Itinerary for January

Hello everyone!

My friend and I are planning to visit Tohoku this winter (one week in the beginning of January) and I would love to get insight on what not to miss.

A bit about us: two young women, not too big on mountain hiking but love beautiful nature scenery with lakes, waterfalls, and trees (and mountains in the background). We do love temples and castles but probably wouldn’t visit more than two or three. Would love to visit onsen but we have tattoos and not all of them are easily covered so we’re looking for tattoo/foreigners friendly onsens if there’re any. We’re also avid foodies and love to try local specialties - what are the must-try’s of Tohoku?

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Edit: we won’t have a car and plan to travel by train and/or bus.

Tsuruoka taxi question

Hello! I'll be visiting Tsuruoka for vacation, and staying in Tamonkan inn by Dewa Sanzan... I need to catch the first JR 5am train on October 25, and it looks like id have to request a taxi. Does anyone know if taxis are able to pick me up from my inn at around 4am to drop off at Tsuruoka station? Do taxis also take credit cards? Also am I able to use taxi apps such as Uber, Go, or Didi? Thank you.

Does anyone know this band from Morioka?

I caught their last 2 songs at the Jozenji Streetjazz fest in Sendai and I thought they were fantastic. The agenda lists them as Apollon from Morioka, but I can not for the life of me find any trace of their existence online. Does anyone know where I can find their music or schedule??

Tohoku or Kyushu

Hi everyone!

We are a couple traveling for the second time to to Japan late September\ early October for 13 days. Spending the first weekend in Tokyo.

We are torned between Tohoku or Kyushu region. We like bit cities, nightlife, nature, short hikes and great architecture when we travel. We will be renting a car to get to see the country side in both cases.

For experienced Japan travelers, which region is best to visit specially in late September\ early October.

Thank you!

Tohoku university JYPE

Hi! I'm a Korean who wants to apply for the JYPE program at Tohoku University. I'm planning to go to the spring semester as an exchange student. But I have to fill out the application form to apply for the program. I'm not sure what to write in this application form to pass. I'm going to emphasize the IRT course on what kind of topics I want to enter into and study. Will this content be of great help in passing? If you have any friends who have tried the JYPE program, please answer. I really like Japan and I'm sure this program will be powerful and grow for me. A lot of information from Tohoku University is welcome. :) !!

Tohoku University's English

Hello, I'm looking for some information about Tohoku University's FGL program. When I found out about it, I was pretty excited, but now I have a doubt: is the English level of the professors good? Because Japan is infamous for its low level in English and when I sent some emails asking for information about the courses, there were quite a few mistakes and misunderstandings. Could someone who has attended the University share their experience, please?

Any Filipino in Iwate?

I’m loving life in Iwate Prefecture, diving into outdoor fun like hiking, skiing, and beach outings. But here's the thing – I haven't crossed paths with any fellow Filipinos here. I'm all about breaking that streak!

If you're a Filipino around Iwate and you're up for joining me on these adventures, let's make it happen. Let's hike, ski, chill on the beach, and explore together. Just shoot me a message if you're interested

Special Research Project

I'm going to Sendai and other smaller towns in Miyagi and Iwate prefectures for a special research project this Spetember for a few days. I'm looking for people in these smaller towns to interview and meet, doesn't matter if they know english or not. The topic of the interview is mainly about local culture in light of the shrinking population (with emphasis of a decade after the tsunami). If anyone here knows someone, or can think of a strategy to reach people there, please let me know!

Areas in Tohoku that have a good chance of snow in Mid-December?

The trip I’m planning is from Nov.28th-Dec. 20th, so sort of in the off season when fall is ending but winter isn’t fully in swing.

We have a good amount of free days (Dec.11-17th) before we’re aiming to be back in Tokyo, and we’re hoping to go up north and see some snow, but I’m aware it’s not going to be a 100% chance.

Are there any areas in Tohoku that would have decent snow coverage at this time? I understand Hokkaido would be better but it’s quite a lot of time on the train, and we aren’t too keen on buying flights since the plan is to buy the JR pass.

Tohoku Farm Stay Experiences?

Hi everyone!

My family is visiting me in Akita this August and I just wanted to ask for recommendations for an overnight farm stay experience in Tohoku, specifically in Akita/Iwate/Miyagi because I think those places are relatively easy to access (by shinkansen) if we're coming from watching the Omagari Fireworks. Is it possible/not possible? Any suggestions would be appreciated as well. Thank you!

want to obtain my master degree at this University

Hi everyone. I am currently a Dentistry student and I want to obtain MEXT scholarship at this university. First of all, I am not an English speaker even though I worked so hard to be fluent in english , just like trying to watch animes in English, talking with people and listening some podcasts. I know it's a long way to go. Success is a continuous journey . I try my hardest to keep my motivation high but there's always ups and downs part of the journey. Can anyone give me some insight to stay focus because I really want to realize my dream: study in Japan.

Ps: I will apply for the scholarship this year. I am stressing out because I don"t want to mess up . It''s do or die. So sorry if my English is so bad.

Traveling through Tohoku with JRPass

I'm currently planning another trip to Japan this Summer, and this time I would like to spend some time in Tohoku as I haven't done it so far. Unfortunately, it seems that most guides or information online, skip Tohoku except for things in the Winter. And the few things I can find, have no hotels/ryokan to be found on Rakuten, Booking, etc...

Any tips of places to visit and things to do/see? I do love nature, but I would like to focus on more local and traditional places. I do speak a bit of Japanese, but it is easy to figure out that I'm not a local, once people start talking to me.

The Gono Line

Hello r/TohukuJapan.

I need some assistance, and maybe there's a kind person or two in here that could help.

I'm visiting the region in October and have a really strong urge to take the tourist train, Resort Shiakami, on the Gono Line, from Aomori to Akita. It looks like a beautiful trip and a lovely way to spend a day. But I'm curious about a few things about the operation of the train.

After going round in circles for some time now, I haven't been able to find the answers to a few questions. So, if you're in the know, or can point me in the right direction to find some answers to some of these queries I have, I would be greatly appreciative.

  1. I think the train stops at certain points along the route, but how long for at each stop?

  2. If I got off at a stop and stayed a few hours, could I catch the next train that comes through?

  3. What is the earliest train out of Aomori towards Akita?

  4. How far in advance can I make a seat reservation? Regarding this, do the seats tend to sell out quickly, is it necessary to book way ahead?

  5. Is this line/train excluded from the JR Pass?

Sorry, it's a lot to answer. But any help to cross out even one or two of these points will help me out of my little quandary, as to whether riding this lovely little train is an option for me, or not.
