One of the fun facts about Beck is that he's recorded more unreleased albums than most people. In 2003, he planned on recording an album of garage rock tunes because it was a big thing back then. He scrapped it in favor of returning to the Dust Brothers for the commercially successful Guero.
Fast forward to the Ohio Players, Beck basically did a whole album of songs with Dan and Patrick. I have to say as a diehard Beck fan, that I love this but Beck's melodies sound different than classic Black Keys.
A lot of the la las and nah nahs are also present on Guero on songs like E-Pro and Rental Car and I'm kinda reminded of those types of songs for this album.
The only annoying thing for me is that Beck likes following trends in pop music so he's now doing ultra short tunes that are basically just hooks. So it's kind of a combination of that, Guero and the garage rock approach of the Black Keys.
I do like the album quite a bit but I think what does it injustice is crummy production and the shortness of the tunes. Melodically, it's very nice (even Beautiful People has good verses but a mindless chorus).
"I wanted [to create something] that would be able to hang up there with Brothers and El Camino. We ended up working very hard on this album and we spent more time in the studio than we did on Brothers, El Camino and Turn Blue combined. I think we were in the studio like 150 days."
When Chuck asked him if he thinks he accomplished his goal with Ohio Players, Carney wasn't quick to pat himself on the back.
"Relevance is hard to define clearly," he said. "For me, the meaning of it is, I wanted something that resonated with people who like the type of music we make and that isn't just like, you know, deep cuts or fan-only stuff."
Carney did eventually say he thinks Ohio Players lives up to what he set out to do.
"I'm very proud of it."

Subheadlining spot out in Arizona!
It’s not a bad song. I think the only thing I don’t like about Ohio Players is the over-collaboration.
Like having maybe 1 or 2 songs with another artist is fine but more than that just doesn’t feel like a Black Keys record. I liked some of the songs on there but I hope that if they make an album after this one it’ll just be Dan and Pat.
is the 10th anniversary remastered album no longer showing on spotify for anyone else? I listened to the Portland live performances of Thickfreakness and Girl is On My Mind daily :( any reason why it was removed?
Hi! I have a physical copy of Richard Swift's posthumous album (The Hex) and the credits say that "Little Danny Horseback" played fuzz guitar on Broken Finger Blues and Selfishmath. I think it's a joke pseudonym for Dan, but I haven't been able to find much information online; is it really Dan?
I bought the CD box set of the 10th anniversary edition of El camino. In the band's promotional images it was indicated that it would come with a lithograph, but mine didn't. I would like to know if anyone here purchased this item, and if it came with the lithograph?
Ik alot of people dislike but I fw it so much
I’m playing this at a recital with one of my students and he’s singing. Trying to get him the right lyrics.
Especially the chorus.
“Ain’t no guard in my house”
“Ain’t no guarding my high”
“Ain’t no gold in my house”
And I feel like one source said “no gun”….
Thanks 🤘🏼
I listen to The Black Keys but I don’t keep up to date with much of anything. Thought I would go through their albums today and found Ohio Player. Started listening and heard Beck in Paper Crown and confirmed that it is him by checking the credits.
Looks like Beck contributed a bit to that album.
Two of my favorite artists collaborating!
I guess if you only have one or a few of the songs downloaded the wood trim van is photoshopped out. You can this plain grey one in the original vaguely behind the main van. Anyone else get this?
Working on an album that takes some heavy inspiration by early The Black Keys and other fuzzy blues rock bands. Here’s a small piece of this song, still gotta add some vocals.

I feel like the fire walk me music video is 100 percent a contented for best music video even though it's not labeled as one. The way that the camera and lights are never focused on the dancer, just the chair the whole video is just 🤌, really tasteful
Keeps the lighthearted aspect that the keys have had for most of their music videos...obviously taking inspiration from lonely boy
From the way he's dressed, I like to think that it's some killer on death row and as he reaches his final minutes he rocks out before lights out. That's a dark tone but I think it contrasts well with the lightheartedness of the song and the dancing.
So for the trophy edition, I've been listening to that a lot on spotify, and the songs are finally hitting right! So good! Even the 2 mentioned above are fantastic until the rap section. Such a good album ruined by those 2 sections of 2 songs. It'll probably be mostly a spotify album for me rather than listening on my vinyl since I can skip those 2 songs.
I feel like you don’t see many of these signed!
I know Ohio Players has gotten a lot of mixed reviews over the past few months, but I have absolutely been loving Mi Tormenta (I’ve probably listened to it 20 times in the past couple of days). It’s giving me a little bit of an El Camino vibe and I’m loving the DannyLux feature. Thoughts??
Playing NHL 25 and I was reminded about this song. I thought I was going to love this song until the rapping started. I love rap too, but idk just cringe. Prob not an original opinion or anything, but I had to say it because I really love the beginning.
Did anyone get listen to the band Black Box Revelation back in like 2010/1011?

