Ting install in NC...notes on IPv6 magic...

I just had residential Ting fiber internet installed here in NC. Install process went without a hitch. There was a delay of about 10 days in getting the final installation but the teams to do the micro trench through the yard, fiber blow, and install of box on the side of the house happened within 5 days. The install tech for the service was friendly, accommodated my questions and was helpful enough to pull the the fiber to exact location in the house where I wanted the service delivered. He even fished a new pull line through the 100ft + conduit for me.

I did ask him about what the support was for IPv6 but he said that he didn't have a lot of info there. No surprise there.

Once the service was up and running I saw that an IPv6 address was delivered to my router. So I thought that everything was good to go for IPv4 and IPv6. Not so much I was soon to discover.

My router (Meraki MX) requested and received both a IA_PD (prefix delegation, /56) and IA_NA (Non-temporary address) from the upstream Ting DHCPv6 server. I was able to ping remote IPv6 hosts using the IA_NA address just fine. Traffic sourced from one of the IA_PD addresses would make it out to the internet, get a response, but that response appeared to be dropped by the router directly adjacent to my house service. The IA_PD /56 subnet was being provided but for some reason it wasn't getting routed back to me across the last hop. I used a packet sniffer on the ONT-Router link to confirm this. MTR from the remote host verified that the routing got the traffic back into the Ting network.

I did open up a case with Ting and they got back to me with this response (summarized by me):

  • A IA_NA address is not required for the end user router device as a link local FE80:: address can be used instead (this was key information)
  • Ensure edge user firewall is not intercepting or blocking ICMPv6 traffic on the WAN interface
  • If possible, ensure your IPv6 router is using DUID type 1 in all of it's DHCPv6 requests.

After doing some packet traces on the link between my ONT and router, I discovered that my router was using DUID type 3 instead of the recommended type 1 message. My router vendor does not support type DUID type 1 so I was a bit stuck. At the same time that router did not give a lot of flexibility in it's configuration.

Not be deterred I tried a few different devices to see if anything would support a DUID type message. A few did but I didn't really want to implement a virtualized pfSense or OPNsense router. This would have probably worked eventually but I just didn't want to get into the weeds of these software routers.

What I ended up doing was using a hardware router that still only supported DUID type 3 but that allowed me much more flexibility in its configuration. This was a Cisco ISR1121 box. I configured the C1121 so that it would request a IA_PD address but NOT request a IA_NA address. This was the trick necessary to get the routing to work with a type 3 DUID request. Each time I added in the IA_NA request the routing for the IA_PD traffic broke. Not sure why, but that was the reality.

This same trick of doing the IA_PD request but not the IA_NA request should work for any router as best I can tell.

Here is the configuration I used on my Cisco ISR1121 to get this to work for this topology:

Topology 1: [ TING ONT ]---[ Cisco ISR1121 ]---[ House LAN ]

interface GigabitEthernet0/0/0
 description Connection to Ting ONT
ip dhcp client client-id ascii RouterID
 ip address dhcp
 ip nat outside
 negotiation auto
 ipv6 dhcp client request vendor
ipv6 dhcp client pd SUBNETS rapid-commit
 ipv6 address autoconfig default
 ipv6 enable
 ipv6 nd autoconfig prefix
 ipv6 nd autoconfig default-route
!
interface GigabitEthernet0/0/1
 description LAN port config
 ip address 10.10.10.1 255.255.255.0
 ip nat inside
 negotiation auto
 ipv6 address SUBNETS ::5:0:0:0:100/64
 ipv6 enable
 ipv6 dhcp server dhcp-pool rapid-commit
 ! ipv6 nd managed-config-flag
! I don't think you need the line above but if it still doesn't work add this
! command as well to see if it helps.
!
ipv6 dhcp pool dhcp-pool
  dns-server <ipv6 address for DNS server #1>
  dns-server <ipv6 address for DNS server #2>
!
ip nat inside source list internal_nat interface gigabitEthernet 0/0/0 overload
!
ip access-list extended internal_nat
 10 permit ip 10.10.10.0 0.0.0.255 any
 20 deny ip any any

When it was all said and done, I engineered a solution like the topology below because I still wanted to take advantage of all the existing config and visibility I had from the Meraki MX.

Topology 2: [ TING ONT ]---[ Cisco ISR1121 ]---[ Meraki MX ]---[ House LAN ]

While this config works perfectly, it's definitely non-trivial and has flavors of "hack" associated with it. If folks are interested in how I got topology 2 working I can post that information as well.

