Looking for a last minute shuttle from north SNP entrance station to Rockfish Gap early Saturday. Partner and i are vaxxxed and have $ to offer! Help?
It is just a dream till you make it a plan, right? So, here’s a question: I am a weekend warrior with moderate overnight/multiple day hiking experience. Lighterhike link below. My base weight is around 11 give or take dependent on the time of year. I’m interested in comments about through hiking just the Virginia section of the AT. Plans, typical stops, etc. I am making it a bucket list item. I’m in decent shape and MTB frequently. My wife, who will do it with me, is a avid runner and has done marathons. I’m not really worried about the physical endurance aspect. Probably going to section hike it over a 2 year period in periodic longer stay overnights of 3-4 days. Interested if anyone has any notes, recommendations, etc. Thanks in advance.
Hey guys,
Just moved to Richmond from MA and I'm looking for some resources for hikes! I've never been in the area before and I'm feeling like a fish out of water on where I should head out. I get Shenandoah and Blue Ridge but specifics like a book with trails, a website, or another group would be really helpful!
Any chance a geargasm might happen in 2019?
Was hoping to try on some other backpacks in person, see some hammock setups, and maybe some tents.
Has anyone hiked the whole trail or portions of it? Keeping a thru-hike in the back of my mind for the fall. I found a decent resupply doc but am curious about anecdotal experiences on the trail. Any other good resources?
All part of a goal to hike all the trails in PA!
So I planned a little overnight hike in Shenandoah this weekend. Route is based on this one found on all trails -- https://www.alltrails.com/explore/trail/us/virginia/cedar-run-trail-to-hawksbill-to-white-oak-trail-loop
we'll be staying the night at the Rock Spring hut on the AT, then continuing on with the loop.
here's the caltopo I made for it.
red and purple is day 1, day 2 is the rest.
I'll be with my fiance, another fairly experienced hiker and UL reddit guy, and two backpacking noobs. They are very active rock climbers, and have day hiked and car camped a bunch, but have never backcountry camped. I'm pretty excited for them.
It will definitely be pretty cold. bring it.
would love to meet any reddit folks in the area.
just reply to the thread if you're interested.
Premise of this thread is to provide a place for people who live locally to have an opportunity to try out/inspect gear before they buy, by meeting up with others who live locally and own the piece of gear in question. Post if you have a piece of gear you'd like to checkout before dropping some coin.
Any chance another geargasm could happen this fall? Couldn't make the last one but would lobe to try out some gear before buying.
Looking to try out:
Backpacks: ula ohm, gg gorilla or mariposa
Tents: tarptent stratospire / saddle, The One, Lunar Solo/Dup, 3F UL
What’s up. From the Lehigh Valley! I’m usually off during the week and spend them hiking. Heading out for an overnight tomorrow. AT heading north out of DWG. Starting at 3ish 4ish going until the sun goes down/I feel like stopping.
Registration is open for DC UL Backpacking’s annual Geargasm event) being held June 22-24 at Elizabeth Furnace State Park in northern VA. It’s a great opportunity to meet other UL’ers in the region and check out demo gear from UL cottage companies (YAMA, Gossamer Gear, ULA, Vargo, North x North, Elemental Horizons, + more), not to mention all the personal set ups everyone brings to show off. If you’ve been wanting to check out a particular shelter, pack, UL sleeping pad, cooking set up, or some other piece of UL gear, you’ve got a good chance of seeing it show up here.
There are also skills, DIY, and LNT sessions, folks giving pack shakedowns, and the opportunity to learn what hammocking is all about. Not to mention it's just a fun event and a chance to hang out with some good people. Here are some pics from prior Geargasms if you want a sense of what it's all about.
No need to join or be a DC UL member to attend Geargasm, although once you meet a bunch of us you'll probably want to anyway. Hope to see a bunch of you there!
[Update 5/3] Here's a current list of vendor's that will be participating, either through attending in person or sending demo gear. I'll update the list as more are confirmed.
[update 5/4] added Enlightened Equipment to the list
[update 6/18] updated to final list of vendors participating. Also, High Tor Gear Exchange will be attending and collecting clean used outdoor clothing and gear for consignment - you'll get a check when your item(s) sell.
Anyone in the area? Been doing lots of hikes in Wharton state forest and Brendan t Byrne, Prepping for a batona trail thru hike this fall. Anyone interested in hiking the area? I would be happy to hike with a buddy!
I’m going to try to do the 110 miles of the AT in Shenandoah National Park from March 29-April 2. Would welcome company or advice.
I’ve got an MLD Prophet coming in late February but I am feeling particularly impatient to test out my new ul setup. Does anyone in Maryland have any of the similar packs in medium that they would be willing to rent/lend me for a month and half or so? I could provide collateral if necessary...
I was looking at the DC UL Group and saw that they did a seemingly fun version of Dolly Sods! We would drive over Friday night and finish up Sunday. It includes a 25 mile day so be ready with your legs! here is the caltopo map for it: https://caltopo.com/m/78QT
PM me for more details and to see if we can do a ride share.
Title says it all. Going to start at Pen-Mar around 8 or 9am on Friday and finish up on Sunday. Tentative game plan is 15/18/9 for mileage. Anyone care to join?
