New NS heritage unit

Sorry for the crappy pic, it's still pretty deep inside Juniata. I'm sure a lot more pictures will be posted with the event on Wednesday.

Purpose of UP Weed Sprayer train's last car

Hello,

question is about this >> https://www.flickr.com/photos/genericrailfan/52088656851 << car.

What's the purpose of it? Is it a "cab car" (to operate the train in reverse)?

And was added later to the newly build weed sprayer train consist?

€dit: The control-stand railcar with windows all around has rear-facing horns and headlights. so it was already able to make back-up moves with headlights and horns. So, why add an addional railcar?

What's the purpose of the rotatable (?) platform and ramp?
Where was this car used before? Part of another MoW train set or purpose-build for weed sprayer?
Car number is "UP 980359", pictures can only be found with weed sprayer train

Youtube Video of weed sprayer train from 2021: >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWj9vOqtpUE << without "cab car"
Youtube Video from 2024: >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qu0_T93-APM << with "cab car"

Brakes for tabletop controls

With freight locomotives that have tabletop controls(such as some dash-9s), how do the brakes work? I've been told pushing the Auto brake applies(and haven't confirmed) bit how does the independent work?

Am I the only one to think that the Siemens Chargers are the Airbus A350 of American Passenger Locomotives?

If the Siemens Chargers were a plane, I think the plane that I can compare the Siemens Chargers to the most is the Airbus A350, because they are both ULTRA-MODERN and EFFICIENT vehicles manufactured by a European company, but in service with American Transportation Companies like Amtrak and Delta Airlines.

Just found this fascinating video on 'Nadal ratio' - ie the ratio of lateral force to weight required to bring-on a derailment …

… & how - possibly counter-intuitively (but some folk might say it actually fits their intuition, IDK, can't speak for others) - the ratio is actually less the higher the coefficient of friction between wheel & rail.

There's a convenient way of re-expressing that formula, which isn't mentioned in the video: the formula has the 'shape of' the tangent of difference of angles formula … so if we express the coefficient of friction as being itself the tangent of an angle ^§ , say η , so that μ=tanη , or η=arctanμ , then the formula becomes

L/V = tan(θ-η) .

And η has a maximum of 45° , corresponding to μ=1 .

§ Coefficient of friction kindof is a tangent of an angle, anyway : it's the angle @ which a surface must be tipped for a block resting on it with that coefficient of friction to start sliding.

P42 198 departs out of Solana Beach CA while rescuing charger 2116

P42 towed 2116 for the remainder of the day after 2116 had a power outage at the same exact station just after departing (I was on the train), luckily they were able to start 2116 up again though. Once at Los Angeles, 198 was waiting and coupled up to the nose of 2116 and ran with 2116 for the rest of the day before being taken off the nose.
