So I'm preparing for a trip to Tokyo. I am, as is typical, over researching things. I've always wanted to go to an Onsen. I see that there are some hotels in Tokyo that have them. Per my research the nicest one, Yuen Bettei Daita, is totally booked during my visit so I can't book a room there. I've seen posts mention staying at APA hotels, who seem too have Onsens, but the reviews of the hotel and spa experience seem mediocre. My trip is planned for the spring.
I do generally enjoy going to spas in the states but is it worth staying at a hotel that has one? Is it nicer than say a nice spa at top hotel in the states? Any feedback would be appreciated.
I was wondering if people have come across any good restaurants serving Latin/Carribean Food? I know authentic is a stretch, but I'm willing to check out acceptable. Thank you
Hi everyone - my partner and I are looking to go to Tokyo for two-ish weeks in end of October/November.
We want to spend roughly a week each (split up by a ryokan in izu) in Kichijoji and Koenji because it sounds like they are cool, trendy areas for late 20s.
It seems when I’m looking there isn’t much accomodation at all. I was just wondering whether it’s because it would all be booked already, whether there just isn’t a lot of options in those areas or whether there are nearby areas we should be looking instead (eg for Koenji a lot of places in Nakano and suginami are coming up). Or whether there is a Japanese version of airbnb/booking.com we should be searching on?
Alternatively if you have any red hot accomodation suggestions in those areas please let us know too :-)
Hey all, wondering if anyone attends the Tokyo car meets or is a part of the culture? Would love to ride along with someone and see the car culture here?
Hi,
We're traveling to Tokyo next January and are looking for hotel recs.
It's a special occasion, so budget is not the primary thing. We want an amazing experience, high-end accommodation but also want it to have a Japanese vibe, not just be a big international brand hotel like the InterContinental.
We're looking for 4 nights in Tokyo and One night in Fujikawaguchiko
We LOVE the look of the HOSHINOYA hotels in both places, but both seem closed for maintenance on our dates! Something similar would be great.
Currently on the list is the Aman Tokyo and The Edition in Ginza.
Thanks in advance.
Hi, I'm gonna be in Tokyo with my mom in march for 4 nights and we dont know yet where to stay. We've never been there before and our priorities are food and historical/cultural sights :) We’re not big on shopping or nightlife. From our research, staying near Asakusa or Ueno Station seems convenient for us, what do you think? Any better suggestions or tips? :)
o Basically I'll be travelling to Japan this summers for my 1.5 month internship. I am 19 YO right now and I keep a big handlebar moustache and kinda tall ( 1.88m). Facially and physically I kinda look too masculine/big for my age . Is this a problem in Japan? I'll be interning at university of Tokyo and I am further looking forward to having some dates in Japan. Will there be any problem?
Hi all- I have an urgent and strange request. I am currently staying at The B Hotel in Shimbashi. I am flying out to go back to America tomorrow evening. The housekeepers bundled up my favorite stuffed animal that my now Fiancé (proposed on this trip) got me 6 years ago, and sent it off to the laundry factory. They do not know if they will be able to get it back to me in time before i leave tomorrow afternoon.
I will pay whatever necessary if someone can go to the hotel and pick him up and ship him back to me. If anyone is going to be here for an extended amount of time in the Tokyo area, Minato/Ginza, I will pay you and the shipping fees if you can help me. Pls let me know if this is something that can be done
Lost citalopram in Japan
Hi, I have lost a packet of my citalopram whilst travelling in Japan and I have 2 days of tablets left to cover the next 8 days.
I went to a pharmacy and found out citalopram is not available in Japan but escitalopram is. I have been on escitalopram in the past but it stopped working for me. I am worried about withdrawals and a sudden drop with my depression.
It is the weekend now so I will speak to a doctor on Monday.
What should I do? Any help or guidance appreciated
I was looking at booking flights to Tokyo on Zip for the end of October but after 10/25 they don’t show any flights it’s just X’ed out.
I tried to contact their chat and they only said what’s on the website is what’s available, and to check back for further dates, but didn’t know when that might happen.
I’ve never run into this situation when trying to book flights. Does anyone know if this is common? It’s only 8 months out, seems odd.
Hi everyone,
I'm an american travelling to Japan about a year from now. I have kind of a tradition I do with myself where I get a tattoo wherever I travel to. In the US, it is expected that you tip your artist after you are done with a tattoo in addition to the original cost. However, as I understand it, tipping etiquette is quite different in Japan and can even be considered rude. So my question is, should I plan on tipping my artist in Japan as well?
I would like to be as respectful as possible, so if anyone can help me answer this it would be greatly appreciated!
I have visited Japan a few times , Osaka , Kyoto , Aso, mainly I visited Kensai and western parts of Japan . It is my first time to Tokyo and Fuji Mountain. All the service staff that met from my past experience, from restaurants to convenience stores, wet markets, hotels….They , Japanese staff were all nice and wearing smile. However, I just arrive Tokyo for 2 days with my family. I’ve been experiencing a rude service in a restaurant and a car renting shop in Rude staff in Kawaguchiko/ Fuji mountain area . The male staff didn’t want to bother and care about my enquiry , mainly I felt because I’m a tourist and not speaking Japanese. He have even wanna to start a flight.
