What if Touma met Shido Itsuka, Basara Toujou, Shirou Emiya and Issei Hyoudou

Just imagine a scenario where these 5 protagonists meet and develop a strong bond, become friends and talk about various topics from their respective worlds and life's.

Or a fanfic where these 5 join forces with eachother to fight a dangerous threat that's seeking to destroy their worlds.

I think it would be real interessting to see these individuals interacting with eachother, forming a relationship, and hanging out when the fate of their world's is not on their shoulders.

I REALLY want to know your honest opinion on THIS what if scenario.

Item Anbu manga is so fanservicey lol.

Frequent panty/underwear shots, random boob groping, boob/ass focus... Ah, welcome back, Index and Railgun season 1. Thanks, Strelka.

I guess they had to make up for the fanservice that got massively toned down in the flagship series over time (understandable). Hoping the series continues on for a long time, I'm pretty invested so far (for reasons unrelated to fanservice). Item has always been one of my favorite teams, next to Group, so I'm glad they're getting more focus here.

Would the current Board Chairman of Academy City do something like the Nuremburg Trials for Dark Side members in Academy City.

Been having this thought for a while. With Operation Handcuffs and various Darksiders in prison. Woudn't it be practical for A trial for every influential individual with a lot of power to be trialed like him. With all the different side stories of Dark Side unethical practices being made. Like it could improve Academy City's image.

Like The purpose of the Nuremburg trial was not just to convict the defendants but also to assemble irrefutable evidence of Nazi crimes, offer a history lesson to the defeated Germans, and delegitimize the traditional German elite. Would it make sense for Accelerator to take a page from this so this does not happen again even when he is out of the picture?

I am aware that some of these projects were Aleister's plan in motion but what about the ones not involved with the plan and more on Academy City and their power focused.

What do you guys think and your thoughts?

What are your thoughts on Academy City's notable researchers & scientists?

I've been a longtime fan and enjoyer of Toaru (though I haven't started NT yet), but to me, the science side has fascinated me more than anything else, especially the dubious and questionable angle in which it handles ethics and morality in the field of science, glorious, . The key figures especially, as they've all had a hand in allowing incredible things to happen, often at an immeasurable cost. Some of them show a hint of remorse and atonement at their doings, while others doubled down and rode it through until the end. . The key figures especially, as they've all had a hand in allowing incredible things to happen, often at an immeasurable cost. Some of them show a hint of remorse and atonement at their doings, while others doubled down and rode it through until the end.

In this post, I'd like to go over some of the labcoat-wearing figures that stuck in my mind all the way, in no particular order, perhaps other than chronological appearance in the story.

  1. Heaven Canceller

The frog-faced doctor.

Age: Looks to be about late 60s-70s

Occupation/Affiliation: Doctor, possibly chief medical officer of his own hospital

Appearances: Regularly in both Index and Railgun

Status: Alive

This guy's the real deal. It's unknown how he does it, but nobody dies under his watch and care, even if he would very much like them to. Supposedly helped found Academy City in the first place, but considering just whom he helped build it with, you could say that it came at a very, very dear price. Insight-wise he's probably #2 behind Aleister, but his integrity as a doctor prevents him from interfering too much sadly. Real chill dude, with some major aura and backstory. I like him a lot.

  1. Kiyama Harumi

The stripping lady with her philosophical musings.

Age: Seems to be in her 30s in the story

Occupation/Affiliation: Formerly a scientist and teacher at the Advanced Education Department, then resigned from trauma, becoming a researcher for AIM fields at the AIM Analytic Research Center. Inventor of the Level Upper.

Appearances: Railgun S1 (Level Upper Arc, anime-only Poltergeist Arc)

Status: Detained (manga), hospitalized, but happy with her students (anime)

An overly-logical train of thought masking a very deep-seated emotional wound. For all her quirks and off -vibes, I've always really liked her character when I watched Railgun, and even now she's one of my favorites. Though she started off as a scientist, and reluctantly got shoved into the position of a teacher despite not liking kids very much, she turns out to have a really endearing soft side around them. And sadly, like a lone, beaten mama wolf trying to take back her lost pups in a cruel forest, she did everything she thought she could after everything she saw them endure, and I'm glad the anime at least gave her a happy end, which I feel she ultimately deserved, on her birthday no less. I love you, Kiyama-sensei. Oh also! She drives a Lambo with Western driver's seat position, which is pretty neat.

  1. Kihara Gensei

\"For science!\" if it were a person.

Age: Looks to be 80s. Could even be older.

Occupation/Affiliation: Scientist, researcher, specializing in neuroscience. No particular affiliation, but everyone knows who he is. Supervised Kiyama Harumi for the Advanced Education Department.

