TLDR; professor mocked my culture in class and made the whole class laugh, then they assigned me to peer review on a day where I asked to be excused for a cultural obligation, they wouldn't accommodate my culture, I feel bullied and idk the next appropriate steps
Within two weeks of being in their classroom, they shared something I told them about my culture and how i would use it in research. The next class, they used my example in a mocking way, stating that my cultural customs wasn't nearly "enough" when it came to research. The whole class erupted in laughter.
I had important cultural obligations (ceremony) that resulted in me needing to be excused from a class where we (potentially) had to do a peer review. (3 reviews in total for this assignment- they didn't assign our reviews yet at this time). I explained my cultural obligation and asked that I be excused from this upcoming class and assigned peers to review next class.
My professor was very passive aggressive in their response- stating they would "think about it" and let me know. (I have never had a problem getting accommodated when it comes to my culture). I told them the importance of me attending these responsibilities and how it would impact me if I were to be docked marks. I also said I might have to chat with the dean if I'm not accommodated for a ceremonial responsibility. They ultimately said that I have been assigned to peer review on the class i needed to be excused from, and i am encourage to "exercise my rights as a student" (talk to the dean?)
I showed up to class without telling my professor, skipping out on my ceremonial duties. I did my peer review they assigned to me.
At the end of class, my professor announced that today, upon "much reflection", they decided to change our peer reviews from 3 to 1. Basically- if i missed today because of my culture, I would've received a zero on this assignment because my professor decided my cultural responsibilities weren't enough to simply switch my review day.
All this tells me is that my professor "thought about" my request to review my 3 peers next class, then decided that they will not do that, and in fact they will assign me to review on the one day I cannot come to class, and furthermore change the assignment rubric and make it so that we will ONLY be graded on the one class I had to miss. Is it just me, or does this sound calculated?
I feel like this professor has caused me a lot of distrust and humiliation. Idk who to talk to about this behaviour, I have never in my life felt bullied by a professor. I feel unsafe and targeted at this point. Advice?
edit: I must also include that I have a friend in the class that is the same ethnic background as me and was attending the same ceremony, asked for a 12 hour extension on an assignment because they were busy with ceremony, and the professor said no. They will dock my friend 20% if it was handed in late.
I am looking for opinions of a student on what kind of changes they expect from current VP campus life or in future. What should an ideal campus look like according to you??
Can anyone in class today please let me know what he covered! Also, any tips for the midterm? Did he mention if he was going to post a review?
Has anyone taken psyo 220 with Nicoladis? The course load is very heavy so far and was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to navigate this class best as possible.
Anyone in this online class confused by the lectures? I’ve noticed his lectures do not cover the content he assigns for text readings (usually covering content we haven’t read yet), or sometimes doesn’t even cover an entire chapter section. But then we are only tested on the textbook and not lectures…
Would love any suggestions or advice for studying. Thank you!!
I failed APSC 180, and i’m planning to study civil engineering or electrical engineering, so I’m looking into whether this course is required for those programs. I failed
hi all, i am a second year psych student and really struggling with 271. i just don’t know how to approach this class and math is something i am poor at. I could really use some help, any advice?
Does anyone know how to check on workday if an elective course will be counted towards my degree? I can't find the same 'what if' degree planning option that ssc used to have.
I’ve been having internet connection issues at VEDA. It says that I am connected to the wifi but there’s no internet. Is anyone else having this problem?
In light of the recent AGM and the situation regarding the unfair handling of the reconsidering of resolutions 1 & 8 (if you aren't familiar with what happened check out the post about suo two days ago), I think a lot of us agree that the SUO needs reforms, badly. So, perhaps we could list our concerns and desired reforms here to see what other students are thinking and discuss what changes we should push for as a collective.
Here's to the hope that someone will listen and run in the next election with a platform prioritising these changes
I really want to go to UBCO but I don't see much about their Mechatronics courses, or program. Can someone please educate me on their experience with the program, and how employable it makes you (Maybe even compared to SFU and BCIT, if you by chance have an estimate)? I have the option to take BCIT Mechatronics (2 Year diploma, much cheaper, very employable I've heard) and SFU Mechatronics (Unknown, I'll be inquiring in the SFU Subreddit). Thanks!
whats up ubco fam? imma dumbass and didn't know if we are allowed cheat sheet for palaks goyal phys 122 class. Any advice is appreciated.