Should definately hold some appeal here
Little late to the party but I wanted to talk about the new song because I just know you all care so much right?!
At first listen, I loved the instrumentation a lot, but I was mixed on the vocals. I loved the grittyness of Dan's voice, it reminded me of his older style, but like a lot of songs on ohio players, I was struggling to understand some of the words in places because of the mixing.
Now that it's been a couple of days, I really really like it. I had to look up the lyrics to get some parts but it's a vibe once you get it.
People were complaining about the length which I understand, i would have liked it if it were longer but I don't think it takes away from the song. It's only upsetting because ohio players has a lot of shorter songs. Other than that, great song!
I only wish the organ that plays in the beginning of the music video would've made it on the song
Just seen this. Film was very good, (obviously) TBK heavy soundtrack. Q&A with director said the talks to get on to streaming platforms are ongoing, there is hope!
See it when you can, not bad.

I went to the "America Loves Crypto" show yesterday, and I must say that I was disappointed. Honestly, what did I expect going to it, though.
The issues were with the crypto people, not Dan or Pat. It was labeled as an "intimate experience" with "limited capacity" and food and drinks.
Here's how it went down.
I started standing outside of the Civic theatre at 2:30. At around 4:30, the lines started to form. I RSVPed, but people with "crypto wallets" got to go in first. I believe I was #484 of 500 allowed in, yet I was one of the first there. A lot of people were turned away, I assume by the long line behind me. The food was aluminum tins of grilled cheese. Because I was in the tailend part of the group, I ended up on a high balcony far away with the band facing away from me, blocked by speakers with giant bright lights shining in my face.
I sat in my seat at 5:54 PM, and we got a fabulous crypto lecture until 6:30. TBK came on at 7:00 and played a nice 40 minute set, with audience memebers yelling at Dan and Pat to "turn around and turn off the lights" in between songs. It's not their fault, and it was disrespectful for the people around me to shout at them, as annoying as it was.
So yeah, it's my fault for thinking this "intimate experience" was worth driving 12 hours round trip.
Just my thoughts, I may have an unpopular opinion.
Edit: I was also disappointed that they played no Ohio Players songs.
I’m not a “crypto bro” as one posters who accused the people on the stage of being. I do not own crypto. I don’t know a godamn fucking thing about it. I got a text from a friend about an NFT ticket. I had no clue they sent an e-Mail to people with an NFT you had to accept by downloading a wallet. (The app has now been deleted). My buddy who I went with also does not own crypto or do NFTs. He also didn’t hit the RSVP but we got him on the “stage” with his clever thinking.
The whole thing was weird as hell. I’ve been to over 1,000 concerts in my life and I’ve never seen the set up like this. For us on the stage - it was fucking sick. We were inches from the band, there wasn’t a real barricade and the sound was pretty good. It was a tight 45 minute, 11 song set. No bullshit filler. Word is that 200 of us where on the stage and they would let 300 in the balcony (it has to have more seats then that) but a buddy who drove two hours got there about five minutes after they started and was turned away because they where “closed”. When he asked if it was at capacity he was told again they were closed. Not sure what that’s all about.
The people in the balcony got fucked. It was like going to see Springsteen and having “rear view” seats but the difference is the stage is close to those seats and they play with a circle stage. Dan knowledge the balcony 2-3 but never played to them. I had two friends up there and they both said they enjoyed and they could hear it well.
The speakers were rough, it was pretty cringeworthy. They never mentioned Brown or Moreno. But as the luming feeling we all know who the speakers are for. I still have no fucking clue how or what crypto does and the little things they did say seems like hogwash. I’m not sure if the campaign decided to set the stage up like this or cap it at 500 people (but I do not believe 500 people attended) was a head scratcher. Having to sign up, then confirm an RSVP then have an NFT and be one of the first 200 people in was totally fucking stupid. I can’t speak to the food because all I saw as salad and fries. But I believe there was more. I wasn’t allowed to bring even a water into the seating / standing area. OH! And you couldn’t leave the auditorium once you entered - even for the restroom. It didn’t feel like I was held hostage but I guess I kind of was. Totally bonkers bullshit.
It was a fun show, it was good, it was a unique but weird setup.
Lastly, do Pat and Dan even like each other anymore? It sure was a vibe that they only have a working relationship now-a-days. And one final thing, it did not seem like most people around us are crazy about crypto, NFT or Moreno. This whole thing is odd. At least they were generous to meet us outside afterwards.
That's all I gotta say after witnessing the recent concert footage.
I don't know any recent artists that have a similar sound, I want something that sounds like what the black pistol fire sounds to the white stripes and I'd rather burst my ear drums than listen to the blue stones, so what y'all got?!
The bass on both these songs is so dope, I love how it's more "out" in a sense, and it doesn't take away from the music, makes me wonder how well it'd work with an older track like "I got mine"
Entire lower level is closed off. Getting to watch the back of their heads lol. Balcony is chanting in unison "turn those lights off" because the spotlights are blinding us.
