Monster Club Reaches 2k

Ah I thought I'd never see the day. We finally reached 2k members LOL. Anybody care to share what you like best about the show? I'll start with its attention to mental health and dealing with trauma. Almost all its episodes shed light on it somehow. My favorite episode is probably the one that involved the rogue MoL and his golem.

The game show has featured Supernatural many times in the past. Recently, it featured our spin-off in its questions.

Just started watching

I've been watching Supernatural for over 10 years, rewatched dozens of times. I just started watching The Winchesters and I'm confused because it clearly shows Mary teaching John about demons, but from what I remember of Supernatural, John knew like nothing about the Supernatural when he started hunting. Edit: I couldn't stand the show😂 I skipped to the finale for answers and im a little confused. So the reason John knew about monsters in this show is because they're a different John and Mary? From a different Earth? Is that right? They aren't the same as the John and Mary from Sam and Dean's earth in Supernatural?

Pilot Anniversary

Today in 2022, The Winchesters aired its pilot. What were your best/favorite experiences with it? (Let's try to keep the overall tone of the thread light and positive. This is a celebratory/appreciation post).

I'll start by being excited that the Supernatural franchise is finally expanding. I liked that we have Loup-Garou, an actual monstrous creature that is a nice change of pace from the monsters we saw in the main show. Learning more about the Men of Letters was also exciting. I wasn't immediately sold on the cast, but they showed promise.

Possibility?

I was reading the tweet that Jensen Ackles posted about how the #save The Winchesters campaign had come to an end and how it was cancelled and they could not find a home for it but at the very end of the tweet he says "Sleep well WinchestersOnCW until we meet again somewhere down the road", so what I think might happen is that because at the end of the last episode John and Mary left is that they will have been gone for some amount of years from lawrenece Kansas but then for some reason their friends back in lawrence need there help so John and Mary come back and get sucked back into hunting. In the unlikley event that the show does come back from the dead it would most likley be a couple of years in the future.

Just finished the show, do you think it could still come back

I just finished the show and I was wondering if anybody thinks it can still come back after being cancelled, because one of the main reasons it was cancelled was because of the hollywood writer strike, but if that ends, maybe another network will pick the show up?

Just sharing the fact that this little show is reaching audiences elsewhere in the world, too. Hoping we get news on the DVD soon.

Blu-ray/DVD release?

Hey, just wondering if there's any official news on a physical home release of the series? A quick eBay search shows me there's some Chinese bootlegs floating around but I'm surprised to find no information at all about an official release.

Even if the show was cancelled and had problems I'd still like to own it as part of my Supernatural collection. If anybody bought a bootleg, is it worth it, or is it bad quality?

The ongoing situation with the Reddit API, accessibility and third party applications.

We've ended our blackout as the actions of over 8000 subs did get the attention of organizations outside of reddit and make the situation much more public.

At this point, reddit has committed to addressing the accessibility issue for groups like r/blind and the like, as well as address moderation tools. What happens with the API pricing is something left up to those developers as they've decided to end of life their products. No subreddit protest can top that.

We're going to keep an eye on it.

In the meantime, we encourage you to let reddit know that you disagree with their planned changes.

There are a few ways you can express your concerns:

Sign this open letter to Reddit.

Share your thoughts on other social media platforms, spreading awareness about the issue.

Leave reddit. Nothing will grab them more than decreased traffic.

If you want to discuss the topic, we recommend r/Save3rdPartyApps.

This subreddit will be joining in on the June 12th-14th protest of Reddit's API changes that will essentially kill all 3rd party Reddit apps.

What's going on?

A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.

On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.

One rather large problem is that the official Reddit app and UI are not ADA compliant and people with visual impairment will not be able to use the site when the 3rd party apps go away on July 1.

Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .

This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.

What's the plan?

On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.

The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.

What can you do as a user?

  • Complain. Message the mods of /r/reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message /u/reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on /r/reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.

  • Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join the coordinated mod effort at /r/ModCoord.

  • Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!

  • Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.

What can you do as a moderator?

Join the coordinated effort over at /r/ModCoord

Theorycrafting: Season 2 onwards

Some random thoughts on where they can take the story assuming they are given the chance to have season 2 (or more).

They already started kind of big with the Akrida, which is a multiversal threat. It was necessary to have one so that it could be linked to the main show, but the con of it is that the threat of the Akrida was not properly built up. They only had 13 episodes, and there were a lot of things not explored fully with the Akrida--have they already destroyed other universes? Did they originally have a queen? How did Joan Hopkins convince the Akrida to make her their queen? Was she already powered up with monster essences before she faced the Akrida? The described ability also did not match what we got on screen as there was not enough room to display their full power. How can they erase an entire universe when they seemed to be physical creatures rather than spiritual or higher-dimensional powerhouses? Anyway, it's unlikely we'll get more information on them as they were already destroyed.

Another challenge for this is that the next theoretical seasons are railroaded into something bigger (as we have seen in the main show, they had to keep coming up with a stronger and/or older threat almost every season). Sure, they can focus on smaller threats and stick to monsters-of-the-week, but I'm not sure that will be the case. When Supernatural did this, it was to set-up a new mytharc (i.e., season 6 and 12) that will eventually lead to a big bad whose plans span multiple seasons.

