What other events are there at Davis at the moment?

I was wondering what other events are happening at Davis. Im doing Summer Session 2, and in the past week, I’ve noticed a lot more students on campus-so much so that there are now lines for the DC. This morning, I also saw a bunch of people standing outside Peter J. Shields Library. What was that about? Just a few moments before writing this a group of people(sounded like 50ish) were singing happy birthday outside. I thought Orientation for both transfers and first year is suppose to be next week.

For my first-generation students

Your parents drop you off at college in an old car, recounting stories of the hardships they endured in their home country. It's their first time ever being on a university campus. They miss the parking spot because they cannot read the sign, and soon, everyone is arguing, placing blame on each other as you try to guide them to the right place.

You walk into your dorm room and immediately notice the difference. Your roommates and neighbors come from families that seem much better off. You can tell by how they speak English so fluently, their brand-name clothes, and their confidence. They’ve brought expensive pillows and soft blankets from Ikea while you grabbed the cheapest bedding you could find at Walmart. It’s hard not to feel out of place, but don’t lose sight of why you're here: to get an education, to change your family’s circumstances, and to prove to yourself that you belong.

When classes begin, you might feel overwhelmed. You didn’t get the same academic foundation as your peers, and it's easy to feel like you’re already falling behind. But that’s okay. It doesn’t mean you’re not capable—it just means you came from an underfunded school. Maybe your professor will criticize your writing, which will sting because you worked hard on it. Maybe you don’t know how to format references because nobody ever taught you that in high school, and you’ll feel dumb trying to figure it out. But remember, it’s not that you're dumb—you just weren’t given the same resources. You might feel guilty because you put "proficient in Excel" on your resume, but you’ve never actually used it beyond a few basics.

Meanwhile, your classmates were learning it in middle school. You start to wonder, “What was wrong with my education system?” It’s frustrating, but don’t beat yourself up. You’ll self-learn.

Finding your community will take time. There will be moments when it feels like nobody understands your background or your struggles. But don’t give up. Keep searching for people who get it—who understand the hustle, the drive, and the dreams that brought you here. Eventually, you’ll find your people. Remember, you belong here just as much as anyone else. Stay focused on your goals, and don't let the temporary discomfort of feeling out of place hold you back. Keep in mind that you are on your own in college. You need to help yourself, or no one else will. Keep seeking help when you are struggling.

I am so proud of you all, and I know that you all will be successful in your future careers.

What is World Wide Web Virtual Lecture?

Sorry for a stupid question. I am an incoming PhD student and wondered what "World Wide Web Virtual Lecture" means. I have a "World Wide Virtual Lecture" class on Monday, but the discussion laboratory is in person on Wednesday. I am trying to avoid coming to campus on Monday due to my commute, if possible.

Paying Tuition DEadline

I'm paying my tuition through loans as of right now, and mainly through the federal parent PLUS funds but I don't think the documents and stuff will go through before I can make it before the September 15th deadline, can I still pay late or is it just over for me?

Orchard Park Rent/Parking

Hi!

New to Davis & just moved in to OP for fall. My financial aid seems to have covered all the expenses for tuition/rent/fees/etc. with a negative balance, so nothing left to owe.

Questions are:

  1. Does Orchard Park require rent monthly or quarterly? How does financial aid cover housing payments?

  2. Is there a way to have the parking covered by financial aid as well? Or is that something we have to pay out of pocket for to park a car at the apartment lots.

Thanks!! 🙏🏼

How reliable are the mini fridges in the dorms?

I’m an incoming freshman and I have to give myself injections every 4 weeks for a medical issue I have. My medication needs to be refrigerated at a certain temperature and is very expensive. I was wondering if I should store it in the provided mini fridge in my dorm or if I should store it in the student health center?

POL 001 vs POL 006 (1st YEAR)

I have POL 001 with Prof. Mackenzie & POL 006 (brand-new lower-division course) with Prof. Adams. Should I take both at once or should I drop one? If I should drop one, which one should I remove?

Need help ASAP LOL!!

equitable access grant

my financial aid awards updated and i’m apparently geting an equitable access grant for all 3 quarters. i have never received this grant before. i already opted out of equitable access though. does this mean i’m getting a free amount of $169 that i can use for whatever or does it have to be applied to equitable access?

