Let's talk about turntables.
Step One: Post pics of your deck and add a few words about the features, how you ended up with it, who it might be appropriate for, and what you like about it!
Ask questions, share images, opinions, reviews, experiences, wisdom and anything else that is mildly turntable related.

Fluance RT82 gives a little shudder when powered on, is this normal for these tables or indicative of a possible issue? Anyone else with a Fluance experienced it? None of my previous turntables have done this. No apparent playback problems
Hi, the turntable is an Aiwa LX-100, a linear tracking turntable, part of a bundled system but capable of working on its own. It belonged to my grandpa. It was stored in its original box but stayed for years in a shed outside, so it experienced all kinds of temperatures and humidity.
It powers up fine, and the arm movement works correctly in both manual and automatic modes. The eject mechanism doesn't work, but I don’t mind that.
I tried it both with its bundled amplifier and with another one (the Tensai in the photo), and the problem is the same: the audio is coming only from the left channel.
The right channel is not completely dead. In fact, if I set the balance on the amplifier all the way to the right and increase the volume, I can hear the audio, but it’s very faint.
While playing, I’ve noticed a strange sound coming from the disc, like a light cracking noise. It’s nothing serious, but still noticeable. I suspect the needle or something else is misaligned, and the arm is too low, causing the cartridge to touch the vinyl and "crack" as it contacts the grooves.
I’ve taken some photos and made a video to show the situation. In the video, I muted the music to let you hear the noise it’s very low but audible.
Any help or advice is appreciated. Thank you!
I thought it would be easy because i thought "its just a box with a needle placed on a vynl it doesnt need to be anything special" but i looked into it and i dont know where to start. If someone could please guide me i'll be forever grateful.(my max budget is £90-100)
Hey there folks. I am looking at buying a new turntable to upgrade from my rubbish briefcase one. I found this Fenton rp162 and was wondering if anyone had any past experience with this turntable or whether it is a good budget option.
My cat often jumps on the table where my record player is and sometimes when he jumps on it while my records are playing, vibrations and moving the table make the vinyl skip, can that damage the needle? Also he managed to jump on my record player while record was playing and obviously record started skipping a lot cuz he was on it,can thst damage the record?
Recently inherited a Technics SL-B2 that has been collecting dust in a garage for several years, and I’m tasked with getting it up and running. I am very new to vintage audio and turntables in general. I took the platter off and the old belt has decayed onto the platter. I know I do need a new belt. I was able to get some off with alcohol and Goo Gone but most of it looks like the picture shown. My noob question: is this even an issue? If so, should I just scrap it and find a replacement platter or is there an easy way to get off this crap?
Hi all looking to upgrade my setup but don’t know where to start.
Currently running a project debut carbon evo(no upgrades) > project phono box e > Cambridge audio a1 > mission 760i (although my grandad has some KEF q350s I can hopefully have soon)
I was thinking about potentially getting an acrylic platter but don’t know if this money is better spent elsewhere.
Thanks.
I’m excited to hear what yall think of my humble set up.
I started piecing this up 6 months ago. Finally got it to where it’s at just a couple months ago and I love it so far.
I scored this old media/music cabinet from a friend. It was totally empty, but had nasty ripped up cloth covering the doors. I replaced it with the rattan which probably isn’t great for sound, but is aesthetically pleasing to the wife.
Next, I picked up this Technics SLBD20D from a neighbor for 70 bucks. Then, an old Denon class AB amp for 50 bucks on OfferUp.
I ended up splurging on my speakers. I placed them on foam pads and stuffed PSB Alpha P5’s (tight fit) behind the doors. Bought new for around 300.
Finally, I picked up a Sony 8” sub on OfferUp for 40 bucks.
Some problems I’ve had are a squeaky turntable which I remedied with a drop of gear oil on the belt drive motor. A buzzing from the sub that was always on even if the sub was shut off. I fixed that by splicing in a 3 amp switch in the power cord. I can now turn it off without unplugging it.
Also, my amp gets pretty warm, although it hasn’t really been an issue.
I’d like to upgrade to a Fluance RT83(or above) and a better (more modern) amp. Maybe a class D?? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Very excited of this hobby!
I got a new Project Evo carbon and set it up as per instruction. Every 5 or 10 minutes or so the track gets stuck and loops on just one part. What am I missing.
Brand new vinyl with no scratches and also counter weight aligned as per manual
Would appreciate experiences of some pros here
Hey there! I have been trying to connect the LX310BT to my Philips speaker system via Bluetooth and it has been a real headache. The Sony turntable already is pretty finicky with its Bluetooth connectivity, but after many attempts it has finally connected to the speakers. The speakers chime as if connected, but then on the Philips display it reads ‘No BT’. No sound goes through and no other devices are connected to the speaker. Does anyone have any tips or tricks to help out the process?
Is there a cartridge that can be fitted to replace the VL 42G with an elliptical stylus ?
Or is a stylus change my only option...
thanks.
It’s only a little slow.
The sound is very obvious in the video(scratchy, loud, bass blown out) it skips on its own without any big stomping or vibration The signal isn’t double boosted I tried a new needle ,changed nothing New gold plated RCA cable, changed nothing maybe I need a needle alignment?
anyone out there smarter than me that knows whats wrong? thx!
I’m thinking of buying one next year, what do you guys think of it?
Howdy mates.
I am searching for a new turntable (preferably less than $400) that has an anti-shake device, and at least one of these two additional features:
Something that allows both sides disc to be played in sequence without having to flip the record over manually.