Appearances: Railgun S1 (Level Upper Arc), Railgun T (Daihaiseisai arc)

Status: Not sure, but seems to no longer be among the physical.

Unfazed, unflinching, unapologetically progress-minded, this old coot has caused more trouble than he's worth. Nothing stands between himself and his pursuit of scientific advancement, whether it's his own kids, other people's kids, or even his own body. Notable contributions include giving the aforementioned Kiyama Harumi her lifelong trauma, allowing Therestina Kihara Lifeline to happen, creating the Esper Blue Sky Meth that equally ruins their bodies and futures in exchange for giving them a fleeting high (output in their powers), attempted to break Misaka Mikoto once more by forcing her to undergo a Level 6 shift, while also attempting to hijack Shokuhou Misaki's Exterior supercomputer. All that at a ripe age of potentially 80-something. Seemingly he failed at his goals in the end, though we're not sure what became of him after. Hopefully nothing good.

  1. Nunotaba Shinobu

With her trademark fish eyes...! or not.

Age: 17, high school 3rd year student

Occupation/Affiliation: Former student at Nagatenjouki Academy, expelled. Scientist & researcher in biopsychology, developer of the Testament machine and protocol.

Appearances: Railgun S (Sisters Arc, anime-only Silent Party Arc)

Status: Taken out of the picture (manga), taken out of the picture, but happy (manga)

Veeeery interesting character, with very sparse background writing. Aloof, stuck-up, not very sociable, yet soft-voiced, with a newly-realized heart of kindness. Already wearing lab ID lanyards when Misaka was still in elementary school, she's a real prodigy, something you don't see to often in this series where kids are the lab rats, and adults are the ones doing the labbing. But I think that's what makes her endearing; she's had a solid 10 years or so supervising shady experiments and putting her massive intellect to use, but she never really lost her way, especially when you consider that all of her young life until that point has been hanging solely on research. Again, despite her odd quirks and off-vibes (her dead fish eyes in the manga, and her gothic lolita dress fixation), she is still a teenage girl who, despite her initial indifference to the experiments she had overseen, still found it in her heart to try and wright whatever wrongs might have come out of her initial indifference, even if it means going hand-to-hand with hired thugs from Item, and picking up a loaded gun. I really liked her dynamic with Misaka Mikoto, almost protective of her and her clones, despite the futility that both girls knew when it came to stopping the project. The manga sadly gave her a rather dark end at the hands of Item the moment she really tried to put her invention to proper use, but at least the anime gave us more of her, despite the weirdness that came with the rest of the anime-only story. Overall, I really like her!

  1. Amai Ao

This is for killing my net worth!

Age: Appears to be in his 30s, though I'd say he looks older than his age.

Occupation/Affiliation: Researcher, formerly the chief overseer of the 1st Production Plan of the Sisters/Radio Noise project. Then became an investor in the 2nd plan, for the Level 6 Shift. Defected against Academy City after the experiment failed, to save his skin.

Appearances: Index (3 Stories/SS), Railgun S (Sisters Arc)

Status: Dead.

Now this is a pathetic man. His brains aside, he had the personality of a small dog, constantly aggravating and agonizing over every setback and failure putting a dent in his projects, and in turn, his investments. In the end, he took matters into his own hands, by kidnapping Last Order, intending to sell out to Academy City's opponents. In the end, this put him in the sights of both Accelerator and ex-colleague Yoshikawa Kikyou, two figures he had associated with in the past, who had set out to stop him at all costs. Ultimately, his biggest impact is successfully landing a bullet in Accelerator's skull, which changed his entire being going forward. However, I really liked his final standoff with Yoshikawa Kikyou, as he chastised her act of "stopping him" to be a complete contradiction of her own character, but in the end praised her for what he perceives as "strength", after she vowed to take him down, even if she's dragged down with him. Alas, the only time this dude had a decent moment, it's a second before he died. I'd say it's a pretty highlightable moment for the both of them, which brings us to...

  1. Yoshikawa Kikyou

Naive, not kind.

Age: Late 20's

Occupation/Affiliation: Former researcher, former overseer of the 2nd phase of the Sisters/Radio Noise project, in the Level 6 Shift.

