Pharmacy work requires its own special laws and regulations and with it comes so many wonderful problems.
How many times do you find yourself saying any of these: - Your insurance sets the price - That is your medical card, not your prescription card - Your prescription is expired ... Yes even though you still have refills
If so this is the place to be!
1) NO violations of HIPAA - anyone doing this will be banned without warning
2) Are you a patient or someone else who wants to voice their complaint about your local pharmacy? This is not the correct place for it. Please direct those posts to /r/TalesFromTheCustomer.
3) If you have a specific question then those are more suited for /r/Pharmacy than here. If posting there then get straight to the question without too much unneeded information. Any posts containing either of these will be removed.
4) Images are okay but an accompanying story must appear in the comments
5) Anything read here should not be taken as any type of medical advice. If you are searching for specific medical advice then Reddit is not the place to look for it. Please direct yourself to a medical professional such as your local pharmacist, doctor, or provider.
6) Questions regarding Pharmacy Technicians can also be found in /r/PharmacyTechnician
7) If it isn't a tale then it doesn't belong here and will be removed
(To the tune of "Just Keep Swimming" in "Finding Nemo")

My sincerest thoughts and prayers to the lady on the phone
I'm a pharmacist at a grocery store in an affluent area close to several shops and restaurants. There are many apartments within walking distance, one being directly above the store. There is also a retirement home just down the block. Because of this, my pharmacy tends to get a lot of older patients shopping and filling Rxs. This one lady in particular appears to be in her 80's and usually only shops in the store. As far as I know we haven't filled any Rxs for her, but she does frequently ask us where things are in the Health and Beauty section.
A couple days ago this same lady comes in and I see her shopping on the first aid aisle. She grabs whatever she's looking for and comes up to the counter to ask a question. She approaches my tech and asks her where the eye drops are. She then proceeds to take out a green box claiming that she doesn't want "these" eye drops anymore because they burn. I ask her if I could see the product to ensure she doesn't get the same thing again. The first thing I notice is that it's in Swedish and in large letters says "Laxoberal 7.5mg/ml." I had not seen this product before and thought the packaging looked a lot like Dulcolax. At the very top it says 'orala droppar' which I surmised to mean oral dropper. I pull up google translate to confirm my suspicion and sure enough it's an oral laxative.
Confused, my tech asks where she got the product. The lady didn't know, but had been using it as an eye drop. I told her to immediately stop using the product and let her know its a laxative. She gasped in surprise and said "Oh my! I thought it was the same as this!" and proceeds to take out a bottle of Refresh Tears. She laughs a bit and asks if I could throw it away for her. My tech then shows her the eye drops she wants and she leaves. That was a weird day.
Here’s my craziest phone call of the day Me: Hello can I help you? Pt: yes my rx number isn’t working. Could you try it for me? Me: sure what is it? Pt: (gives me rx number which isn’t found in the system) Me: ok sir I can’t find your rx in the system. You’re sure you got it from our pharmacy? Can you tell me the date on the bottle?? Pt: yeah it’s from y’all. Now I don’t take this medication all the time and it’s from a while back Me: thinking maybe it’s from last year or something Pt: ok all it says is “discard after August 2016” Me: sir, if this is from 2016, this rx doesn’t exist anymore. That from 8 years ago. If you’re supposed to still be on it, call the doctor.
Y’all I can’t believe there’s this much dumbness in the world
also idk how important this info is, but it was a remote processing tech who left the long note about fda-approved dosings

dead skin mask (by slayer) was my go-to during my test-out 😌
solid 110bpm, the “impending doom” vibe of the song puts you in the zone, and it’s super easy to memorise and follow especially if you play guitar and/or are musically literate.
what’s everyone’s go-to song (and why)?

My friend and I were debating whether it should be filled or not Personally, I would dispense it but my friend thinks there might be an issue because the patient has cirrhosis and that could be a contraindication with the prescribed drug. I’m curious to know what you think? I'm sorry if this post isn’t allowed here. I just wasn’t sure where else to post it

This happened once before and it was well over a year before we got help. I’m not sure I’m capable of surviving this again. When is the mental and physical cost just too much

Phone rings, my tech tells me she called before and was very rude, she's not talking to her. I take the phone, and a robotic voice announces "her"self that "she" is calling from "needle", and asks if I have Adderall five migam (sic) immediate release in stock.
I ask it who the provider is, she gives me a name of a doctor I've never heard of.
"Where are you located?"
"We are in the area. Do you have Adderall five migam immediate release in stock?"
Yeah, but what area, they won't say. Caller ID is from Utah, for what that's worth, and we're in New York State.
I said "Are you a human being or a bot?"
"I assure you I am human, I apologize if I sound robotic. Do you have Adderall five migam immediate release in stock?"
Sure, and I've got a bridge to sell you if you believe that. It's on the East River.
"What's the provider's phone number?"
"I am not authorized to tell you that. Do you have Adderall five migam immediate release in stock?"
Now I may or may not tell this to a human, once I'm sure they're legit and not about to come in and point a gun in my face. Damned if I'm going to tell a bot, though.
I said "I am not authorized to tell you that." Love sending their own words back at them.
It thanked me for my time and hung up.
So I investigated and discovered that "needle" is a website that makes robocalls (although they don't specifically disclose this on the website itself) charging a dollar each to the customer for calling around and finding rare medications. I don't discuss my C-II stock with end users, though. If the doctor wants to call themselves and ask, I'll maybe tell them. There's no doctor in my area with that name, though, which means that if someone's calling in a C-II from Canton, Ohio or Midlothian, VA, it's probably a telemedicine visit for a patient that isn't mine, and that is a can of worms I don't want to open.
Edit to add: I went back and forth with it a couple times asking to speak to a human being, and that didn't get me anywhere. I don't even know if they have any actual humans working for them beyond the people who did the programming.

Long story short, one of the pharmacists that I work with is causing a lot of problems both for me and for the pharmacy. The biggest issue being that wait times are through the roof, and it’s clear where the workflow breakdown is happening. This pharmacist micromanages everyone else and it keeps them from doing their own job, which they already struggle with because they will check something multiple times, turn to micromanage us, and then check the same thing multiple times again. I understand that it’s their license and thoroughness is not a bad thing, but this level seems excessive and the lack of trust in everyone else’s abilities is disheartening.
When patients complained and the staff brought the matter to the owner, who then made this pharmacist aware of there being a workflow issue, things seemed okay. The pharmacist claimed they had no clue that there was an issue with the wait times or the workflow (this was a red flag for me but I was willing to hold judgment), but they had some ideas to improve the situation.
I don’t want to get into specific examples, but their behaviour quickly got out of control. The pharmacist confronted the staff and insisted that they had done nothing wrong, everything was everyone else’s fault so we were the ones who needed to change, and spent several hours attacking the character of the rest of the staff. Then they turned around and said that we were the ones being disrespectful and making personal attacks. I was accused of multiple things that I never did or said, all while being told how unprofessional I was and how I was a terrible person. I don’t know what more I could have done to salvage the situation other than immediately stopping the conversation and asking for a meeting to be held with everyone present.
I’ve spoken with the necessary people to try to address this, but I don’t think this sort of situation is salvageable. The refusal to have any sort of accountability and the blatant lying to avoid fault and shift blame seems to be a pervasive issue with this pharmacist that has reached a head. I want there to be a solution to this that doesn’t result in a firing of anyone, but at the same time I don’t see how an issue like this can be resolved amicably.
