Place for technicians to ask other technicians questions or related. Tools needed for jobs. This is a place for people who have the basic knowledge and need a helping hand. There are other websites for this such as IATN and Identifix which require a paid subscription. I think there are enough technicians on Reddit to make something real happen here without the paid subscription.

anything that might be happening
at the same time whether you

you.

If you are creating a thread about

If/when the problem is repaired,
please update your post with an
edit stating what the problem
actually was, what method was
used to find it (when applicable),
and what was done to repair it.

Need help with my final project!

Hi friends,
I am doing the final course in which requires me to interview at least 3 people. And because of the COVID situation I could not do it offline, my topic is about "how could a technician help their customers to fix their problem via Video call effectively?". I need to interview 3 people that have a background in tech that help people through customer service and 2 people that used to call for help from tech companies.
DM me if you are willing to help. I am much appreciated. Stay safe.

Gonna burn this Chevy to the ground.

2012 Chevy Malibu LT, 2.4L, 6spd auto. I have a traction light and service esp/traction in dic.

All codes in EBCM. No other modules. Code C0561 invalid serial data.

C/s codes only set turning right. No other issues complaints. Ok checked it out no codes in PCSM. BCM and misc connectors filled with dielectric grease. No wire/connector issues I could see. So loaded parts cannon threw a lower column at it.(motor, SAS) Code changed from C0561 to U2143 lost comm with SAS. Wiring looks good still. Data comms look good. I can not find a straight through diag tree in ShopKey, just keeps sending me in circles.

Any thoughts or ideas. Need more info I'll give you everything I got and then some. Want/need scanner live data I'll give you anything. Just want this car gone.

Edit- reman ps module fixed issue

What can I do about this?

Independent tech place took in my laptop charged me £40 and didn’t fix it?

Hello

Basically the hinge on my laptop broke I took it into this place called DOT - Den of Tech I asked them to fix it I didn’t know what was wrong with it, because I’m not a technician He looked it over and said £40 I was like ok yh whatever sure, because I thought he’d fully fix it, he said the hinge was broken and he’d order in new ones and fix them on Safe you’d think Nope My mum goes to pick it up with my dad for me, and he says it’s not ready and cos of that he’d drop it of He drops it off to my house because the pandemic Mum shows me and he didn’t put new hinges on, weird right? I look it over, and everything is half hazardly glued on it looks absolutely AWFUL I mean TERRIBLE so I give them a shit review on Facebook, because she’s obviously not actually ordered in the hinge, he’s just gone n glued it on because he didn’t do it And I paid £40, for that???? My family, and I, we do not have a lot of money. £40 to me is like £200 to someone else say. And he tells me “you should’ve told me how bad it was broken” like what? I didn’t know what was wrong I just asked him to fix it, he put the price on it and diagnosed the problem, he could’ve charged more we would’ve paid for it it’s fine!

But what’s happened is that it’s been 2 days and it’s all come unglued. I’m so stressed I have to do college work to get my grades for uni because of this pandemic. I think it’s an independent company. I told him it’s come unglued and I want my money back. It’s like stressing me out so much. Is there anything I can do??

the laptop after he glued it (it looks so bad and it’s all come apart)

Specialty Tools

Okay everyone, I'm looking for feedback from the automotive technicians of the world. The sun is setting on the age of shade tree mechanics.

My question is this: What are the tools you need to "make the job." I know we have all sorts of specific seal drifts and other hand tools but many of the crafty technicians out there have found legitimate ways to "make it work."

Which tools do you need to perform specific jobs. Like, "I'm not even going to attempt this without ..." Or, "This job cannot be done without ..."

What are you putting in your specialty shop without fail?
Thanks for the feedback, Nick

In home appliance repair for 14yrs, looking for a good flashlight

I see you're auto techs; hopefully you can help me out or point me in the right direction.

I need a good flashlight for repairing laundry and kitchen appliances, but also with a tight, bright beam for spotting house numbers while I drive by on the street & rural mailboxes alike. Sunset here is 4:40pm; thanks for nothing Daylight Savings Time. My fortysomething eyeballs need a solution.

TL;DR What's your favorite flashlight?

Security systems technician

I am almost done my schooling for SST and I’m aware it’s not a very popular job so I am wondering if anyone has ever worked with Alarm/Access control/Extra low voltage (Canadian under 20V)systems and if you have any advice for someone just starting in the industry. Cheers.

