Anyone remember which episode it was when Phoebe talked about a prison closing down and the town’s residents being made because it resulted in a lot of them losing their jobs??

similar podcasts?

Just discovered gimlet's crime show and a concerned citizens swindled. Both are very similar podcasts to criminal and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend anything similar.

I put together all 200 of Phoebe Judge's criminal intros into an eight-minute-long segment 😆

Link to that and other analytics here.

I love how she introduces the podcasts, and wondered if her method has changed over time. It looks like it has! She's dropped the "and" and changed from a downward to an upward intonation.

Looking for a specific episode on a woman who killed her partner in self defense

Phoebe interviewed a woman that served many years (over a decade?) in prison for killing her partner. They'd meet in middle or HS and reconnected as young adults. After they'd been dating for a while, it came out that he was doing (and maybe selling?) crack, and became more and more verbally and physically abusive toward her. One nigh (I think around Christmas?) he forced her to go down on him in his car outside her mom's house and started choking her. She grabbed the gun he kept beneath his seat and shot him, then ran out of the car. He drove away and ended up crashing into a neighbors house, where he died of either exposure or the GSW. The police eventually catch up with her - she has a terrible lawyer, and ends up with a hefty prison sentence. She's since been released.

That's all I really remember apart from the fact that she's a wonderful storyteller w/ such an expressive voice/tone.

Can anyone help me find this episode?

Finding episode help!

I’ve been hunting for an episode for a while, but I’m not certain that it was an episode of Criminal.

The story that I remember involves a woman going down to Mexico (or another Central American country) to help search for a little girl held kidnapped by her father (and maybe mother). She is so enthralled by the case that she makes it her mission to help law enforcement and someone succeeds.

Really hoping I’m on the right track.

Thanks in advance!

Need help locating an episode!!

There was an episode where Phoebe interviewed a man whose son had been murdered. He had been in contact with his son's murderer and they had actually developed a relationship and it helped with his healing from the trauma. I've been through the whole website and looked at the descriptions, but cannot find it. What is this episode? Did I imagine it? I don't think it is from another podcast. I distinctly remember it being Phoebe who interviewed this man. Thank you!!!

Live show cancelled?

Was anyone planning on going to the live show tour? I have tickets and through my venue it looks like it may have been cancelled but I have not been contacted and there is absolutely zero information out there about the tour

Edit/update. Thank you everyone for your information. I messaged them on Instagram and they apologized for the confusion, yes the tour has been canceled and they said the venues were supposed to reach out. I did not personally purchase my ticket my friend bought them and I paid her so I will have to see if she just never received an email or if she missed it

Anyone else started skipping ads since Phoebe stopped reading them?

Phoebe’s voice is so pleasant and easy that I never minded listening to the ads that she read. I even bought a few things because of them! But since joining Vox the ads have become the typical spliced-in ads that feature in every podcast on their network, rather than the old-radio-style ones read by Phoebe.

I know it was to be expected with the shift to Vox… but if anyone with power is reading this, I skip the ads now, and I’m sure I’m not the only one! I’m sure they’d get more reach if they could go back to having Phoebe voicing the ads featured in the podcast.

Hi, it’s not Phoebe. I’m really missing the Xmas ad break where she talks about “a Masquerade coffee mug… with a nice picture of a rabbit on it… and some brand new Criminal socks.” Does anyone have a recording?

Beet 100-series episodes?

A couple years ago I listened to every episode from #1 to around #100. Not sure if I got bored of them, or if the overall quality declined, but I’m hoping this community can share some of you favourites from episode #100+. I’d love to get back into it!!

Thanks

The best podcast ever

Just came to say, this has got to be the best podcast ever.

I'm always waiting for the new episodes.

I've chewed up so many miles on the highways listening to it.

I don't enjoy true crime podcasts focussed on only the gory details. Criminal is so well balanced.

If you enjoy Criminal, do you have any recommendations for other podcasts that you think are equally as amazing?

Help finding an episode!

I'm trying to find an episode of This is Criminal (I think) where the mother was primarily narrating, and it was about how her son (who was mentally disturbed) had killed his father. They'd had a few more children as well - vivid description I remember was when the mother described how happy their home love was when the children were small how they ask slept on a king bed on the floor like a pile of puppies. Please help me find this episode!

Thank you!

Putting this “thank you for this podcast” out into the aether.

This podcast is spectacular. I’m new to podcasts, I came to them because of hearing a clip from “Do you know Mordechai?” On CBC radio. I listened that, then looked and looked for something similar. I avoided Criminal because the name makes it sound one dimensional…and too heavy. All the fans here know how wrong I was: the podcast should be called “Humanity”. So much more than a true crime podcast.

Thanks again…and if anyone can recommend something in the same vein, I’d be appreciative…Criminal episodes will run out…eventually :D

Kid friendly episodes?

Got a road trip tomorrow with my 10-12 year old kids tomorrow. I was going to play Richard Smalls for them because it's such an amazing story. Any others that would be appropriate? Not too worried about language or mild violence, just not looking for murder or sexual assault.

Help finding an episode!

I'm looking for an episode... What I remember about it is that there were two children missing and a random woman who would walk her dog in an area in the woods found them, or her dog fur, at least. Does this sound familiar?

Help finding an episode about Stephen Gore.

I listened to an episode about Stephen Gore, a man who sold bodies to the military as test dummies. I can’t find it now! Am I crazy or do you know what episode I’m talking about?

Transition Music

Does anyone know the name of the song that plays during the podcast sponsor ads? I checked the website and couldn't find it.

Some kind of minimalist jazz bass or cello, with an organ, I guess...

Episode 156: Sister Helen

I was so touched by this episode, probably the best episode of any podcast I've listened to. Sister Helen is the epitome of empathy and humanity. The most humanistic look at the death penalty, summed up in 40 minutes of beautifully produced audio.
