Hey yall, I’m on watch through number ~5 right now, and one thing I’ve been doing is focusing on small parts of the show and how they come up season to season. Some examples are:
Things like that. I going to brainstorm some more specific themes /character traits to look out for as I watch and figured I would turn to Reddit to see if y’all had any suggestions!
*I'm copying my previous post because I'd love to get more thoughts on this topic!*
The first time I watched the show, I kept thinking that I understand what Patrick gets out of the relationship: he gets access to the Red John case; he gets to use his skills and talents to solve puzzles and help other people in a way that sort of redeems his past mistakes and misdeeds; and, eventually, he gets a partnership with a woman who accepts him as he is, appreciates his intelligence and ability, and sees him as a very flawed but ultimately good person.
But Teresa? What does she get? She closes a lot of cases because of him and his insights, but at the cost of her own credibility and authority, as many characters point out throughout the show; he frequently lies to her, deceives her, and disappears on her without explanation; he cares about her yet puts his own goals and desires first.
However, on second watch, I see how Teresa does change over the course of the show. She comes to trust his methods and even to emulate some of them; that is, he breaks down those walls of hers that insist on law and order over everything else. He challenges her.
I'm still not convinced about what Teresa gains from her relationship with Patrick. What do you think?
At the end of the episode, Lorelai - who had said she'd tell Jane Red John's real name if he showed that Miranda was killed by RJ - goes back on her word. She says that Jason, who participated in Miranda's murder, also knows RJ's name so Jane should question him, but then she shoots Jason and leaves.
Why didn't Jane stop her? Or even say something? I feel like I'm missing something.
I just saw a post from 2020 saying the same thing but I need to bring this back.
I’m rewatching the show after many years because I love it and also because I missed a few episodes the first time, and I just watched Blinking Red Light. The moment I saw Panzer I remembered he was the killer, yet still I felt chills when Jane played that song at his office. The whole episode is so well written, from Jane helping Lisbon to trust her instincts more and gain confidence in herself, to the whole horror movie vibe and tension every time he’s at Panzer’s office, how Panzer outsmarts him only to be played by Jane at Karen’s show. When they focused on the camera’s blinking light, oh boy! Jane proved he was the killer (because the murders would immediately stop after Panzer’s death) and that he was right about Red John. All in just one episode 🤌🏻
What are your favorite episodes up to s4?
Am I the only one who sees a similarity there?
I recently watched Castle and I'm halfway through season 5. I noticed that there are some familiar scenes between Castle and The Mentalist. There are also some similar ideas. I remember that there was a bomb scene similar to what happened in The Mentalist. Also, Castle, who doesn't like guns, killed a man to save Beckett, just like Jane did with Lisbon. There are also many similar episodes. Jane was kidnapped and taken hostage, just like Castle. Castle was framed, just like Lisbon. There are many other things that I don't remember. This is what came to my mind So I think that's one of the reasons why Castle is the favorite show for mentalists and vice versa because everyone loves both shows together
This anniversary rewatch will run daily until February 18, the 10-year anniversary of the Mentalist's series finale.

Day 41 brings us to "Aingavite Baa," which starts with Hightower sending Van Pelt and Cho to help out the Narcotics unit. While they're checking the trash, they encounter a woman with a bloody head injury who can't seem to remember who she is. Jane arrives at the scene and since Lisbon isn't there, he hypnotizes the victim to help her with her pain and question her, finding out that she may have come from a stable. Lisbon arrives, and the team finds a stable with three dead bodies in it.
Title relevance: The investigation leads them to the Shoshone reservation and toxic water. Aingavite baa means "red water" in Shoshone.
Location: Storm River Reservation
Notable guest stars: Wes Studi (from Last of the Mohicans and Dances with Wolves, among many other things), Gil Birmingham (from the Twilight movies), Rosa Arredondo (from So Help Me Todd)

I looked it up. There are 93 actors who appeared in both series. Prior to looking it up, I remembered that Robin Tunney was the main character/patient in episode 1 of House. I know a few other by face, not name, appeared in both. Can you name any?
A year ago, I finally decided to watch the show my dad kept rewatching (he shared some spoilers, like >!Lisbon and Jane ending up together!<). I'm curious so in S1EP6 i decided to look up who Red John was n for the rest of the six seasons I was pissed for spoiling it. I deleted social media to focus on The mentalist and in just 2 week I finished it (touch grass ofc). my favseries oat.
Well Jane made the entry finally 🥇 🎉 🎊 so who can steal your boyfriend but won't?
I’m just about done with the show again and I have to say this rewatch around I don’t think Jane had a better friend (besides his fellow circus people) throughout the series than Abbot. That’s just my opinion though
I’m making my way through season 4 and there is just… no mention of Hightower. That’s weird, right?
It played a massive role that led to Patrick Jane shooting a man who said he was Red John (who turns out not to be) in public in broad daylight. How has this not been mentioned!!
Is she okay? Are they just gonna never mention it again?? The woman walked out of the building with a gun strapped to Jane’s head, can we at least mention that??
It’s weird that it’s just never mentioned!! Am I being LaRoched rn?