"Jargon" about sizes of earphone jacks?

So ok help me out here, Professional Technicians of Reddit.

So my brother and I had a almost heated discussion about earphone jacks that "he" said there are common jargon such as 3.0mm Jack that is literally a 3.5mm Jack or 2.55mm Jack that is equivalent to 3.0mm Jack (something like that....) So anyways, can someone educate me a little bit out of this "jargon" stuff you technicians use in earphone jacks or better tell me if this statement of "jargon" of 3.0mm jack = 3.5mm jack actually real.........

Anyways he said, he got his knowledge from his Universities Proffesor that graduated in Technicians or whatever. Ples give me enlightenment kind sirs.

What's your favorite way of dealing with whiny, entitled clients?

This is more of a soft skills question, but I think it applies since when you're a tech often part of the job is dealing with idiots, er, I mean customers. If not, feel free to remove it.

Here are some of my favorite examples of what I mean, in ascending order of entitlement:

"Hey, since you're already here, can you also look at X, Y, and Z?" (when they could have easily told us that beforehand so we could have budgeted the time for it.)

"Why doesn't this new widget have every single amazingly high tech feature?!" (when they clearly chose the absolute cheapest products and services your company offers.)

"We just got done remodeling the building and now none of YOUR stuff works/YOUR equipment is junk! Why am I getting false alarms?!" (after letting some other contractor hack wires, remove devices, or just demolish half the damn building without asking anyone ahead of time if doing so would, I dunno, cause problems?)

And the ever popular, "What do you mean this is billable?! I HAVE A SeRvIcE AgReEmEnT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" (when it was made abundantly clear that it does not cover equipment out of warranty, damage by you, your staff, or your customers, replacement of consumables like batteries, or acts of god like lightning or flooding when you signed the damn thing.)

I hope I get some traction on this, since I've got nowhere else to post it! Cheers!

Noob question about tools and work

About to start as a lube tech and I'm confused about something. When the employer has you bring your own tools, do techs bring back and forth their tools from work and home or do they just end up having get a second set for work? I was thinking if I should get myself one of those rolling tool boxes that look like luggage bags but I'm not sure if that's ok. I was just asked if I had my own tools and a tool chest but I don't know if I'm supposed to leave my tools at work. Sorry for the dumb question

Tire technicians, how long did it take you to learn the commercial side of it?

I started last September with no knowledge of tires or vehicles at all and it's 9 or 10 months later I've learned passenger light truck and medium truck, I'm now in a service truck and have my daily yards and do service calls. We're understaffed, plus we are the only tire company that does mobile press service in Manitoba. Well the one and only press guy quit in a crazy way so they designated me to be the next guy to learn and operate the press truck and trailer. Honestly I had nothing before tires no worthy experience only crap job after crap job and had 0 self respect. Since I started tires I'm proving my worth to myself every day, Every day I learn new stuff now I just have to work at being faster. I started in September at $13.50 and am now over $17 with a truck and phone to take home and all the overtime I can handle so its kinda like making 20 am hour at a regular job. I'm stressed out currently being understaffed, working the shop and learning the press and having time to do my yards and any service calls but I love learning this trade. I wanna know how long it took you guys to get raises and also if you do commercial tires just any random tips you've learned through the years. One thing I need more experience on is the rings on forklift tires. I need some good tips lol for some reason it's easier for me to put them on and take them off with the solid tire press, but on regular ones with tubes I just still gotta find my Ry them with the rings. I appreciate all your comments on your experiences hope I get some replies. I think for most guys that I've met, once you've done tires for a few years it will always be a part of you. Again I appreciate all the tips and advice and your own personal experiences. I had a good couple guys train me to get this far so fast but I had a scare last week at one of my yards (a scrap yard), where their yard truck which they basically refused to let me put decent tires on a drive exploded as I was walking towards it. It really Got me thinking about everything when you get a scare like that and I wanna know what everyone thinks.

Thanks guys! Sorry for the rambling just really considering this as a career and wanna hear your stuff!

Scrap or pay

I have been having trouble with a 99' Ford Taurus and the power steering has failed a lot and destroyed 3 pumps. the last time leaked everywhere, shredded the belt, and drained all coolant. No idea where the coolant leaked from. It has 170,000 miles, goes through oil in half the typical time. Is it worth the fix or should i just go for a newer car?