Appearances: Index (3 Stories/SS) and onwards, Accelerator

Status: Alive

I didn't think much of her at first, but she really grew on me after reading the novel, and now she's one of the characters I think about a lot. Her main deal is that, despite her chief standing in overseeing the Sisters Project/Level 6 Shift, she had a rather lofty, naive view of the whole thing. Perhaps due to her long-abandoned ideals of being a schoolteacher, despite carrying an aura of (wannabe motherly) kindness, whether it was to the Clones (whom she futilely attempted to name and outfit), or to Accelerator (she treated him more like a younger colleague more than anything), she didn't feel very compelled to stop or object to the bloody experiment, even if that may have been what her heart wanted all along. So in the end, especially to someone like a heel-turned Accelerator, she merely looked like an irritatingly-hesitant bystander with an executive's badge. Accelerator himself berates her for it when he set out to find Last Order, at Yoshikawa's suggestion. Indeed, she is also very much self-aware of these faults, and even struggled to reconcile with them when it was her turn to make the a choice. But in the end, had she not been present during the events of August 31st, with the incubator and gun in tow, Accelerator may have been taken out permanently, and Last Order along with it. Even when her own life was at stake, she'd gladly throw it away, if it meant putting a stop to Amai Ao's plans once and for all. I like her a lot. And now that she's basically a bum freeloading with her BFF Yomikawa with Accelerator, I don't think she'd be in any trouble anytime soon.

  1. Kihara Amata

\"Why're you hitting yourself?!\"

Age: Estimated mid-late 30's

Occupation/Affiliation: Researcher, principal "ability developer" of Accelerator. Commander of Hound Dog, acting under orders of Chairman Aleister Crowley.

Appearances: Index II (Invasion Arc)

Status: Dead.

Now this here is a prime jackass. A bastard. Or, in the words of Accelerator himself, "shit-face". He only appeared very briefly, but even then he's still very memorable to me. His first appearance was to absorb Accelerator's shit-talking of him with a smile, then replying with wanting to just fucking kill him, which he proceeded to almost do, before plot happened. It's not often we get a labcoat-type character who fights with their fists, and in doing so, he even forced Accelerator to do the same for most of their fights. He also had his own shtick, which is "everyone except for me is lower than pond scum", so it's not like he even actively hates you; he just thinks you don't even exist. Like, holy crap, where else can you find a character this cold? Lmfao. His character didn't really serve much other than to completely antagonize Accelerator and crush his resolve, but it really did make for entertaining television & reading. He's so fun. Also, rest in peace to his voice actor, Keiji Fujiwara. Wouldn't have been Kihara without him.

So I guess that's it for my musings and yappings on the various labcoat-wearers of Academy City! I wanna hear what you guys also think of them. ^^

Split personalities in espers (+crackhouse Aihana Etsu theory)

In OT4, Kamachi established that the Toaru universe sees split personalities as akin to distinct souls, as shown in the case of Hino Jinsaku's outer and inner split personalities being swapped around by Angel Fall. How would this apply to espers? Would an esper with a completely split personality be capable of having two distinct personal realities within them, and thus two esper abilities? It makes sense in theory, as esper abilities are the result of the mind's subjective view of the world (personal reality). Two distinct personal realities = two abilities, right?

We've already seen with the level upper network that one person's brain having access to the personal realities of other people would allow them to use Multi-Skill, but could this effect be achieved entirely locally within one brain?

Kamachi hasn't really touched on the esper side of split personalities (correct me if I'm wrong), so I think he might be saving it for something.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Crackhouse Headcanon Theory Time!

Uiharu Kazari has a split personality, and the other half is Aihana Etsu. Uiharu herself is completely unaware. In fact, Aihana is the dominant personality, but Uiharu is the unassuming, public-facing daylight personality that absolutely nobody would suspect when trying to track down the #6, especially not herself.

Why Uiharu when Aihana being a split personality would mean that they could be just about anyone? Uiharu is the last person you'd expect to be Aihana, but when you look into the possibility, some interesting things seem to line up. It begins to make a bit of sense.

Uiharu hacking the AIM Jammers to achieve her higher form was a cover up (AIM Jammers shouldn't be able to work like that). There was more to it. As a distinct persona with her own personal reality, Uiharu herself does not have Aihana Etsu's ability, but she can thus receive its effects by taking Aihana's name. Aihana may have set up some emergency protocol with her power to allow Uiharu to make use of Aihana's ability to get out of dire straits (Aihana needs Uiharu to stay alive, after all). In the crisis with the Angel Dragon and Saten dying, Uiharu was in a desperate enough spot for the conditions to trigger. Uiharu subconsciously took on Aihana's name and became her ideal self to save the day with the most outrageous theoretically-impossible solution imagineable. Aihana's ability granted Uiharu the status of unbeatable protagonist for the short time she needed it. Uiharu admitted afterward that she probably wouldn't be able to do it again. She just tried it and it worked - she wasn't thinking about it too much, since she was under the effects of Aihana's ability.