I hope this info helps folks out with getting their Ting IPv6 service working correctly.

Billing issues + runaround. Disappointed.

Hey just sharing my recent experience. Been with Tong about 6 years in total, about 3 years consecutively prior to last month. I have no idea what’s happened for his company.

At the start of the month my autopay didnt go through and I noticed via email. I thought perhaps my bill was a few bucks more, made the deposit, and expected my normal payment to be taken, generally 40-45ish most months for me, sometimes up to 60ish if I’ve used a lot of data for me. I stay on wifi at home and at work, I’ve been using ting for years for cheap phone service without issue because I’m just familiar with how much data I use on average.

So when I got a second email saying payment couldn’t be collected the following day I was a bit confused. I decided to give a call to support and was shocked when I was told that my bill was a whopping 180. I figured there was a mistake of some sort and requested that someone double check there wasn’t a billing problem. I told the agent I spoke with that I couldn’t pay 180 at that time but that I was happy to make a partial payment. I told her I thought the data amount was wrong and she told me she’d give me an extension for a week while they looked into it. Despite explaining my data usage she was suggesting I must have accidentally started hot spotting from my phone or watched a few movies ect, despite me being able to check my iPhone’s data usage and see that I wasn’t close to what was being claimed.

The way I was treated just didn’t sit right with me and I suspected that they were going to come back and say there were no issues, so about half an hour later I went to the Verizon store, switched to their 15gb plan and ported my number out. I’m still well under my limit in the first month for that plan mind you. As I suspected the agent reached back out to me to tell me my data usage couldn’t be incorrect and stated she could waive 30 off the bill since I was a long time customer. I asked her to send my a final copy and ensure my account was closed out. She assured me via email it was and that I was going to be sent a final bill.

Second hiccup is that instead of sending it as o requested tong simply charged the 180 off my card later. This really messed up my month and I was super pissed but whatever. No reply to my email asking why the mailed bill was not honored but I figure I’m not a customer anymore so what’s the point.

Well folks today I notice an email saying they’re having trouble collecting my payment and that my service may be disrupted. I call up and receive hemming and hawing about if my account is actually told and I’m told I’m being billed an additional 100! After I had swapped out my SIM card and been told I was paying my final bill. Now the new rep is claiming there’s been a miscommunication and that I had high data usage again which is just a kick in the teeth at this point. There’s apparently no supervisors to talk to on Fridays either from what I was told over the phone. I used to suggest this service to friends and family but never again. I’m going to get my mom switched off it with me because I don’t know what’s changed but I know there’s some sort of issue with data tracking because in with Verizon so far I’m only just at 4gigs and I’ve been using my data more generously than normal since I get 15gb on their plan for the same price my old phone bill used to charge me.

Bit of a rant but if anyone else is having billing issues just want to say you’re not alone.

Can't update my payment method - called Ting Mobile support - same thing

I have been having this problems for a few months now.

I tried updating my payment method using all possible cards. My cards work fine on all other websites except Ting. Therefore, it's Ting Mobile issues.

The error message was: " Your billing information could not be updated. "

I called Ting Mobile support to try to update my cards, same thing happened.

Ting Mobile needs to fix this ASAP

Referral credit not applied

My sister used a referral link to sign up with Ting and was told she'd get $25 referral credit. She's been with Ting since January and still no referral credit. How does it work really? I want to use Ting and was thinking of joining Ting using my sister's referral link but it's so iffy....

Fyi for anyone switching from Ting

I ported out my numbers and cancelled service with Ting. The next day two credit cards contacted me saying my phone service provider told them my number was disconnected. My number is still the same, is this normal?

Will any unlocked phone work?

I'm looking into getting a new phone. I have always gotten my phones from the Ting shop before, but they don't really seem to have many good phones anymore. Can I get a phone from anywhere and as long as it unlocked it will work for Ting? Or are there other factors I need to be aware of?

Lost my sim while traveling abroad, have a new spare sim but have missed support and don't want to wait another day

Support was closed when my flight got in yesterday and closed by the time I woke up today. I'd really like to set it up but there doesn't seem to be any option to set up a new sim or port number from an active device to the same device. If I select deactivate device it says I'll lose the number and my plan, if I select move number to new device it forces me to input the IMEI and says this device is already active. Any ideas?

