I’m of the opinion you shouldn’t hang your food and bring a bear can instead. To that end, I’m thinking about getting a Nunatak Bears Ears pack. I usually go backpacking in the Sierra and ANF where bear cans are suggested/required.
Are there any places in SoCal where bear cans are not needed at all? The only place I can think for longer hikes is Joshua Tree and Death Valley. I’m thinking in those cases I’ll just put something else down below where the bear can would be.
What do you think?
UPDATE: i have permits for iva bell in june
Based in LA. Looking for some new hiking buddies, interested in backpacking death valley and iva bell if/when things calm down with covid. Im also getting vaccine early bc I’m in clinical trial so I’ll be fully vaccinated by march. 31M engaged here, my fiance isnt as into UL as me and has to watch our puppy. Hmu if u wanna day hike first, PM me!
A bit of a short notice but I have been itching to hike this trail for a while and now that it has cooled down a bit I think it’s time.
Looking to get there late Friday or early Saturday to leave enough time to cache water. I’m aiming to do it in 2 days but can go up to 2.5 days if need be.
As the title says, I’m looking for someone to hike this with. I think it’s be pretty fun to hike with other people. It’s also make the logistics a little easier if we can park one car at each end.
I’m 25M if that matters. Shoot me a pm if you’re interested.
Heading out next week. Trail news is hard to find with not so many folks out it seems. Not too worried about a 17 mile amble, but anything recent and notable would be appreciated!
I need free beer
Sadly, my two friends I was going to do it with dropped out. I'm flexible on when to the trail but was hoping to beat July heat waves.
Is there anyone in the subreddit that was thinking about doing the TRT? Preferably only guys out of respect for the gf. Thanks!
Hey friends,
Just tossing it out there. Wanting to meet some local friends who enjoy backpacking and going UL in the LA area. Let me know if anyone is interested.
A wonderful member of r/ultralight sent me this link to a lollipop in the Sespe Wilderness and it sounds like a perfect Spring (March-early April) hike. I think 3 hard or 3+ days would work well considering the hot springs you walk past.

Would anyone be interesting in making a solid commitment in that time frame? I'll go regardless but if we organize something maybe it'll attract some more folks.
I posted here a while ago looking for West LA people who wanna hike and got a ton of responses! I was hoping to reach out again to see who definitely wants to come so I can plan and budget.
The trail will be from two harbors to Avalon, ending with beer and oysters. As of right now, it's officially me, my friend, possibly my hiking handicapped but gorgeous girlfriend, and a Reddit hiker I met here. Departing San Pedro Thursday morning on the ferry.
Insta is walkeronthetrail so feel free to message there so I can make a group chat. Would like to meet whatever crew before the hike over coffee or a kick back. Only have enough space for about 6-8 people with the campsites I booked. Still need to book a hotel for Saturday night.
Like most people on here, I'd love to meet fellow hikers and talk gear and plan trips! I've tried to get all my friends into the hobby but I have few takers. Planning the trans Catalina in October and would love to bring more people. Located in Sherman Oaks but hike everywhere!
Catalina Dates: 17th-20th Two Harbors to Avalon (last day is mini hotel room party)
Hi, I just found this sub and was wondering if anyone wants to meet up and talk gear/plan a trip or something.
I realize this isn't a very active sub, but planning a thru and thought I'd see if anyone else was interested. I know it'll probably be hot with the Santa Anas blowing.
Any one interested in getting out next weekend for some beers and hiking around on these trails? I was thinking about heading up to the Chorro Grande Trail on Friday night, hiking that to the Reyes Peak Trail and then to the Piedra Blanca on Saturday/Sunday if anyone's down!
I sub to both r/ulmidwest and ulsocal/ and am stealing this idea from the midwesterners.
Let's discuss the weekend hike options, locations only. Dates are TBD and I think that would be best chosen by a different poll.
GOOGLE DOCS sheet for proposed locations. I added the Sisquoc trail that someone else mentioned in a different thread.

We can add a poll to vote later.
Hey guys, and welcome. Let me start off by saying I am pretty excited to get this thing off of the ground and meet some folks! Also, I just moved here from North GA last May to Ventura and have had a hard time find hiking pals (kinda hard when you live in a surf town). Let's get something going!
I don't know how many of you hike in Los Padres, but the USFS completely shut it down due to the Thomas Fire. I spend a lot of time up there, so the shutdown impacted my hiking throughout December. However, they have re-opened the northern part. Here is the updated closure map: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd568106.pdf
Howdy all - I’m and experienced backpacker but new to both UL and the SoCal region. Looking forward to getting to know some of you!
Does anyone have experience from the last few years going up into the San Gorgonio wilderness in a dry winter? I didn’t get a chance to see it in the summer and don’t have good snow gear, but I’m interested to try it out since it’s looking like it might not snow/snow very minimally this year.