Day 40 brings us to "The Red Box," which sends the CBI team to the house of a man who found his daughter's in-home tutor shot dead in the guest house. While the team is talking, the body suddenly starts breathing again, startling everyone. Rigsby explains that it's something called Lazarus syndrome.
Title relevance: During the episode, Jane finds a small red box that held the motive for the murder.
Location: Citrus Heights, CA
Notable guest stars: Kevin Alejandro (Detective Douche from Lucifer!), Alastair Duncan (voice actors from numerous animated shows and video games)

Close to finishing this episode and it’s the first time I’ve seen Jane and Lisbon so confronted with their feelings for each other. I love it!!!
The writing for their love story this episode tugs at my heartstrings so much. I came for Simon Baker, stayed for his antics, and this is just the cherry on top.
I’m also really enjoying Abbott and Cho’s input in this matter hahahaha
Edit: I HAVENT FELT THIS GIDDY IN SUCH A LONG TIME AHHH!!!! (Sorry, Pedro Pascal….) Also a great sign that agreeing to a marriage proposal over the phone might not be the greatest sign….
I could've missed something. Pls lmk if I did.
And yes Point 5 is very serious. I thought of replacing it with Escaping in general(prison, detention, murder). But its not that big of a crime.
Phewww ... Feels like a huge burden has been off of my chest. I am feeling like i have personally avenged someone lol.
What a storyline! Acting was top notch by everyone but Simon Baker totally stole the show. I really need a cool down now before watching the next episode.
I totally loved the entire storyline of Red John and its culmination. I would not change a single thing in it except perhaps the character being in more episodes in previous seasons would be better for buildup.
But still the slow buildup was absolutely amazing. Jane figuring out his real phobia was brilliang storytelling. Now need to rest a little bit.
Thanks u/pikkopots for the RJ template! It was fragile at the top. But I took care and it worked out ok. Next year I will carve the eyes and mouth before carving the outline. Did anyone else make a Red John O’Lantern?
My biggest gripe is red john, and finding out who he is. It Could of been so much bigger and cooler than him.

Day 39 brings us to "Code Red," which opens with Jane getting a mysterious phone call from a woman who says she's been murdered. Jane and Lisbon fly by helicopter (much to Jane's delight) to a biomedical research facility, where they meet the woman who says she's been exposed to a deadly virus in a contained room.
Title relevance: Code Red is the term that the CDCA used for a deadly virus outbreak.
Location: Los Corrados, CA

I finished The Mentalist for the first time in my life, and i feel really gutted. For some reason i have such a strong emotional connection to this show, and i’ve seen quite some shows already.
Patrick Jane and the rest of the crew were amazing. I loved so many things about this show. Like the leather couch, the blue tea cup, the CBI office and Jisbon not to forget.
Like i said before i’ve seen quite some shows already, but The Mentalist caught me off guard, I feel extremely depressed now that the show is over, it’s the worst i’ve felt since 7 years.
Anyway that shows how good this show was, i’m new to this subreddit, so sorry for any mistakes.
One size fits all. 😉
🥹😭
Upon my rewatch with this episode, I realize for the first time that this case truly put Patrick on edge and it's the first time that we see how afraid he is of losing Theresa since they've become a couple. The way that Simon played this was once again so real and he made me feel his every emotion 🥺
We know that he's always been protective of Lisbon, but obviously since becoming a couple that protectiveness has been upgraded and he just can't help himself.. Lol He was so afraid to get or let anyone close to him for so long and now that he finally has a second chance at love it terrifies him to no end to think about anything happening to his girl and who can blame him? No one!
He apologizes for deceiving her during the operation, but said he would do it again. I understand both sides because Lisbon was pissed for what he did by sending her in a different direction, but she knows him just as well as he knows her so she should know that he's always going to look out for her any way he can, but I also get that she's a big girl and can look out for herself as well.
It's just hard like I said because I understand where both are coming from, but I just wanted to share my observation on this ep, it was a good Jisbon centric amidst the whole assassin shit.. 😆
7x10 Tears and Tears and Tears this whole episode. It’s taken me over 12 hours to try and watch this episode.
!Watching Cho make the call to vegas next of kin, had me pausing multiple times just to cry. respectfully this emotion that’s COMING FROM CHO made me loose it…!<