PHY 7B and BIS 102

Hey, I wanted to know if anyone has taken both PHY7B and BIS 102 together, and how manageable it is. These are the big classes I’m planning on taking them together winter quarter. I understand both are extremely difficult classes. Im also planning on taking 3 more, much easier classes for minors and an English requirement, and I also have to work. Any useful tips to do well while taking both?

any advice/suggestions taking MAT 21C after finishing MAT16 series?

hello!!! i'm a third year that's planning on taking MAT 21C this fall quarter with Professor Liu (or potentially later i'm not sure) and I was hoping to get some advice on how to prepare for it. i finished the MAT16 series in my first year, so I'm really rusty but i'm willing to put in as much time & effort as I can. this is probably hopeless but I'm trying to believe in myself 😭 for context, i'm taking it for a minor prerequisite. if you have any advice or suggestions, i'd really appreciate you sharing! thank you so much :D

Getting Worried

It's about 3 days till the deadline of the payment for fall quarter, and neither my scholarship nor my uc ship health grant has been applied yet. My scholarship placeholder in myawards now says accepted as of today at the very least, but it is still very worrying to me that the figures in mybill haven't changed yet.

If anyone is experiencing the same thing or has any knowledge of what is currently going on, posting it down below would be awesome.

Thanks.

Best place/way to learn to bike?

Pretty much the title. I haven’t ridden a bike in a long time (since I was a kid) and I just recently moved in. I recently got my learner’s permit so at least I’m familiar with traffic laws. However, I’m still too scared to get on the road right away and I feel like that can go wrong in many ways.

Will the orientation “class” be available for the duration of my time at UCD?

I find a lot of this info helpful but I want to have it accessible. Otherwise I can take notes n shit but I’d rather just have it available for recall lol

Could I miss the first “week”?

Hey I’m an incoming transfer student and hoping to get a job as an EMT while I go to Davis. I got a call back from a company but I’d have to attend a week of orientation which would be a 9-5 Monday-Friday. The soonest I could do this would be the week of the 23rd. So from my understanding I’d miss the 25th and 26th of instruction. The issue is I’m guessing my best bet is to email my professors but for my physics course it’s currently just showing as The Staff as the instructor. The first lab is mandatory and my labs are scheduled Tuesday and Thursday. So my question would be do we have labs on the 25 or do they start on the first full week? Any advice on how I should go about this? Could I make it work or do I have to wait till some other time to try and miss a week ?

Horror Club?

Hello! My name is Isaiah and I am an avid horror fan and would really love to start a club at Davis

I have a general idea about what the club could be about and have a lot of ideas for events and fundraising. I want the club to be similar to the film enthusiasts club but for horror media (Movies, TV Shows, Books, Etc) especially in the aspect of discussing movies and possibly doing watch parties. I'm open to all sorts of ideas and think this could be such a fun club.

If there is enough interest I can definitely create a discord group so we could discuss the club further.

Edit: I have created a discord so you can message me for the link if you are interested in helping me create this club!

Members of the Aggie Arts Committee!

I don't know who to reach out to, so I'm throwing it out into the wild. As the official ASUCD committee with the mission to provide our campus and community with art which is uniquely reflective of the university's history and diverse student experience, please propose legislation with the purpose of limiting (or preferably outright prohibiting) the use of AI-generated imagery across the units of ASUCD. This should be done to support artists everywhere, but most importantly to support our students and local artists.

Tuition Payment

Hello, I am a parent attempting to navigate all of this for my incoming freshman. I want to pay the balance that is due by Sunday 9/15. Does the online payment service (touch net/paypath)charge for credit card and also debit card payments? It says it’s a 2.95% fee. Also how long does this payment take to clear? Will the payment process before the 9/15 deadline if I pay tomorrow? We have called the financial aid office and we have been on hold and or hung up on so we are looking here for answers. TIA

Waitlisted for 007

What should I do? The ELWR has to be completed in freshman year right? But every class for it is completely full, no one is ever dropping it so the waitlist hasn't moved in weeks.

Fall Quarter Refund (Question)

I’m not entirely sure how the refund works, what am I meant to use this money for? I want to work on a budget for the quarter but I don’t know how to include the refund as I’m unsure as to its purpose.