Can't Activate New Phone

I got an unlocked Motorola and got as far as activating the SIM on it but when I try to move number from my old phone to the new phone I get an error that says:

Sorry, something went wrong.

Error: No subscription information for moving number
Please try again

I then just get sent back to the screen where I can select the new phone and enter the SIM again and it just repeats. Tried activating a different new SIM that I also have and get a message the No Activation Is Needed

Not sure if anyone is even still on this sub but hoping for some help.

Thanks!

Data Top-Up never actually works

I'm on the 5GB plan, and there's been 3 different months now where I've capped out on data usage. However whenever I do the data top-up for an extra 1GB, nothing actually happens, I still have no mobile data.

I tried talking to support both via email and phone, but the only thing they really said was "uh idk reboot your phone and try again" but that didn't work either.

Anyone else experienced this? Once my billing cycle resets, everything's fine again; but it's annoying to pay for the extra data and not actually get it. Sure it's only $5, but still.

I don't want to have to jump through all the Tier 1 support steps that I've already done a hundred time, kinda wish it would just get fixed

#EDIT

Of course, as soon as I post this, it seems to works now. So maybe it's fine, false alarm.

Billing information

I have an account with valid payment information and I was trying to port to ting, they have the payment info because I order a sim card off of that account with the same billing info. I contract ting to port my number and they tell me to add payment info to my account. I try and it says "Your billing info could not be updated" Weird, so I try a new card and get the same message. I call customer support and they try, they say my card is declined, but I got nothing on my end. I try another card on my account online and it won't work still. I call in again and they said I can only try like 3 times a day so I need to wait until tomorrow. Screw it, I changed the email on my account and made a new account, try to add billing info and I still get the same message. I have no clue what is going on. I read some other posts and it seems the help team on here is more helpful then on tings website, so I have com here for help.

Has anyone been able to use an eSIM in a foreign country for data ONLY while keeping Ting as their primary line?

In my Ting settings, international roaming is enabled for voice/text and disabled for data.

I want to add an eSIM as a secondary line for data only, and I want it active simultaneously with my Ting service.

My goal is to get calls and texts at my Ting number while also having data…but not paying Tings outrageous international data roaming fees.

I think this is theoretically possible. Just wondering if anyone has succeeded. Sometimes Ting makes things difficult/impossible for no apparent reason. Thanks.

Continuing issues with Ting Mobile (since switching from Xfinity)

Continuing issues with Ting Mobile (since switching from Xfinity):

(1) MMS messages do not download. Ever. I have tried numerous message apps. Won't download automatically, won't download when I click the "down" button.

(2) Network information gets deleted and I have to retype it whenever the phone restarts or a software update happens. This is DANGEROUS. I was in an unsafe neighborhood last week and if I hadn't had my work phone, I would have had no cell service.

The second issue is a known issue w Samsung phones. I don't know wth is going on with the first. It's really not acceptable.

Ting coming to finish Ting Internet install next week. What should I be doing?

Ting is coming a week from today. Last week, Ubiquity connected the fiber on the street to a box they put on my house.

I haven't received any information on what to expect or what to have ready. Presumably, Ting will mount their modem inside my house, and connect that with the Ubuiqity box on the outside through a hole they'll drill though a wall.

I believe their modem supports 2.5 GbE Ethernet, in which case ideally I'd like to have either a 2.5 GbE-capable Ethernet router or a Wi-Fi 6E mesh system that supports 2.5 GbE, but if I'm not ready to pull the trigger I'll just connect my current mesh system.

What else, kind Ting Internet users?

I hope someone at Ting can help out.

I get 5 spam calls (at least) a day, all with the same robocall voicemail. I normally wouldn't care if not for the voicemails.

They are all clearly spam calls from the same people, but they all have different numbers. I got a call blocker that can use wildcards, so mostly the calls are blocked, but only at my phone.

This seems like something Ting should be able to do something about.

I guess I can give all my data to Google and have them screen my calls, but I really hate that idea too.

Text messages are coming in at like 4am each day from prior day -- but not all.

I'm running into an issue where text messages from the day are showing-up at like 4am or 5am the following morning, and two text messages sent on Monday afternoon showed up this morning (Wednesday) at about 4am ?!?! But not all texts are delayed it seems, I am getting some of them. Any thoughts? I've tried calling support in the past for issues, and they're not very helpful since Ting sold out to whoever owns my account now. I hoped someone here had suggestions before I called support and listened to them read scripts for 20 minutes.