A tonearm that can automatically position itself in the correct spot (near the very edge before the first track) when you want to play a record.
If there does not exist a turntable with either of those features within my price range (less than $400), please let me know respectfully and politely. No need to patronize me on how ignorant I am about vinyl and record players.
Thank you for taking the time to read this post and in advance for offering your recommendations.
Hey I was hoping for some recommendations for turn tables for my family for Christmas. Bluetooth capabilities are a plus. The current audio set up is Yamaha RX-v1700 AV Receiver and polk audio speakers (see attached pictures), I was hoping to find something that fits into this.
PS: I work in music/audio and I understand the desire to recommend a much more expensive turn table because it has better audio quality or will last longer, etc and I do appreciate the advice, but $400 is my current budget!
Hi everyone!
I’m a graduate student specializing in HCI and UX, and I’m conducting a short survey about the experiences of online vinyl and vintage media sellers. Your responses will remain confidential, and the insights will help support and improve the online selling community. It only takes a few minutes, and I’d greatly appreciate your input! Here’s the link: https://forms.gle/G7N56snRPCd46uaJ8. Thank you for helping preserve and share vintage media! Note: I am not affiliated with any brands, marketing, or advertising, this is purely academic.
Additionally, if anyone is interested in the information I gather, I would gladly share and discuss my results.
Hi everyone,
I’m new to the vinyl world and just got my first turntable (SL-Q2) along with a few cool records. Wanting to take proper care of them, I bought a Spincare cleaning bundle to keep my records in good shape.
However, I made a mistake—I underestimated the importance of thoroughly rinsing the vinyl after cleaning. As a result, some of my records sounded bad by listening to them right after. Thankfully, I’ve realized my error, and this won’t happen again moving forward.
My only concern is: could I have permanently damaged my records by listening to them or putting them back in their sleeves before they were fully rinsed?
Thanks for your advice!
Just got my second turntable for my room and was wondering whether or not there is a way to lock the counterweight in place to stop it for rotating once it’s set. There’s no obvious way to do this so I’m also wondering if there’s a good DIY way to prevent it from moving.
Hello,
I recently purchased a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evo, and now I need advice on preamps. My plan is to get the turntable working first and then gradually upgrade the preamp and speakers. Currently, I have Edifier R1850DB speakers, but I am still missing a preamp.
On Friday, I purchased the Pro-Ject Phono Box E BT5, but I think it might have been a poor decision. I couldn’t find any decent reviews of this product. The only information I came across mentions that connecting via Bluetooth can be difficult and that it makes a strange noise when powered on.
I looked into available pre-amps and these are my options:
Or return it and get:
Art USB Phono Plus - 95 eur
ART Precision Phono Preamp - 98Eur
iFi Audio Zen Air Phono - 99Eur
Pro-Ject Phono Box E - 79Eur
Or I should invest more and got for Cambridge ALVA SOLO, Rega FONO MM (MK5) or pro-ject Phono Box S2? All of them are ~200euros.
Thanks.
I’ve never owned a record player but I purchased my first vinyl several days ago. I don’t want a “start up” one like those suitcase players and I’m not super into it that I would invest in the really expensive ones. So I found two that kept popping up when I was doing some research.
Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB-BZ Direct-Drive Turntable (Analog & USB), Fully Manual, Hi-Fi, 3 Speed, Convert Vinyl to Digital, Anti-Skate and Variable Pitch Control
Denon DP-300F Fully Automatic Turntable
I bought a tracking force scale on Amazon during Black Friday. I'm glad I did because I checked my turn table's tracking force. It came out to around 2.3 grams. Per Audio Technica's site, tracking force should be 1.8 to 2.2 grams. I'm debating whether or not calling customer service to get a repair or replacement. What do you guys think? This is my first turntable ever.
Hi! I have a Technics SL-Q202 turntable with a AT-VM95ML catridge and a Denon PMA-655R.
Recently I had bought a Vevor ultrasonic cleaner to clean my records with. Some records look NM after cleaning but i can still hear a lot of annoying surface noise. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
I think the Phono input of my Denon amp can be the culprit of exagerate that surface noise.
Also I have a Temu (yes temu) acrylic mat, which i do not know if is any good, but i can hear the turntable motor.
Can somebody help me on what I am doing wrong or what could be the source of the problem?
Hello! I am the owner of my dad’s former turntable, and am a total derp with electricity and compatability. I’m hoping someone might help me identify specific budget-friendly recommendations for my Pioneer PL-518.
Currently have:
Pioneer PL-518. AC 120V, 50/60 Hz, 7 W.
pre amp: Pyle mini phono pre amp PP444 (should I get a different one?)
need Amp
need speakers, and was eyeballing a pair of Technics SB-S25.
Thank you for all the advice and help to get this gal spinning some records the right way!
To start this post, I don't really know anything about record players besides that they records.
Today has been a very hectic day. I bought this second hand record player from some old man. It's a Sony PS-XL22B vinyl player. I've got it connected to a extern receiver which is the Sony STR-DE215 reciever. When I connected I saw my needle was bouching of the record I texted which prob means my record is broken.
Sad:(
After trying a new record it didn't bounce so after turning on my speakers, I didn't hear the music. So after trying different things I heard to gave a distorted sound. After doing some research i found out it probably has a broken the needle. See the pic.
Should I be able to readjust my needle or do I need to buy another one?
Thanks in advance.
