Hi and happy(?) Monday!
I've spent my entire professional life in the videography/photography world (in both the corporate and freelance realms), but the most activated and energized I've been on a job has been trying my hand at hosting and planning karaoke nights at a local bar. Everything about it is activating: I use my existing skill set to do marketing videos/posters, I've done public outreach for fundraising, and for the event itself I decorate/light, control the audio levels, and host. Proud to say I've thrived more each time and it's a heck of a lot more fun for me to multitask in a fast-paced social scenario than being alone in front of my video editing software for hours and hours.
What I would love to learn from any of you is any advice as to how to grow in this field, not just karaoke nights but beyond into community event planning/hosting. I accept that there's a lot I don't know and I would work under an expert's wing to get the requisite experience, and I'd also be down for taking any classes or certification courses.
If I could choose one area that most stimulates me, it's the lighting component. I love giving a space a brand new identity through creative lighting and it's also a bridge that connects to my experience behind the camera.
I'm posting to this reddit specifically because I'm Toronto-based and looking for insight how to grow within the city, which has its own unique personality while being so fabulously event-centric.
I would be grateful for any guidance and words of wisdom!

If you love philosophy or simply just talking (or listening) with others about ideas big and small, you will love the events during our week-long philosophy festival in Toronto. Throughout the festival week (November 19th-23rd), we will be holding evening workshops on a range of different topics, including those that cut to the heart of what public philosophy is aboutādialogue.Ā
Dialogue is a powerful tool for understanding the world. When we engage in dialogue, our interlocutors can offer us important clarifications, objections, or simply different perspectives that can expand or enrich our own. Indeed, we believe that through conversation with others, we can live more intentional, connected, and meaningful lives. Without further ado, here are all of the exciting events we have planned for you:
Throughout the festival week, we've had seminars and workshops on different methods of inquiry, dialogue, and their practical application. On the final evening of the festival, we come together to celebrate World Philosophy Day, collaborative exploration, and a year of the Being and Becoming community. Whether you've attended our events before, or just learning about us now, welcome to a community that sparks and satisfies your curiosity.
__________________________________________________________________________
This event is brought to you byĀ Being and Becoming, a Toronto based non-profit. We aim to create community around exploring everyday concepts and experiences so that we may live more intentional, thoughtful, and meaningful lives. We use philosophy as a tool with which we can come to a richer understanding of the world around us.
By offering activities, spaces, and other opportunities for conversation and co-exploration, we hope to enable the meeting and fusion of individuals and their ideas. Everyone is welcome, regardless of background: indeed, we believe the journey is best undertaken alongside explorers from a variety of disciplines, cultures, backgrounds, and experiences.
Find out more about Being and BecomingĀ here.
About the Curiosity CafƩ Series:
For those of you who havenāt had the opportunity to join us at our Curiosity CafĆ©s and are wondering what theyāre all about: every two weeks, we invite members of our community to come out to the Madison Avenue Pub to engage in a collaborative exploration of our chosen topic. Through these events, we aim to build our community of people who like to think deeply about lifeās big questions, and provide each other with some philosophical tools to dig deeper into whatever it is we are most curious about.
As we gear up for the holiday season, Toronto still has a few tricks up its sleeve with the Eras Tour, Reel Asian Film Festival and Toronto Fashion Week. Our event suggestions:
Plus we've got a list of Taylor Swift events to help celebrate the Era's tour.
Check out the full list of Best Bets this week here!
