A place for tone seekers to discuss tube amps and analog goodies. Vintage or new, boutique or not, let's talk about the sweet tone makers.
Welcome to r/ToobAmps - A place to discuss that sweet tube tone. Whether you're a toob noob or Leo Fender reincarnated, you're welcome here.
Tubes amps make use of very high voltages! These voltages can kill you dead. If you decide, whether suggested to you here or not, to open your amp and tinker with it, PLEASE BE CAREFUL, and learn how to do so safely. Even an unplugged tube amp can retain enough juice in the capacitors to give you a very, very bad day.
Please read the Tube Amp Safety documentation.

Hello everyone, I would like to ask for any advice about my Fender hot rod deluxe iii (40W), which has practically zero clean headroom. When I put it to rehearsal volume (at drums level), it sounds as if there was distortion pedal plugged in the chain, but I go straight from guitar to amp. I tried different guitars, different cables, speakers even, nothing helps. I bought the amp second hand, the previous owner didn't play it much and does not know any history about mods etc. I took it to two amp techs already but no issue was found electronics wise, tubes replaced, however there is still no clean headroom. Anyone got any ideas what could be wrong? Sorry if the description is vague, I'll try to describe it further if necessary. Thanks in advance for any ideas.
I seemed to have stumbled upon a unique amp, does anyone know anything about these? Price rarity, etc.
So I bought a used Dynaco st-70 and I was hoping to get some help troubleshooting. I tried to set the bias to 1.56v but both channels max out at 0.81/0.84v (after letting it warm up, etc...). It looks like it's been recapped and the quad cap has been replaced as well. Everything else looks to be original. I tried out a new rectifier tube which had similar voltage readings as the old. Do I just need to replace the output tubes? Any other simple voltages readings I can take/comprehensive testing guides I can look at?
I have a Blues Pearl Bluesmaster amp (3x10 inch Fender Reverb style amp).
I want to connect It to my Fryette Power Station 100 to attenuate it.
The speaker cable on the amp has a non-standard male plug that is larger than 1/4”. Are there female/female adapters available that are 1/4” on one end and about 8.4 mm on the other end?
My adapter works fine for my Bassman style amp, which has a standard 1/4” male plug.
Thanks in advance for your time and help!
Hi, my Mk2b blows comes on with a new fuse ansmd plays fine for along as I want until I turn it off. The second or 3rd time I turn it on again it blows the fuse. During this time a main valve turned white in the glass, I have replaced this but still the same problem. Could it be the valve base? Any help greatly appreciated.
I found a local listing for a 1963 Gibson GA-19RVT and was unsure if it was worth picking up or not. The seller wants $500 for it. It’s been converted to a 3 prong cord, has had the speaker switched to a Celestion Greenback, and has had the tubes replaced with Gold Lions. It’s missing the Gibson logo piece on the speaker grill and I don’t think the seller has the original speaker. The seller does say that it works and is willing to let me audition it.
I have wanted a Gibson tube amp for a while now but I also don’t want to buy one that won’t hold its value. I’m trying to become more selective on gear I pickup as I’m more of a recreational player and not a true musician.
Is $500 too much for this amp or fair?
A while back I was allowed to salvage an old (50's-60's) corporate office projection room.
I found this Devry 16mm Projector amp. I can't find any information on it but...so beautiful, it can't be scrap.
Any help identifying, finding schematics would be greatly appreciated
Thanks!
Hi, I was wondering what qd written on the westinghouse 6l6gc qd tube and box means. The box is black and gold and it is written hamilton canada. Could Qd means quad? thanks.
Hi, I have 4 old 6l6gc Qd westinghouse canada tubes and was wondering what QD means and if there is some value in them, tried to post pictures but they seam to be deleted and not appearing. The box is black and gold, i believe they could be from 50-60s. thanks
Say you have an amp like a Marshall DSL 100 with a B+ of around 470v. Theoretically screen voltage is just a few volts lower than plate so let’s say 465v at the screens. Most current EL34 tube spec sheets claim a max. screen voltage tolerance of 450v. Some say 400.
For people who know more about this than I do, does this simply mean the amp in my example will just cook through output tubes very quickly? Why would Marshall design an amp to be so hard on screen grids during a time when tube quality was extremely awful? (Mid 90s).
I’m a bedroom guitarist, been playing 25 years and have been chasing tube amp tone on solid states like an idiot. I’m giving up and getting a real amp with tubes. Here’s my criteria: I need a good clean Stratocaster tone but also good high gain metal tones. Built in reverb is necessary as I really don’t like using pedals. I also need a built in power soak/attenuator. I live in a small place, space is an issue so I’m going for a 1x12 and a head that’ll fit on top or a 1x12 combo would be fine too. Again not looking for a solid state amp. Budget is under $700 usd, the used market is my focus. I’m having a really tough time finding this so any help is greatly appreciated. Also feel free to comment on all time favorite amps. If you have your dream tone dialed into your rig, I’d love to hear about it. Happy shredding. 🎸🎸🎸
I have an opportunity for a really good deal on a Laney Ironheart IRT30 combo amp and would love to get your opinions on it. I’m especially curious about differentiators between that amp and the Marshall DSL40CR combo that I already own.
I’m mainly into punk/hard rock, so I’d love to hear your thoughts on how these two amps compare when it comes to higher gain tones. I prefer tighter sounds, especially when palm muting.
The Marshall is great, but I’m not sure if it’s hitting the spot exactly for me when it comes to those tight higher-gain tones. What do you all think about the Laney in comparison? Would it better scratch that itch, especially if I’m able to get it for a good deal?