I understood there are tourist from all over the world . The supports from local Japanese and the huge amount of tourists may affect local life of Japanese .
Anyone have similar unpleasant experience from rude service in Tokyo or Japan!?
Hi all.
I’m looking to travel to Japan for my first time. I will be on a budget, so I think I will be staying in hostels, and I’m planning to allot about 2 weeks for the trip.
Does anybody have an itinerary from past trips they’d be willing to share? I have no idea where to start.
I’d love to see both the city and natural side of Japan. Open to any recommendations, even if it means extending my time there.
Thanks everyone
I've been searching Google but can't find a physical location in metro tokyo that sells them.
Hello, researching museums for a work trip in May when I will have a couple of days free time. Is love to visit a good museum that will give me an appreciation for the broad history of Japan. The Edo-Tokyo museum looks like it would fit the bill but unfortunately it's closed for another year- any other suggestions?
Thanks!
Hey everyone! This will be my first time in Tokyo, Japan, and I’d love some tips and tricks as an American traveler. I’m especially excited to go thrift shopping—does anyone know any lowkey spots where I can find cute vintage clothing???
What are the best places in Tokyo to buy plushies and anime goods second hand? I went to the Book off-stores in Ikebukuro and Shinjuku and loved them so much. Are there any more shops like these two?
Is there any massage place with Happy ending service in Japan. I live at Ikebukuro
Hello! Trying my luck as it seems like this hasn't been asked here before!
Basically the worst happened - I arrive in Tokyo, and my laptop chooses at this moment to have its battery cease functioning - long story short, it can no longer turn on without being plugged to a power source.
I need to be able to use it and will be living in Asakusa. Would you be able to recommend cafes with power plugs in the area?
Thank you so much.
Hey everyone, I am in Tokyo Shinjuku area and struggling to find a nice place which serves wagyu beef for one person. Most of the places I checked on internet they don’t really entertain one person. I would really appreciate if someone can share the name of the restaurants which entertain solo person. Cheers
I will be solo traveling to Tokyo from the 20th-26th of February 2025, and I need some friends to hangout with and hopefully we can help eachother to take pictures :) I'm 21F, English speaker from the USA! Planning to go to Puroland during this time and other cute places such as the Cherion cafe in Shinjuku, and would love if someone could join me! If you're interested in Sanrio, Nana, Paradise Kiss and cute clothing stores such as Liz Lisa or Baby, the Stars Shine Bright, then I am your gal! This will be my 2nd time in Tokyo so I am familiar with the public transport system and the tourist spots. My instagram is @kher1ine https://www.instagram.com/kher1ine?igsh=MThsdDV2c3Nwbm1zaQ%3D%3D&utm_source=qr just to verify I'm not a creep lol.
PLEASE NO JUDGEMENT - looking for serious answers only
Hello! We’re traveling to Tokyo and various other cities in Japan, with our 2.5 year old, for the first time and have many activities planned. Though I know Japan is generally a very kid friendly place, there’s some things we’d love to do while we’re there that may not be kid friendly.
Anyone have any experience with babysitting services in Japan? We’re a little hesitant, but we’re also coming from the US sooo I hope you can understand why we’re so hesitant haha.
Thanks!
Hello - hope you're all well.
Can you please let me know of kissatens (喫茶店) similar to Coffee House Max in Nishi-Shinjuku (マックス in 西新宿)? Specifically those with a cosy, relaxing atmosphere rather than the bustling, boisterous and fast pace ones.
I visited Coffee House Max twice during my initial visit to Tokyo in 2019, then once again in 2023. I loved its quiet, quaint atmosphere and its charming Showa-era fittings. It was a relaxing escape from the crowds, loud noises and long queues of Tokyo, even though it was just a 5-minute walk from Nishi-Shinjuku station. I think the atmosphere was helped by it being located in what seemed to be primarily a residential area.
So I was gutted to discover it had closed on 31 August 2024. What I didn't realise is that the shop had been operating since 1973, was originally a franchise (with the Nishi-Shinjuku shop being the original and last remaining) and had been featured in shows and documentaries. I was hoping to use my trip next week to personally give an omiyage to the owners as a thank you for their 51 years of dedicated service.
Tomorrow is SETSUBUN
I got it (bought it) The charm 'ichiyoraifuku' (return of spring) delivered in the Anahachiman-gu Shrine in Tokyo for economic fortune
I know about the hot springs but what are some other ways I can get pampered while I’m in Tokyo? Love a good massage and am looking for recommendations. But what are some other ways that I can get pampered? I heard getting a ear cleaning is interesting. LOL.
Hi all! Last week I got a beautiful red velvet bow on a hair clip in Hakodate but of course in travelling around I lost it. Any recommendations on to where I might find a similar item in Tokyo? Thanks!
Mostly looking for clothes, maybe olds dvds or toys, stuff you wouldn't normally find but doesn't cost a fortune because it's used? We're staying in Akihabara so anything in the area would be preferrable but any suggestions are welcome!
anyone know why most hotels near the Shibuya Scramble are full during April 18th to 20th? is there an event? the weekend before and after are available.
