Does Ting customer service actually answer the phone or online chat?

Update: only waited ten minutes for an online chat person and they were extremely helpful. Happy to say that they are sending a technician tomorrow which is GREAT bc I was really worried it would be days before I could get help. Thanks all!

Been on hold for 2 hours on the phone, and another half hour waiting on chat. I've done all of the Ting troubleshooting steps and still need to talk with an actual service agent who will hopefully send an actual technician. My job depends on internet, so I'd really like this fixed sooner rather than later. Any ideas about how to talk to a human?

MY ting SIM thing

I got my ting x3 sim a couple of weeks ago. It was installed but it booting up as BOOST and chat Katie sayed it won't work and we'll send you a 2nd one. Today I got the 2nd sim, installed it and, again it booted as BOOST again, but chat Geoffrey J.: Well, no worries about it, it'll be a system glitch only and a back office thing to fix, they've decided. No necessary changes needed. Seems to work ok. Had to reconfigure voice-mail and wifi calling. So thanks.

Ting Support: Oh, BTW, did we forget to mention we whacked your voicemail?

Unhappy. The pesky "change your SIM or else" finally was finished. Well, support didn't mention voicemail was whacked. Thanks Ting, for helping another CONSUMER make a decision. Your days are numbered.

SIM update painless

There have been a number of posts about Ting service, so I thought I'd chime in with my experience today. It went well.

I chatted with an agent twice, once before the SIM went in and again afterward. When the agent activated the new SIM, the phone worked normally.

Because of the posts about Ting service these days, I was dreading the update, but it went perfectly.

New SIM, no service

Greetings, all. I use Ting for my backup phone, an L8Star BM70 that only works on T-Mobile 2G service. When I did the SIM "upgrade" today, it stopped working. Putting the new SIM into an iPhone shows that it runs on Boost, not TMobile. Is there a way to get a SIM that only uses TMobile like the old one?

Switching?

How do you cancel the service what with everything? (I just put my old sim back in and thankfully it still works, I tried the "chat" option to reset and I just keep getting reconnected. But based on y'alls stories that may be a blessing in disguise.)

I'm debating switching to MINT but I don't want TING to still charge me. I've been wondering for a while but I wanted to be able to cancel the service and not still be charged.

SMS Not Working: Support Useless

After we were sent a new SIM card, we have a fully updated iPhone SE that can no longer send/receive SMS messages.

Called customer support.

Over the course of two hours they had us..

Trouble shot our data connection. Reset out MMS settings. Updated towers, carriers, all that stuff. Reset the phone multiple times. Just step after step after step.

After spending the last two hours on this, the problem is till there and customer service is telling us there's nothing more we can do. This wasn't an issue until Ting told us to swap SIM cards. We didn't ask for this, they made us.

Now we're paying the same amount of money for significantly compromised service. I'm curious what incentive we have to stay with Ting at this point?

MMS broken/fixed after iphone sim card "upgrade"

I spent a couple of hours fixing an MMS problem after the forced sim card upgrade. The international support center was very friendly but didn't provide a solution after multiple calls. I gave up and just started hacking at it.

The problem occurs when sending pictures to a non-iphone (SMS/MMS).

I noticed the APN settings were empty. Also I read about others having MMS issues when the APN settings were not set.

What worked for me on three iphones with the latest OS:

  • Settings -> Cellular Data Network -> Reset Settings
    • I was told the wifi passwords would be reset but they were not
    • If you have a dual sim card then you will need to select the Ting sim before the Cellular Data Network will show
  • Shutdown phone. Restart (I was told to waiting 30 seconds before restarting)
  • Settings -> Cellular Data Network
  • Shutdown phone. Restart
  • Test

The settings are on the Ting website but for Android and the fields are different.

The network listed is Boost (no longer Ting). Apparently that is ok.

I tried a number of combinations but all of the above appear to be required for it to work again.

I complained to Ting about the process but I have little hope that it will be fixed for others upgrading. I hope this helps.

New "5G X3 SIM" killed Wi-Fi Calling and Visual Voicemail on iPhone 7

After the new SIM was sent to the wrong address once, I got the SIM and put it into my iPhone 7, which has iOS 15.8.3, the last version of iOS supported on iPhone 7.

I immediately lost Wi-Fi Calling and Visual Voicemail. I live in an area without a cell signal, so I can't live without Wi-Fi Calling.

I worked with a bunch of techs, did all sorts of troubleshooting, including a factory reset, and nothing worked.

