For whatever reason that is unimportant at the moment, EPs are often overlooked when it comes to year-end conversations. Let’s take a few moments to acknowledge some of the finer specimens from 2024.
I really, really love this band. Ben can shred with the best of them, Sanjay is the most versatile guitarist in the genre, and u/LeeGreylotus has actually changed my mind on clean vocals. But there’s more to it for me.
The closing track on Dawnfall (Azure Rain) is about the acceptance of imperfection (a grey lotus, if you will), and here we have EP named after the term for intense fear of imperfection. This dichotomy/juxtaposition is intriguing and just kicks my brain into a higher gear when I listen. And what I hear is absolutely outstanding.
Check this band out if you haven’t. And sell me your copy of Dawnfall on vinyl if you want to. :)
Here are others that I really enjoyed this year, but I will spare you my fawning.
Disentomb - Nothing Above
Entheos - An End to Everything
Alluvial - Death is But a Door
What were your faves?
What the fuck is that sound in The Bell by Defeated Sanity at 2:00
To me, this album sounds like what would happen if modern tech death bands listened to as much Demilich as they did Necrophagist and it's a really badass take on the sound. My only complaint is the drum machine, but that's because I'm personally a stickler for real drums, I can very much see the case that they add to a robotic or alien feel to the album.
This and “Exogalactic” are great stoned
Hey all. Do you have any recs for tech death with symphonic/orchestral elements? Stuff similar to :
Spawn of Possession- Apparition
Fleshgod Apocalypse : The Hypocrisy
Thanks in advance for any replies!
He really is an exceptional talent. I don’t think he fluffs a beat once in this performance, apart the end when the kit starts falling to bits 😂 but such a tight performance. Amazing.
