renting in johnson city

i just got accepted into etsu for fall 25. i’ve heard from many, many people that it can be impossible to find apartments to rent up there. i really don’t want a dorm and i’m not opposed to living 10 or 15 minutes away from campus — even 20 if i need to.

what would be my best bet with finding housing? when should i start looking, are there any places i should avoid, etc.? i know y’all get a lot of questions on this already but i’d really appreciate some advice 🙏🏻

How to Help with Cleanup - Equipment

Hey! Maybe someone could put a link to how to get in contact with someone regarding cleanup? We are from middle tn, have previously lived in JC. We have equipment (excavator, tractors, chainsaws, skid steers etc) and want to come up and donate time and resources to help with large debris removal.

Culinary student and line cook here, is there a need for meal prep? How’s everyone’s food holding up?

Hi Tri Cities - I’m a native east TN girlie who is a culinary student and line cook at a restaurant. I’m currently on fall break and have taken some time away from work. How is everyone’s meal supplies holding up? Especially in those smaller towns? Would meal preps be something that could be of use in this time? I’m not a big strapping lumberjack who can go in and save people from buildings, but I want to contribute where I can. These people deserve good food. Where exactly could I go to distribute?

Possible to get to Asheville AVL airport?

Coming from Kingsport, supposed to fly out of AVL mid October. Google maps makes it look like you can detour around i26 in Erwin but I'm seeing NCdot say travel is prohibited near Asheville.

Can you get from Erwin to Spartanburg on I-26

I know the interstate bridge is down in Erwin, but it you go around that, can you get to Asheville and then on to Spartanburg via I-26?

I've heard some say you can, and some say you can't. Just wondering if anybody knows for sure.

If your area is on a water boil, PLEASE be cautious of your drink at any restaurant or fast food chain.

I work in the restaurant industry here in TRI. My store is using only canned sodas and bottled water for our customer’s safety.

Many restaurants and fast food chains are still using water that is contaminated and ignoring the water boil. Teas and fountain drinks are being mixed by using local tap water. They are NOT boiled before hand. The water filtration systems at these businesses are minimal and can go years without updating and replacing.

I have had several friends already become sick because they drank water, soda, or tea from local restaurants. Call ahead and confirm if they are using canned soda, bottled water, or premade tea from a store.

This goes for ice as well! Ice machines make ice on site from local water.

Please stay safe when consuming liquids. The water boil is there for a reason, to prevent you from becoming ill.

EDIT: this is ONLY for areas with a water boil warning!!! Please research if you are or you are not in a zone with a current water boil alert! A kind reddit user has posted links in the comments that has this information available. PLEASE comment below if your area is a known water boil alert. -Kingsport -Elizabethton -Erwin -Unicoi -Greeneville -Memorial drive -Indian Springs -Fall creek

Verizon or Spectrum cell service?

I’m currently on someone’s Verizon plan but signed up for Spectrum cell service before the hurricane hit. I never physically switched my phone over and I’m wary to do it now in case it takes what unreliable and intermittent Verizon service I have and makes it worse. Can anyone advise on how Spectrum is doing as far as reception? I do delivery service work and since my connection/navigation apps aren’t reliable I’ve not been able to work as safely. Thanks for any info!

Furniture donations

I have am moving next week and have a few pieces of furniture that I was not planning to take with me. I was originally going to see what Good Samaritan would take and just set the rest out by the curb but if there is someone that just lost everything in the flood maybe they could use some free pieces.

Would anyone know of a group I could call?

Currently looking for a singer for project band!

Hey guys, I'm a JC resident and I'm looking for anyone interested to be lead singer for a project me and some other musicians are working on. Currently we have a rhythm guitar, lead guitar, bassist, (and potentially drummer?) but we need a vocalist. We are all experienced and have done several shows for local places around the tricities. The project is looking to be a pop / punk rock band with emphasis on heavier tones and instrumentals with clean vocals. An example of other bands we'd like to take inspiration from would be would be Paramore, Evanescence, Type O Negative, Coheed and Cambria, and more! creativity is encouraged! Shoot me a message here or DMS and l'll get you in contact with the rest of the band! 👍👍

Route assistance please

My mother in law is a resident of The Center on Health and Aging on Mohawk drive in Erwin. We normally take the Jackson Love exit when we travel from Johnson City to visit. We got a call this morning saying that she has fallen ill. Seems like a cold, but we need to go see her for our own peace of mind. Is there a viable route?
