All I can say is wow. From start to fucking finish, this album's amazing. I love the places it took me to.
Starting with the intro track, "Wake Me Up", I did hear the leak before, and the vocals sounded weird at first, but after a few more listens, they sounded fine. I do love the new additions to the production, like the crazy instrumental breakdown around the end of the song.
"Cry For Me" was such a vibe, I loved it. I couldn't even tell it was produced by Metro.
"I Can't Fucking Sing" is a wild twelve second interlude. I don't know if he reenacted it in the studio or if that's actual footage from backstage at the SoFi concert where he lost his voice, but that shit is haunting.
"Sao Paulo" we know was a single, and I still like the song, but sometimes Anitta's feature takes me out of it. Like, why is she the backing vocal on the bridge? But when Abel's on, it's a vibe. I do also like the new outro that transitions into "Until We're Skin And Bones".
"Baptized In Fear" I saw he posted to his YouTube right before the album came out, so I heard it, but then he deleted it, and it was weird. I still really like the song, but it's be around the bottom of my ranking if I'm being honest. At least instrumentally. Lyrically, it's very interesting, because he's describing contemplating suicide in a bathtub. And the transition into "Open Hearts" is my favorite transition on the whole album.
It's criminal how short "Opening Night" is. I don't know if it's an interlude or not, it doesn't say.
"Reflections Laughing" was good, but I feel like people mainly like it for the Travis Scott feature. To me, there's so much more to the song, it just sounds beautiful overall, and Abel sounds amazing when he sings with a female artist at the same time. Previously, he's done that with Lana Del Rey, Ariana Grande, and Madonna, and here, he does it with Florence Welch. That's something that I'm kind of weird about with this album. It was smart that he kept the features at a minimum, and he mainly had artists that people consider amazing duos between him and them, but then there's some songs where there could've been a feature to make it sound even better, or add to the song. However, I did like the use of the skit in the middle of the track with Chxrry22. I hate whenever artists put random ass skits in the middle of the song and it adds nothing to it ("Calling For You" by Drake and 21 Savage), but here it makes sense. This is probably the phone call with his girl just a few days after the concert where he lost his voice, and then it goes into a deeper pitch because he's drunk and possibly high on something.
The thing I said about the feature being the reason why a song's popular can't be said about the next track however, "Enjoy The Show", which is my favorite song on the whole album. This song features Future, but there's so much more to this track, from the high-pitched vocal sample to Abel's catchy flows throughout the song, that Future being on the song isn't the reason why I remember it. Any random person could hear this album for a second time, and they hear "Reflections Laughing", and they'll go "Oh, that's the song with Travis", and I'm not saying Travis carried, because he didn't, I'm just saying the Travis verse is all most people are probably going to get out of that song. But they hear "Enjoy The Show" and it's probably in their top five on the whole album. Shit, they probably forgot Future was on it because Abel and the beat were so impactful on this song.
"Given Up On Me" is crazy because we heard the beat over a year ago on a Metro Boomin video where he showed us how to make a beat, then we get another Future feature, then we get this random sample, but then we get to this beautiful piano and Abel singing his heart out on it. Honestly, I wished this part was it's own song, because this part alone was just so amazing, I loved it so much. It's probably my second favorite moment on the album. The only thing that could've made it better is a duet with another artist where they go back and forth. I remember I had a list of features that I would've wanted for this album, and the two main ones were Don Toliver and Sabrina Carpenter. Imagine Abel and Sabrina over this fucking beautiful piano.
I'm not going to lie, "I Can't Wait To Get There" reminded me of fucking Silk Sonic, like, I just imagine Bruno Mars on this song, but I understand why he didn't get any features for this song because the lyrics are way too personal. That "Might connect to my fathеr, I don't know that man" line was crazy.
"Timeless" was easily my favorite single to come out of this rollout. There's not much else to say. Abel's verse was too good, his chemistry with Playboi Carti is awesome, and Pharrell's production was also nuts.
"Niagara Falls" is also amazing, and the way it transitions into "Take Me Back To LA" was beautiful. Speaking of which, that was worth the five year wait.
"Big Sleep" gave me the biggest surprise on the whole album, because we finally got the fucking "I Love It When You're Angry" snippet. I legit almost broke my computer when I heard it, I heard one second of the song, and I pressed my space bar to pause the song so hard that the touchpad stopped working for the rest of the album, and I was recording my reaction to keep the memory, so I couldn't restart my computer right away, I had to do it when the album was over. Then it fades into this crazy beat that sounds like the score from "Scarface", and that's because the man that scored "Scarface", Giorgio Moroder, produced this song.
"Give Me Mercy" and "Drive" were my least favorite songs on the album on first listen, but they're already starting to grow on me.
"The Abyss" was beautiful because it was the "Hold My Heart" song from fie years ago, and we got the long-awaited reunion of Starboy and Stargirl, Abel and fucking Lana Del Rey. What's crazy is when she first did a vocal, right before the chorus, I didn't know if it was her, Ariana Grande, or Billie Eilish, but as it kept going, I knew it was Lana. Again, worth the five year wait.
"Red Terror" was so beautiful and the lyrics are hitting me in so many different directions, I had to figure out what he was talking about. Apparently, there was so much violence going on in Ethiopia around the time Ms. Samra was pregnant with Abel, so she moved to Canada so he'd be safe and away from the violence. I was hearing so many people say "Oh, Abel just revealed he has a kid" and "This is Abel's Chromakopia" and I'm like "There's no way that's what he's talking about with this song". Instrumentally and vocally, it's also one of my favorites on the whole album, top three along with the second part of "Given Up On Me" and all of "Enjoy The Show".
