. Thanks!

When is the perfect time to move into the dorms?

Hello, I'm curious about how early you guys move into the dormitories(Campus East). Because I have to start paying my dorm fee from Feb 4th, but the orientation starts on Feb 24th, so I'm wondering when is the perfect time to move in.

Insight into intensity of MCP program FT & accommodation

Am trying to gauge whether I will have any time (or mental capacity lol) to work a couple of days alongside study.

How many days should be allocated to coursework/research/placement?

Are classes mainly f2f?

Any recommendations for accom for mid 20s, studious but also keen to make good friends?

it feels even more wrong for them to be discontinuing Indigenous Studies

i feel like we need to do more about how like the dean or whatever is literally the ceo of the company that recommended all the cuts the uni is doing like how is that legal tf

i think discontinuing indigenous studies is even worse than the other courses like how can you justify that? they claim they "acknowledge and respect" Indigenous Peoples but remove their biggest course that could do some good and educate people.

Questions about KBV

So sorry if this subreddit is sick of accom questions, but I'd love some clarification on Kooloobong living (to avoid crashing out near the move-in date) specifically in the 4-bedroom units.

  1. What's the consensus on 4-bedroom units? Are the rooms/facilities in okay condition?

  2. Are the units single gendered (all female/male)? I assumed they would be but with the individual room locks I saw I figured I'd ask anyway.

  3. Are people in the building and roommates generally friendly/easy to make friends with ?

Thanks <3

I’m scared to move to Wollongong

Hi everyone, I’m 19 (almost 20) and living in Cbr with my parents. I just applied to study mechatronics at UOW, and I really want to go. The problem is that I come from a pretty cultural household, and my parents have always been against me moving out. When I finished school, I wasn’t even allowed to apply to unis outside this godforsaken city.

I started at ANU but had to take a break after some personal issues and mental health struggles. Since then, I’ve just been working. I won’t get into the details, but staying in Canberra has been really hard for me, and I feel like I need a fresh start. UOW feels like an amazing opportunity for both the degree and the change I need, but I’m terrified of what will happen if I tell my parents.

I don’t want to damage my relationship with my family, but I also feel like staying here is holding me back. I don’t know how to break it to them or how to handle things if I do move and end up on my own. Like rent?? Looking for a job in a city where i don’t know ANYONE. I’m so scared of making the wrong decision and being stuck.

Like I realise I’m a full grown adult yall😭 I swear I pay for my own shit. I’m just scared to be on my own and possibly not have my family even speak to me. Hope this isn’t sounding too pathetic.

Law/Business at UOW timetable

Hi all, my family member is going to be studying Law and Business at UOW (Main Campus) next year (2025 commencement) and we were wondering what the requirement for F2F classes is/ what the spread of classes through the week looks like. Are there any current students that can please provide some idea? For context we are from Sydney and are just determining if we should move closer or not. Thank you!

UOW cutbacks (personal experience)

I would just like to say for students who are affected by the cutbacks. My degree was discontinued in 2020. Since then, I had all my classes clash so it took me 6 years instead of 3 to finish my degree. I also didn’t have enough credit points to graduate because my classes were also discontinued. Furthermore, I could not get a supervisor for honours because no one was offering projects that could cater my degree. My advice would be to follow up ASAP and consider a degree transfer or found out as much as you can so you don’t go through the same troubles as me. You might be able to substitute discontinued classes. Either way make sure you are well informed because I had little to no help or advice from UOW.

Let's stop language cutbacks!

https://chng.it/NRpWxH52Bm

"We strongly condemn the proposal from the University of Wollongong to disestablish its entire Languages Discipline, including English Language and Linguistics, Mandarin, French, Japanese and Spanish, effective 31 January 2025. Language skills and cultural competency cannot be outsourced and are essential to an Australia adapted to our globalised world of multilingual commerce, cultures and geopolitics. We call on the University to reverse this shortsighted decision immediately.