According to https://help.tingmobile.com/hc/en-us/articles/115007068047-Wi-Fi-calling-setup-on-iPhone, "to use Wi-Fi calling, the iPhone must be an iPhone 6s or newer and running iOS 14.0 or higher." This information is out of date. A rep finally told me that I have to upgrade to a later version of iPhone, maybe iPhone 12, I was not listening carefully. I'm not willing to throw away a perfectly working iPhone, so I'll take my business elsewhere.

The front-line reps are not at fault, management screwed up. Management should have made sure this was done:

  1. Post on their website (at https://ting.yadda-yadda.com/whatever) a list of the minimum requirements for the new SIM to work without losing features, and what features are lost if you don't have the minimum requirements.
  2. On that instructions for inserting the new SIM, tell people to check https://ting.yadda-yadda.com/whatever for the minimum requirements.
  3. Tell all the front-line reps about items 1-2.

SIM change nightmare

Update: Thanks for all the advice. I ended up switching carriers for the sake of avoiding any downtime while I tried to sort it out. To anyone that may have the same issue in the future, it was locked to the T-Mobile network but had no trouble switching to another carrier running on the same.

Ting will not let me update my phone for the new SIM card! They say it is SIM locked to T-Mobile/ Sprint. Both T-Mobile and my phone show it’s locked to Ting. No other phones on my account are locked! Customer service keeps me on hold forever when I explain everything AGAIN until I give up. I have spent hours at this point on the phone between Ting, T-Mobile, and was even sent to Boost once.

I bought this unlocked iPhone outright from Target years ago. It’s only ever had a Ting account on it, I’ve been using them for years. It should have never been locked in the first place!

Is this a problem for anyone else? How am I supposed to resolve this? I keep getting emails that my phone line won’t work soon. This is ridiculous.

Ting internet really slowed down, Westminster MD

We pay the highest price already, and up til a couple of days ago our internet speed was amazing... Now though, stationary images are taking ages to load and online gaming is horribly lagged, which is a big problem since I do remote game testing for a living. Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

Ting Customer for Years, customer service appalling

UPDATE: The day after the complaint, Rod at Ting sent me an email to help me, explaining what the deal was, that some info I received was wrong, and activated the card for me. I had to only try out the sim card (the one that I was told wouldn't work), and it's working perfectly.. THANKS TO ROD, this matter is RESOLVED.

Original Issue:

This is going to be long, because my patience has finally ran out. Filed A BBB complaint today (for the good it will do). So let me share the painful details of just trying to get a sim card....

To start: Friday November 8, I was notified that the sim card for my phone was going to be deactivated on December 1, and a new one was being mailed.  I am not in the country now, and will not be back in the country by the time the card is scheduled to be deactivated.  The card was sent to the incorrect address (first time); to a place I left 4 years ago.  I went online and could only find the billing information, which was the correct address.

a.     That day I called Ting.  I have had this number over 20 years, I do not want to lose it.I was told the date for deactivation could not be changed.  The only option was to have someone activate it for me.  So I asked to have it mailed to the correct address.

2.     November 12^(th), I sent an email to Ting, describing the results of my phone call on the 8^(th).

·       I received a notice from “Zy”, reference number #6941894, to confirm that my shipping address was wrong, and to please tell her the correct one.  I sent her the correct one on the same day

3.     November 13, Zy replied back that it was changed to the correct address, and asked if I needed any other help.

·       I did not have the chance to reply before I got another email from mobilesupport@tingDOTcom on the same day (Nov 13)  This email told me my card would be deactivated December 15 (different date), and it too was sent again to my old address! (2nd time).

4.      November 14 I responded to both Zy and mobilesupport)

a.     To Zy, I replied that I was very frustrated that I just got an email notifying me a new sim card was being sent out to the wrong address, and to please send the sim card to the new address

b.     To mobilesupport.ting, I replied “PLEASE DO NOT SEND A SIM CARD TO THAT ADDRESS!!!!!  I HAVE ALREADY TOLD YOU THAT I NO LONGER LIVE THERE!    REFERENCE 6941894.”

5.      November 15 I received a reply from Zy saying, “ I understand your frustration, Let me do the sim card order, and I’ll send it to your correct address”.  She asked that I confirm the info she had.

6.     November 16, I confirmed that it was correct.

7.     November 18 Zy responded to me, saying the order was placed. I asked that the deactivation date be delayed, she responded that as long as it was activated by Dec 15 there would not be a problem.