Similarly, Aihana can call upon Uiharu's ability, Thermal Hand. Thermal Hand at a high enough level would be capable of creating complex patterns of temperature differentials within the surrounding air (and preventing them from equalising), resulting in the creation of powerful mirages that Aihana used to hide her appearance and distort her voice. Mirages created by Thermal Hand would explain why Touma touching his head with Imagine Breaker didn't dispell the illusion, but knocking out Aihana did.

Shokuhou implies in NT7 that she was involved with the real #6 at some point. The interfacing between Aihana and Uiharu's personalities may have been facilitated by Mental Out. Mental Out would also be useful for dealing with witnesses.

Uiharu is probably among the few people in Academy City who have the technical skills to completely cover up Aihana's tracks. Those skill were probably initially developed by Aihana, but Uiharu gained access to them for her Judgment work.

In Item vol3, Aihana appeared to Mugino with the silhouette of a small child. At that point in the timeline, a year before the main story, Uiharu was indeed very small. Touma didn't make much note of Aihana's size in GT2, so they must have grown a lot since then (like Uiharu). This jump in growth at least indicates that Aihana is around middle-school aged. (This size change was the one fact that made me start doubting the Aihana Etsu=Headband Girl=Erina Yamagami theory. Kamachi made that specific choice for a reason.)

It's possible that Uiharu switched (or was about to switch) into Aihana while being tortured by Kakine in OT15. The wording used in the scene is rather specific and suspicious.

Another wave of vicious pain hit her as her dislocated bone was manipulated even more.

By the time she decided she’d endure it, there were already tears falling from her eyes. She felt unfairness at not knowing why this was happening, fear at the overwhelming violence rendering her helpless, and frustration at her inability to break free. All the negative emotions mixed and muddled together, turning into a great pressure beginning to blossom within her very personality*.*
And now, purposely presented to her: a single escape route.
“Where is Last Order?”
As her consciousness flashed in pain, only Kakine Teitoku’s voice came to it.
“That’s all you need to tell me, and I’ll let you go.”
She looked back and forth, but there was no sign of an exit from this labyrinth—just a goal set up at a single point. Thrown into the darkness of violence as she was, she couldn’t help but consider giving up. Her pride as a member of Judgment and her personality as Uiharu Kazari both began to waste away under the temptation to be released from pain.
Her lips slowly moved.
As her tears fell in big drops, her mouth moved.
She couldn’t just remain silent.
Mortified at her own ungainliness, she said her last words.
“…What…?”
Kakine Teitoku’s eyebrows knotted, as though he didn’t understand.
Uiharu Kazari worked her trembling lips again. “Did you…not hear me…?” she said with all the power she could muster. “I said she’s in a place you’ll never, ever find her. I don’t remember…telling you any lies,” she said, even sticking her tongue out at him, trying to make as much of a fool of him as she could.

This sudden personality shift is played off as Uiharu's integrity as a Judgment officer, but this could also be Aihana taking control and using her precognition (the basis of Aihana's ability, which plots out a person's possibly futures in order to find the best one for them to take) to know that Kakine is already doomed in his current path. This could just be me looking too deeply into Kamachi's word choices. The Japanese text might indicate something different, or it might fit the theory even better.

In fact, Uiharu's unique personality and odd behaviour at times could be the result of her being made to unconsciously follow Aihana's instructions to keep her safe.

Aihana is probably considered a level 5 not only for the potency of their protagonist-gifting ability, but also the fact that they're the only known esper to showcase a genuine case of Dual-Skill.

The reason that Dual Skill is considered impossible by the general consensus of Academy City is the result of Aihana covering up the possibility, both to avoid people tracking her down, and to prevent children with similar conditions from being farmed for the possibility of mass-producing more Dual Skill espers.

The kanji in Aihana's name means Indigo, Flower, Pleasure
-The Sakugawa uniform is indigo in colour
-Flower goes without saying
-Uiharu is a very joyous and pleasant individual
There's probably no in-universe reason for this correlation, just Kamachi giving the reader a little hint (hardly all that subtle, really).

The given name Etsu (悦) is apparently a feminine one according to the Kanji dictionary I consulted (I make it sound like a notable revelation, but Japanese readers have known this since forever).

Aihana probably takes off the flower headband and stops the squeaky voice whenever they're in control. Perfect disguise. Superman would be proud.

Crackhouse Theory Over.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

So what do you think about the possibility of split personality espers being capable of possessing two personal realities and thus two abilities. Do you think it's something that could work, or nonsense that Academy City probably tried and failed at ages ago? What about the theory? Is it a good one, or do I desperately need to go outside?