Languages at Wollongong are a thriving scholarly and teaching disciplinary block, which consistently draws significant enrolments for a regional university. Wollongong Languages staff are internationally recognised researchers, with several ARC and international grant-holders, experts in areas as diverse as functional and applied linguistics, dialects and creoles of the Francophone and Hispanic worlds, medieval and modern literature, medical discourse and disability studies. They include three holders of regional and national teaching awards and are respected among peers and organisations in their field nationally and internationally.

Languages are not only vital assets in a rapidly globalising world and recognised as priority career skills by the Australian Government, including in concrete terms through its Job-ready Graduates Package. They also foster profound critical thinking, interdisciplinary and cross-cultural competencies in our students, support our multicultural communities and generate crucial new knowledge that strengthens academia, the economy and society.

We call on all colleagues, students and friends of languages in Australia and abroad to mobilise against this shortsighted and harmful decision. We stand with the NTEU and our UOW colleagues at this difficult time and urge you all to sign this petition, write to the University and share widely with your networks.

Most importantly, we call on the University of Wollongong to acknowledge the importance and viability of Languages at UOW and to abandon its plan."

Cutbacks

Why isn’t this reddit blazing with panic about this? UOW is canceling all languages, history, maths… how will this impact existing students majoring in a language? Can they not complete their degrees? Will next year’s overseas exchange program still be happening?

Academic Consideration

Hey everyone. I'm currently a student at the UOW College. For a certain period of time in the summer session i wont be present, during this time i miss 2 mid sessions on different days. My circumstances aren't covered on the academic consideration website.

I was wondering if they would accept medical certificates on both of the days i had my midsessions. or would they find it suspicious and deny it?

I really appreciate any advice on how to handle it!

uow accommodation help!

i got my offer for bachelor of psych science for march 2025 and i’ve been looking on the website at their accommodations — but most of the reviews are rather ‘outdated’ so i wanted to know how they acc are bcz im looking for a shared room (1 other person) 🥲

so far i’ve heard that bangalay is for like families/post grads kooloobong’s reviews are kind of scaring me but it’s nearby campus east is quite far but it’s quite nice i-house is for internationals and is quite nice too

since it’s my first time going to aus, i don’t want to be too far from the uni/markets and i also would like a warm and calm environment but not too boring 🥲

any help or advice would be appreciated 🫶

Graduate Certificate in Business Analytics at UOW (online or Sydney campus)

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone is doing or has completed the Grad Cert in Business Analytics from UOW. I'm considering enrolling in this for 2025 and would love to hear any insights anyone can share from experience. As someone based in Sydney, I'll be considering studying at the Sydney Business School campus OR more likely, through UOW online. If anyone has had any experience with studying online with UOW, I'd be super grateful to hear any thoughts or impressions. Cheers!

Anyone here done or know someone who did an engineering and physics double degree?

As the title says I’m contemplating whether to do a double degree in mechanical engineering and physics.

Before applying for unis I was going to do a Bachelors in physics or astrophysics, but then hearing the horrid job prospects in Australia it kinda turned me off.

Mech engineering seemed like the next best thing for me, lots of physics but much more good job opportunities. I’ve looked through the subjects you take and the minor of physics you can take, but it’s not very in depth. My main reason for thinking about a double degree is that I still come out with an engineering degree but still get to pursue physics at an academic level more in-depth and to explore my interests.

Just wanted to hear from anyone’s opinions or experiences.

Defer exams due to mental health problem

Hi everybody, as we all know the exams are coming up in 2 weeks time, but I don’t think my mental health is good enough to take everything and study all at once at this time. That’s why I’m thinking of getting paper from the doctor to sit the exam later, but I’m not sure how that works. I have been experience anxiety and depression for a long time but never actually went to therapy or consult, so I’m afraid they wouldn’t take mental health as a reason. Do you need to have proof that you have been experiencing depression for a long time or not? Thank you

Graduation

I’m a little confused with the UOW graduation ceremonies.

If you are finishing your degree in semester two of a year, do you have to wait till the following April to attend a ceremony?

I understand you’ll receive your degree through eQuals but I’m trying to work out if you attend the October of the same year or the following years ceremony.