8.     November 21 sim card arrived,(3^(rd) attempt) however, we could not start activation until November 23

9.     November 23 I called Ting, with my friend on another line (he had received the sim card and was willing to activate it for me.)  We started activation.

a.     The Ting rep asked for info about the phone, and upon finding the phone was locked, said it was not possible to do it.

b.     Got off the phone, my friend unlocked the phone, and we called Ting again.  Ting rep said to put the sim card in, and asked what carrier info was displaying.  My friend replied Boost.

c.     The Ting rep said they sent the WRONG SIM CARD.  So, once again.  ANOTHER sim card needs to be mailed out.  Again I asked if the deactivation date could be changed , as we're getting pretty close to cut off date. I was again told no it can’t be.  The rep said he would send the correct card out.

  1.  November 26 – I received a notice from UPS with a tracking number saying something was coming to me from California.  I do not know if this from Ting, I can’t find any shipper information.  It will go to the correct address, expected arrival date Dec. 4 end of day. A big unknown.

  2. Today November 27 – I received a message from mobilesupport saying that the sim card shipped out to my OLD ADDRESS!!!!!!

I am one of the most patient persons when mistakes are made..things happen, I get it. But the level of incompetence for something SO simple, repeatedly...just staggers the mind. I filed a BBB complaint, detailed everything, all I want is to be sure my sim card gets activated. I've had that number for decades, ported it when Ting was young and willing to be helpful. Guess things change.

awful service

Wow what a crap service experience with Ting. I will pay more so that I never want to talk to those people again. Just trying to activate the new SIM card, 35 minutes into the call after the 15th time she said "hold for one moment" ... she forgot to mute me, I could literally hear the agent talking to her friends and laughing after I had been on the phone for 35 minutes with her unable to help me.

Downtime for X1 - X3 sim swap

One of my elderly parents is due for an X1 - X3 sim swap, but unfortunately, they will be traveling out of state for several days after the new sim arrives, and I do not want them to find themselves without service.

Ting's FAQ states that upgrading the sim should leave them without service for only as long as it takes to chat with a rep online, pop in the new sim, and reboot the phone. Can anyone confirm that this was the case when they did the x1-x3 swap?

Also, is it true that December 15 is a hard deadline for the sim swap, or is Ting just allowing a margin of error since their current backend agreements expire at year's end?

Ting Won't Unlock Device

I canceled my plan with Ting. I started a plan with Mint. When I tried activating my eSIM with Mint they said my device was still locked with Ting. They said to call Ting and have them unlock my device so Mint could add me.

I called Ting and they said the phone manufacturer (Google) had the device locked. I contacted Google and they said, no, Ting has it locked.

I contacted Ting again and they said they could not unlock my device and there was nothing they could do.

Wtf is going on? Most expensive cancelation in that I might need a new phone now just to switch carriers?

My phone was unlocked/jailbroken, bought online not from Ting, when I started service with Ting about 3 years ago. Now that I want to leave I can't use that device with any other carrier? Doesnt make sense.

Moving on

I think our time with Ting is ending, we need eSIM. Any suggestions on where to take our service now. Verizon was tempting with their current Black Friday device offers with 3yr contract. But I loath being tied down by a contract and their service prices.

Old or “Legacy” Ting Users Being Sent the Wrong SIM apparently, under “Boost”. What’s the Solution?

The call center agents don't know what's going on either, they said.

So the old Ting users were sent an email to wait for a new SIM to arrive which must be activated before December.

Ours arrived this week but we were told it's not registering as Verizon.

Our phones now say it's "Boost". One agent said we can just put back the old SIM, but it's no longer working either.

So is the replacement going to be under Verizon networks? Or is this "Boost" name just temporary? What's really going on? Can /u/Rod_Ting confirm

Can't Receive SMS Text Outside US

An update on my previous post asking whether I could receive texts outside of the US, especially for the purposes of accessing Internet accounts: https://www.reddit.com/r/ting/comments/1gjr4do/receiving_text_messages_outside_north_america/

The answer is no.

I have a Google Pixel 8a with all updates and a Ting X3 SIM. I have a Ubigi eSIM for data while traveling in Japan. Settings make Ubigi primary for data, Ting primary for calls and texts. Internet calling has never worked for this phone, despite several calls to support.

Have tried to log into banks and Amazon, but never got the security code texts. And in case you think that they are intentionally not allowing texts to foreign countries as a security measure, note that I couldn't access my Ting account, until I called Ting support and had them remove two factor authentication from the account.