Assuming the next seasons will choose to double-down on multiversal threats, I think these are some potential narrative arcs they could take

Multiversal Men of Letters

Supernatural kept the Men of Letters in the background. There were few weak attempts to "revive" the organization, but it ultimately stayed defunct. Its legacy members have either died, become renegades (i.e., Magnus), splintered off to new goals (i.e., season 13 "The Thing"), or chose a different path (i.e., Sam and Dean remained hunters; Sam started picking up witchcraft). Since the Men of Letters seems to have a heavier presence on The Winchesters, I'm hoping Monster Club becomes more active in attempting to restore the organization until eventually, they even reach out to MoL from other universes so they could alert each other of existential threats. It doesn't have to be a tight-knit alliance, but at least some form of communication.

Wayward Sisters

We already know Jack restored the multiverse, and we have characters established to travel to other AUs. The dreamwalker Kaia could have her own arc and join the story, which opens up the possibility of having some of the Wayward Sisters continue part of their story through The Winchesters.

Ada and Rowena: New Coven?

It's very interesting to me that Ada has her skillset almost completely tied to plants. She definitely has a lot more room to grow as a druidic witch to differentiate her from the other witches/magic practitioners we have seen. I would be very interested to see if Rowena from this universe can establish a coven that perhaps have their own goals but work with the MoL in case of powerful threats.

The Empty

I think the Empty can still return as a huge threat. It was never really properly quelled in Supernatural. It could easily still harbor hate towards Jack, who not only exploded in the Empty's domain, he now also has the power of Chuck, who frustrated the Empty for meddling with its domain. So it can be the mastermind of a long game as part of its vendetta.

Hi! So, I just started the show…is it me or John does look like young Sam in some shots? I feel so nostalgic watching the show already! Does it get better and better? Sorry I’m so hyped 😅

Second season

Could the writers strike give CW and WB a good reason for canceling the show? Last time this happened lots of good shows were canceled, luckily supernatural survived, but this show isn’t as well reviewed(even though I like it). Do you think it will be given the ax?

I finally watched the whole series and I don't like this cast

I feel like any of these kids could be on any other CW show and no one would bat an eye. They don't feel like they fit into Supernatural. And don't get me started on Mary and John. They not only looked NOTHING like their SPN counterparts, they didn't act anything like them either. The actress for Mary in this is basically Claire Novak 2.0 and spent 90% of the time pouting and scowling while the actor for John was too boy-like and could not pull off hardened veteran if his life depended on it. JDM and Matt Cohen radiated stoic masculinity. This actor didn't have it. He actually reminded me a lot of Thomas Dekker from Secret Circle, just did not work as a male lead. And I feel like the rest of the casting choices screamed "let's make this show as diverse and woke as possible even though this is 1970s Kansas". I could forgive the questionable casting if the acting was stellar, but this was not the case. This felt like a 1:1 rip off of Legacies, which itself was a blatant rip off of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. They even used the same plot device to explain all the "unicorn monsters" coming to Kansas.

The Akrida were also a poor man's rehash of the Leviathan storyline. Their motivation and methods also made zero sense. Actually a lot of this show doesn't make any sense. Is this like the Arrowverse where some people have different versions in other universes who look nothing like them and their backgrounds and social circles are completely different? Because that's what this feels like. And I think they should have just said that in the finale instead of saying that Dean went back in time in an alternate universe to give his family a chance at a happy ending. Because there's that line where Bobby made that metajoke about Samuel Campbell having hair, so I think these people literally are supposed to be past versions of the same characters we know in SPN.

I did enjoy a lot of the one-off MOTW episodes though. I wouldn't be opposed to a Season 2. But I'd be fine if it was cancelled because the ending felt nicely wrapped up.

Just finished the finale and I didn't like...

how Dean doesn't tell them that HE IS THEIR SON. LIKE WHY????? I WAS WAITING FOR IT. The writing was a bit slow at first but it really took off after episode 7. From that episode onwards I have been waiting for John and Mary to know somehow that the Mystery Man is their son. But that didn't happen. Expectations hurts. Other than that loved the season finale. Loved how they tied the loose ends. Loved to see some of the og characters back. Carlos and John carried the season for me. And John sounds so much like Sam. Half of the time I just looked towards the TV and said "Was that Sam? Did Sam just spoke?". But it was John. Drake is a great actor. Wish I could say the same for Meg but she needs to improve. Anyways I hope we get a second season.

Edit: Read the replies and thanks everyone for pointing out that Dean isn't really "their" son. Idk why I didn't think of this earlier. Also that telling this could have affected their future.

A question

Just curious, I partially watched Supernatural (not everything) but I remembered thinking or knowing that John Winchester (the father of Sam and Dean) was not involved with supernatural entities until his wife (and their mother) Mary, was killed by a demon. First, am I correct in that or am I misremembering. In addition, does this show overturn that “canon” if it was true?

I’m just asking not because it’s going to make me watch it or not watch it. I’m not super interested in it because it feels like when networks ran out of ideas or don’t want to try new things they decide ride the “coattails” of their fairly or highly successful show and make a prequel or spinoff and those rarely are made good.