"Without A Warning" is what was thought to be titled "The Crowd", and it was believed to be the intro to the album. Honestly, it's again, one of the weaker songs on the album, but it's not bad at all. His voice, lyrics, the crowd cheering for him, and the drums did save the song. I'm wondering who did the drums on this and "Niagara Falls" because Metro's not credited on either of them.
"Hurry Up Tomorrow" is a beautiful way to end this album. And the way the outro transitions into "High For This" lets you know that this is truly the end of The Weeknd.
I also want to talk about the bonus tracks and one other song that isn't on the regular track list:
All I have to say about "Runaway" is HOW THE FUCK IS THIS NOT ON THE REGULAR ALBUM??? "Society" is also pretty good but at least this song fits as a bonus track. "Runaway" however, should've been on the regular version of the fucking album. Also, I'm sad that the original outro where Ms. Samra calls out Abel's name isn't there. (That was unintentional but I'm keeping it in). That's the one thing that I would change about this song. Everything else about it is beautiful, and it feels criminal that this song isn't on Spotify.
I, along with many others, am confused on why the supposed lead single to the album, "Dancing In The Flames", isn't on the album. It was a great single and I think it adds to the idea of "This is the last album by The Weeknd". I've heard it's because of the wildfires in Los Angeles, and if that's the reason why, I respect it, but I at least hope he puts it on a deluxe or something, because the song's great.
Overall, the album's a 10 / 10. I know I said I'd change a few things around, but it's not so bad that it takes any points off the album. But what makes it even more amazing is listening to the album right after listening to "After Hours" and "Dawn FM". Yes, that makes it 58 tracks and over three and a half hours long, but trust me, it's worth it. I couldn't imagine any other collection of songs be a better trilogy than this, and as Abel's last album as "The Weeknd", it truly feels like a proper send off.
The Production sounds a lot like something that would be on Chromakopia, I was just wondering if anyone else noticed it or thought the same
This album has me in the feels
My body, my arms, my legs, all start moving in a rhythm vibing to HUT. It's like heaven listening to it on repeat. Abel puts some magic in his every artwork. I was possessed by the album on the first listen.
Figure in the corner I can't quite seeeeee
ai jokes?
Usually, there would be songs abt drugs etc uk, the normal weeknd persona. But in this album, so far i didn't notice any such songs, the theme is all abt regret and change!. I love this album man.
He describes his experience of this event on Baptized in Fear
All CD’s and vinyl include half of the tracks of HUT and I’m trying to understand why…
I’ll still be keeping my preorder for collector purposes but it’s just really strange that they wouldn’t just press a double LP.
I wanna go to the ATL show but I know the tickets are gonna cost a grip! 😫
What do you guys think when will he retire, like will he still tour 5 yrs later Asking cuz I just got in med school and I don't think I can attend any concert for next 4 to 5 yrs😭
Enjoy the fucking show
AFTER HOURS: - The Abyss / Inferno / The Weeknd’s life exemplified through the 7 deadly sins
2a) Blinding Lights: Jimmy Kimmel (in hell continued) - pride
DAWN FM: - The Void / purgatory / We begin to see a “split” between a continued sinful “Dawn Weeknd or DW” in black with a trimmed beard and “Old Regretful Abel or ORA” as a grey older man also in black (the color black signifying he/they are in limbo)
HURRY UP TOMORROW: - Odyssey / Path to Paradise / The Split between Abel and The Weeknd becomes more defined as we travel down a metaphorical past to address current issues to decide the future…
1a) Twitter Exclusive Visual - BIKA breaks free from within DW
2a) Open Hearts: Jimmy Kimmel - SEW sees a young version of himself, who is mostly likely BIKA but because of the split from DW, his shirt is now white so he’ll be referred to as “Whiteshirt Innocent Kid Abel of WIKA” (also changing his form to appear younger as we travel down a metaphorical memory lane). SEW decides to follow WIKA into a portal of his own psyche/past only to get stuck in the “underground”…
** São Paulo - I believe this MV to not be part of the chronological order of the narrative but more of an addition highlighting the duality of Abel being born and The anti-Abel (aka The Weeknd) being born.
** Timeless - MV is also not part of the chronological order of the narrative but suggests that The Weeknd continues to fall into his old ways vs learn and move on while in purgatory
TO BE CONTINUED….
I see people talking about a deluxe and I'm torn on whether there'll be one or not. There's been a deluxe on every full album since Starboy and songs like In Heaven are still missing, and the connecting Hurry Up Tomorrow to High For This also feels like the "forever purgatory", rather than 'escaping' in In Heaven, but then again, this album being his last as The Weeknd might mean no Deluxe because of it and also the album is so long and impactful it may not need one. Even if one releases, it won't be right after like the After Hours Deluxe, because how impactful it already is & people still need to digest this. if one does come I'm sure we'll get it before the movie within a month after (so by June 16 at the latest) and it will likely include Society, Runaway, In Heaven, and maybe one other track. I don't think DITF will be on it
I have the special edition vinyl and all these mixes on these songs sound so different from digital. Especially with red terror. I think the vinyl version is slightly better. Im amazed this man keeps surprising me😁😁
It really sounds like it when I played the two next to each other 😮
It’s actually insane that after nonstop listening, I can’t pick a favorite. Hell, I can’t even pick a top 10. Lemme try
Wake Me Up, Cry For Me, Baptized in Fear, Open Hearts, Reflections Laughing, Given Up On Me, I Can’t Wait To Get There, Niagara Falls, TMBLA, Give Me Mercy, Drive, The Abyss, Red Terror, Without a Warning, HUT
Oh wow would you look at that more than 10 💀💀