Hi! I'm having a hard time deciding if I should stay at mac for my second year (going into pnb) or transfer to ubc psychology (they only offer Bsc at their okanagan campus). There's a lot of reason why i'm considering this transfer..
But like a few things are stopping me..
Help a girl out! I need advice!
I just ate Pizza at Pritchard dinning hall and have a massive migraine and stomach ache, does anyone else have the same experience?
Hi, does anyone know where to get jobs on campus? I know the question sounds silly but I can't seem to find job openings/positins for anything.
Hello everybody!
Deciding between SFU and UBCO engineering, haven't decided on a specific type but they are also very very interesting to me. Which engineering is the most employable? Pay is a consideration as well but not as much as employability. I'm favoring UBCO over SFU but I am just wondering if anyone can provide personal experiences with the program or life at UBCO in general to help fuel my biased towards wanting to go to UBCO haha. Thanks!
Considering taking GEOG 128 over the summer with Catherine Kyle. I've already taken 129 with her and had a nice experience.
How similar is 128 over the summer compared to 129 in a regular term?
Just wondering how do y’all use your tv? I don’t know what to do with it and I tried connecting my usb with movies to play it but when I go to I put and usb it is in photos mode and i’m unable to change it to video mode so I cannot play anything other than watch jpeg files on it…does anybody know how to fix it or what do you guys use? Chromecast or what because it’s an old tv?
How intense is it compared to it during a regular term? How much time does it require outside class? Any idea who might be teaching it this summer term?
As title says too many packets not enough face to face
I wanna know if other students have had an odd, or off-putting, experience w Quail Ridge Dental? I feel like I got scammed… they said I had a bunch of cavities and that I needed a custom mouth guard for sleep (waaaay past $1000 of work). I got one of the “big cavities” fixed and now experience insane sensitivity in that tooth… I decided to stop going there and they keep spamming my phone, which seems uncharacteristic of a dental office.
Idk if I’m just thinking into this too much… but when me and another student had appointments simultaneously, they gave her the EXACT SAME diagnosis that I got?! It seems too insane to chalk it up to coincidence.
Anyways, I hope I’m not crazy lol.
just heard from the alliance for student empowerment that two policies penned by them (allowing students to observe board and committee meetings, and allowing students to review businesses in the UNC at that the suo does business with at the agm) were “reopened” at part two of the meeting and voted against because of the low attendance as the petition had already been discussed, despite initially passing with an overwhelming majority. the suo also did little to advertise this part of the agm. shady, dishonest stuff

at this point, we need someone to run who will stand up for equality and fairness in the suo and not let things like this slide.
do better suo
edit: please see the explanation of the situation in the comments by u/LixOs and why this was an illegal move
Has anyone been able to get question 5 correct? (Assignment 3).
hi! as the title says pretty much. there's a lot of heavy content and i was just wondering if anyone has any tips on how to get through this course
Hi all!! I have a question for people who have taken WRLD 310 with Dr. Peña. What are your study tips for his midterms?? I would really appreciate this as I have never taken this sort of class before and I would love some help! Thank you.
Since summer courses are mostly out in the workday, I’m considering taking ENGL 112 online. I was wondering if the final exam for this course is also conducted online for students who took it online in previous semesters. and how could I see these details
I’ve heard BCIT engineering is top tier, and it really isn’t that expensive for me.
UBCO on the other hand is about triple the price, but provides much better campus life and clubs and looked really appealing compared to quality of life at BCIT. Is UBCO good for engineering? I just don’t want to be stuck with a bunch of theoretical knowledge and have trouble finding a job after graduation, that’s my biggest fear. Thanks!
is this an easy elective? i see that it is one of the only courses offered online in the summer and i might consider taking it. i know its probably not super hard as it is a first year course, but for the people who have taken it - is it course heavy?
