The Lion's Den - Weekly Discussion

Weclome to The Lion's Den, this is a generic weekly discussion thread about anything England, England players, or any related matters! As usual, don't be a cock and this is not a vehicle for fans from other teams to troll or otherwise push their bias.

Any articles, images, or the like should still be their own posts. Lastly, if a conversation becomes large enough, we may lock that particular thread and recommend it become a post in it's own right.

If you have any issues, do flag to the mod team, and we'll resollve ASAP.

Prediction they won’t be a City player in Tuchel’s first squad.

Walker is clearly finshed. Lewis is overhyped. Foden is overhyped and in decline. Stones is injury prone and Grealish is also not the type of player Tuchel goes for.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka will he ever get capped for England?

Afterall he is the most expensive English player of all time who doesn’t have a senior England cap (And the core pretty high up thee most expensive player of all time without an senior international cap of any country). He nearly got capped in 2019 but pulled out injured.

He is currently in good form and right back is a fascinating area to see where Tuchel goes.

Michael Cooper as potential goalkeeper.

Has been very good in the Championship this season and is probably going be in the PL next season one way or another. So will Thomas Tuchel call him up in March or June?

2026 World Cup qualifying seeding

Pots for the 2026 WC Qualifying Draw

Based on FIFA World Rankings. Draw is on 13th December. Who do you want to play?

In typical UEFA fashion, the Nations League playoffs & finals have made this a lot more complicated than it first appears but quick summary of the information for England fans:

The four teams participating in the 2025 UEFA Nations League Finals (identified as the winners of quarter-finals 1–4) will be guaranteed to be drawn into four-team groups. All other teams in pot 1 can be drawn into any group. This massively increases the possibility of England being in a 5 team group. However, it isn't necessarily guaranteed (I believe? I'm not 100% sure on this so please correct me if I'm wrong!)

Nations League play-off teams from pots 2-4 can be drawn into any group size, but can only join five-team groups that do not already contain quarter-finalists or promotion/relegation play-off participants. All other teams from these pots can be drawn into any group. This means that England can draw pretty much any team in these pots but cannot be drawn with certain combinations of teams. For example, we can't be drawn with both Turkey and Slovenia because they're both in the playoffs (Again, please correct me if I'm wrong but this is how I'm reading it?)

There are other conditions regarding political clashes, winter countries and excessive travel, but full details can be found on the Wikipedia page:

Anthony Gordon or Jamie Gittens?

Whose better? Both have underwhelmed at England level - Seniors for Gordon and U21 for Gittens but have done well for their clubs. But Gordon has gone backwards this season while Gittens keeps on improving.

Were they squad tensions at the Euros ?

I am saying yes. As part of Bellingham interviews today he mentioned how the new faces at the last camp helped make him smile. To me it sounds like maybe he didn’t like some of those who were missing prehaps. The likes of Foden, Rice, Stones, Saka and Palmer for example were absent from the recent camp.

Should Declan Rice’s place be given going forward

With the fact Arsenal played pretty well yesterday with him unused on the bench and the fact England played better without last week. Arguably Jones is in the inform players to be in the midfield.

Grealish vs Gordon

I think both will continue to be selected but who do you favour most in the starting 11 on the left wing?

Looking ahead: is Phil Foden’s place in the England squad no longer a given?

Phil Foden is undeniably one of the most talented players England has produced in recent years, but looking ahead to the next March, it’s worth asking: has he done enough in an England shirt to justify his place?

While his performances for Manchester City have often been excellent in previous seasons, his impact on the national team hasn’t been as convincing.

Think about it: when Foden’s not been available for England, have we truly missed him? He hasn’t had that consistent, game-changing influence that makes him feel undroppable—like Harry Kane or Jude Bellingham. With so much competition for attacking and creative positions, can we justify including Foden if his form doesn’t pick up?

Take James Maddison, for example. He’s been in brilliant form for Spurs this season, arguably one of the Premier League’s best creators, yet he struggled to get consistent minutes under Southgate or Carsley. Or look at Marcus Rashford—a player who, even when in form, couldn’t secure a regular starting spot. Both of these players arguably contribute as much, if not more, to England in their roles, and they’ve struggled to get a look-in.

If Maddison and Rashford face such tough competition for their places, should we really treat Foden any differently? Should he be guaranteed a spot based on his potential or his performances for Manchester City, especially when those performances might be elevated by the system and players around him? It’s fair to ask if what works for City can truly translate to the England setup.

Quick update on "finished" Harry Kane

Another hattrick for Harold tonight in a 3-0 win over Augsburg, including a stunning touch and finish for his 3rd goal.

Kane now has 7 Bundesliga hattricks in 43 appearances.

This season, Kane has played 17 games for his club resulting in 20 goals, and 9 assists. He is averaging a goal contribution every 47 minutes for Bayern Munich.

For club and country combined this season, he has 29 G/A in 22 games.

Since joining Bayern, he has made 62 appearances, resulting in 62 goals and 21 assists.

Kane has now broken the record to become the fastest player to reach 50 Bundesliga goals.

Since the beginning of the 2024, no player in world football has more international goals than Harry Kane.

Build the team around Watkins?