The phone has been rebooted multiple times and all updates are in place. It's a Moto G Play 2021, and issue started last week.

Is the Website Broken? Can't get Login window to populate.

Hi All,

Trying to activate a new phone, but can't get the Login window to populate. I've tried two browsers on three different devices and internet connections, it's not working on any of them. Firefox/Chrome/Brave, tried all 3 on my work laptop/internet, home desktop PC/internet, and iOS phone on mobile internet.

Anyone else? Tried clearing cache and all the other typical basic things.

eSIM support/Future of the company

I just read an old article that said Ting doesn't support the iPhone 14 and up. I have a 14 that I could use to upgrade from an iPhone 8 that still works fine, but I just contacted support after reading this to see their response. Is this still true? If it is, I'm wondering what will happen to the company when no one's using phones with sim cards anymore.

Status of Ting Internet Installations?

Is Ting Internet build-out stalled? They started out gangbusters in our city, but now seem to making little or no progress -- the availability map has not changed.

I contacted them about the status of their installations and heard nothing back. So I'm wondering if they are stalled out and having funding issues.

Another concern: I pre-ordered months ago when they first announced they were coming to our area. Now they're offering a $200 credit for new sign-ups, but this "does not apply to pre-orders." I showed enthusiasm for their service and helped give them a boost by pre-ordering, but now I'm missing out on a perk because I pre-ordered.

Despite my concerns, I hope they are forging ahead because I'm ready to schedule an installation the minute their fiber service is available in my neighborhood.

UPDATE 2024-03-20: Ting customer service did eventually respond. That's encouraging. The rep did not give any updates on installation progress -- just referred me to their map (which was given an updated date a couple weeks ago, but the actual installation coverage area shown in the map has not changed in a couple months). I was referred to a "Residential Onboarding" telephone number for more information. I haven't called this number yet, but am encouraged that my request was acknowledged and that I was given a phone number for assistance regarding installations. I'll create another post if I obtain more information. My optimism meter has bumped up from 5 out of 10 to 8 out of 10.

wait, so are my Ting numbers are risk or something?

I've been a Ting customer for probably 10 years with 3 lines on it. I found /r/ting randomly recently and see a lot of complaints. Aside from the fact that prices don't seem competitive any more, what exactly is going on? Apparently there was a change in ownership, but are my phone numbers at risk? (That would be disastrous for us, I have all my accounts/etc associated with ting).

Long Term Ting Customer Considering US Mobile vs Tello

Hi all,

I'll save the long spiel and rant but would just like to say that I loved Ting for what it was for the 10 years or so but it's become impossible to ignore the really questionable solvency and reliability of the service. I regularly don't receive texts (authentication numbers thankfully work fine) and pictures vis SMS regularly seem to be unsent especially if sending many.

I am currently debating between US Mobile and Tello. I have to admit, I am slightly skeptical of Tello's pricing. We already know that Ting was operating at a loss and I have to wonder if Tello would suffer the same fate later on down the road.

I like the flexibility of US Mobile between Verizon and T-Mobile, where I live T-Mobile generally wins but Verizon can at times be better.

I have heard good things about both from reading other posts on this subreddit, but I would like to hear from more recent subscribers of both before I make a decision.

Just switched from Ting to US Mobile after 7+ years

Put me down as another longtime Ting customer (7+ years) who switched away to another carrier due to Ting’s lack of eSIM support.

I really liked Ting, and I didn’t want to switch away; in fact, when I last upgraded my phone, I intentionally picked a model that still had physical SIM support (iPhone 12) so that I could stay on Ting.

But it’s clear at this point that eSIM support will never happen – Ting claimed it was “near the top of our list” six years ago – and my next phone will be an iPhone 14 or newer, so I decided to just bite the bullet and make the switch now.

In retrospect, I should have done it sooner. It took me all of 30 minutes to port my number to US Mobile and activate my service (yet another benefit of eSIM: you don’t have to wait to get a physical SIM in the mail!). And US Mobile’s prices are about half what I was paying on Ting for the same amount of data.

I honestly think Ting is going to drive themselves out of business if they don’t get their act together on eSIM. I don’t understand how they plan to keep (let alone attract!) customers without being able to support any current iPhones. It just seems unsustainable.

Why do I have to call to cancel if I've already ported out?

As the title says. Ported out my number, which was painless and wicked quick BTW, but to close my account I have to call in, why?

edit Was able to do it through chat. Only took a few minutes, quick and painless. Thanks Ting!