Strangely, I can send texts to other American account holders (in my case, Verizon) here in Japan, but can't receive them, except as a reply if I text first.

So you have been warned-- before you travel, install apps that allow you to access your important banks and Internet vendors without two factor authentication by text, or prepare to do without.

Despite me calling twice to let Ting know that my new SIM is being delivered to the wrong address, they have now sent three SIM cards to the wrong address

UPS has attempted delivery at the wrong address for the first SIM card and it was rejected due to it being the wrong address. I would happily pay the $14.99 fee to UPS to change the delivery address, but I can't because the shipper has restricted the ability to do so.

My billing address is listed correctly in my account settings on Ting's website. There is no option to change my shipping address on the website, but I have called twice to make sure it was updated before the SIM was shipped. The second time I called, customer service confirmed that it my current address was updated and that the new SIM would be shipped here.

I moved from the address they are attempting to ship to in 2018. What do I have to do to make sure I get this SIM card by December 15?

Update 11/26/24: I just received a new shipping notification for a SIM card addressed to the correct place!

Update 11/27/24: SIM received and activated!

Will Ting ever support cellular plans for Smartwatches?

I am thinking we may drop Ting because of this, we really need a carrier that will support a smartwatch with it's own cellular plan. I can't find any information on Ting's website they they can offer this. Is that correct?

What in the world is going on with Tings customer service?

I switched cards and they disconnected my internet and threatened to permanently shut down my account even though my new card was on the account. I’ve called 6 times today with no response and have been waiting for a callback for the last 4 hours with 4 different live chats open. Nothing. And why can’t I make a payment online?

Been struggling with WAN IP Addresses all day and support 'chat' is pretty useless

I've needed to reboot my router a few times today and the IPv4 WAN address is never received from DHCP. I've connected different systems, all fail to receive an address. If I request a IPv6 address, that comes down without issue. If I wait long enough and keep rebooting things, I'll eventually get an address.

Given that this happened with 3 different systems, and 3 different cat6 cables, I'm making the assumption that Ting has some sort of issue right now.

I tried to verify that via the 'chat' but after waiting for a technician for 30 minutes, the chat was ended when I didn't respond 3 minutes.

What's the best way to verify this was an issue with Ting itself?

Trying to help my daughter with an issue. The number I gave her from Ting's own website goes to T-mobile support.

I guess I've been out of the loop? What's going on?

Receiving Text Messages Outside North America

Will be traveling to Japan in a couple of days, and wanted to find out folks' experiences with receiving SMS messages, especially confirmation codes from financial institutions, outside North America.

Here is my setup:

**Google Pixel 8a with Ting X3 physical SIM and Ubigi eSIM for Japanese mobile data after landing.

**WiFi Calling is enabled in the device settings of the Ting website, but indicated as off in the Pixel settings. When I try to flip it on, it whirs and spins, then gives me an error message and tells me to contact the vendor. Haven't done that yet.

**Allow International Roaming, Allow International Roaming Calls, and Allow International Roaming Data are all enabled on the Ting website.

Ting's website says you can receive text messages abroad if you have International Roaming enabled, but notes that "International Roaming" is restricted to Canada and Mexico.

So is there anyone out there with a similar setup, and if so, what was your experience outside North America?

FYI, I tried an experiment (here in the US) where I turned off my Ting SIM, sent a text from my wife's phone, and received it on mine, but was unable to reply. I am not sure if that was because WiFi calling was actually enabled (even though Settings says it's not) or somehow the Ubigi eSIM helped, even though it has a Japan only mobile data plan. Turning off my Ting physical SIM also caused it to completely vanish; I was not able to turn it back on because it was no longer visible. After hours of trial and error, found the solution: 1) power down phone; 2) remove SIM tray with Ting SIM in it; 3) power up phone; 4) insert SIM tray and SIM while phone is live; 5) wait for message pop-up that says something like "New SIM detected, what would you like to do with it?" This won't work if you merely restart the phone.

Keeping up with everyone else

Hey Ting! I've been a loyal and satisfied customer for about 7 years. I want to upgrade my aging iPhone 12 to something a bit more current. But Ting doesn't support phones that require eSIM. I'm not saying anything that hasn't been said before, but I'd at least like some real update or assurance that Ting will eventually support phones that are less than 5 y.o. C'mon Ting, I don't really want to switch carriers, but I may have no choice.
