When I was a young adult, I lived in Taipei with my expat family (I'm American). I took university classes at National Taiwan U and had a number of Taiwanese and expat friends. I lived in Tienmu. My husband travelled to Taiwan frequently for work (mostly Kaohsiung, but occasionally Taipei) but stopped pre-Covid.
However, I have not been in Taiwan for almost 20 years and my husband and I are taking our 12 year old son there for his first time over the Christmas/New Year break. Needless to say, I assume a lot of my go-tos are gone.
So, what are the must sees? We are planning the tourist things that we both enjoy -- the National Palace Museum, the Folk Museum in Beitou, the Raohe night market, the tea plantations in Maokong, probably dumplings at the Grand Hotel. We will be coming to Taiwan after two weeks in Japan, if that's necessary context.
Hi everyone!
I’m a 22-year-old guy currently living and studying in Taiwan and looking for skincare clinics that can treat acne scars, pits, and hyperpigmentation. My budget is around 15,000 NTD, so I’d love to hear about any affordable yet effective clinics that you’ve tried or heard of.
To give you a bit of background:
My main concerns are acne scars, pits, and hyperpigmentation.
I’m hoping to find a clinic that offers treatments like microneedling, chemical peels, or laser therapy within my budget.
If possible, I’d prefer clinics that can communicate in English (It's okay if they can't, I'll take my boyfriend there) and don't scam (My friend told me that these clinics usually add treatments to increase the bill that I don't really need)
I’d appreciate any recommendations, whether it’s personal experiences or places you’ve heard good things about. Bonus points if the clinic is in Hsinchu or Taipei, but I’m open to traveling a bit for good quality care.
I can host this week. Let’s chat…
I’m booked on a flight that lands at TPE around 6am. I’m at a conference in Xinyi at 9am. Options for a shower and change of clothes?
Yeah - it’s a corporate travel warrior thing, don’t tell me I should book a day earlier, it literally was not an option due to flight options. At least my work sprung for a premium economy seat.
I see from extensive googling that there is one shower available on arrival at TPE. Any other options/advice? I don’t have time to get into my hotel and shower and then get to my event.
Thanks for help in advance while I serve my bosses and deliver results.
I will visit Taiwan (Mainly Taipei for this trip) for the fifth time from January to February 2025. I've already explored most tourist attractions and visited nearly every night market.
Could you recommend some lovely places to check out? I love eating, going out, shopping, and doing things spontaneously.
I cannot speak mandarin but the handy phone can help me with translation.
Thanks in advance
For any teachers here, just wondering what your recommendations are for companies/schools in Taipei that focus on Adults ESL? I’ve taught adults in Shanghai, Taipei (Kojen), and California. Thanks for your suggestions.
Hello everyone!
I'll be flying over to Taiwan from Germany at the end of the month, and have a bunch of questions and have no one to ask; so I thought here would be a good start. :)
Currently, I'm about to graduate from university, and I'm planning on doing my graduation project about shooting a documentary in Taiwan (specifically Taipei, but willing to travel), about the xiao-long-bao;s and the surrounding culture. I'm fascinated by how great this form of food is, and thought where better I could learn, than Taiwan!
So basically I just bought a plane ticket to Taipei, booked a place to stay for a couple of weeks and planning to learn and figure out as I go, but of course, I'm a bit lost currently ... If you have any recommendations regarding places to go I would appreciate, or any kind of tips, or information that you might think would be beneficial for this adventure I'm about to set on.
Also, since I'll be arriving knowing no one in the country, if any of you would be willing to meet for a snack or a drink, I'd be so happy to get to see the country from the perspective of someone who lives there :)
Looking forward to any kind of input, and hope to meet some great people on the road!
Wish you all an amazing week ahead.
EDIT: changed the word "Bao" to "xiao-long-bao"
hii i’m a second year asian australian uni student who will be visiting taiwan from this wed to next saturday 4/12-13/12

Hey all,
I'm in Taipei for the next few days. I'd looked at some past Reddit posts about nightlife/bars/etc. but wanted to ask if there's any in particular you'd recommend during the week.
Not necessarily looking to go clubbing, but I've been mostly sightseeing since getting here and would like to meet some people and just chill.
Thanks :)
Where can I buy a Mahjong set in Taipei?
I like spicy food, breakfast foods, bread/rice, not so much noodles but… I haven’t had beef noodle soup here which feels like I’m breaking the law or something, so if you have a good noodle place to recommend, I would be willing to check it out. I don’t like flat thin noodles, but I am ok with thicker noodles (like the ones typically used in dan dan mian). Also haven’t had Lu rou fan either
Budget: pls keep it nice, I’m a student
Location: am ok with anywhere in Taipei, but probably not as far as Raohe or Beitou
Edit: also taking recs for a fruit tea shop because I don’t like milk tea / boba
This is going to be my very first New Year's Eve in Taipei, and I heard the city hall area, Taipei 101 area will be crowded and that it is not convenient to watch the fireworks.
All I can think about is Babylon as the view is pretty great, but do you have any other recommendations, suggestions just in case babylon is too full?
The plan would be to get drinks and go party after
Thanks everyone
Hello friends, how does one attend the New Year's Eve party in Taipei at Taipei City Hall? https://2025newyear.travel.taipei/
There appears to be various celebrations and events going on at Taipei City Hall, but are there tickets and/or other things that we would need to book in order to attend? If it's already sold out, are there other large parties or events we might be able to participate in?
Hi all,
I booked myself a 2.5-day layover in Taipei on the way from Sydney to Amsterdam, end of May / beginning of June. What does the reddit brains trust recommend for me for this limited time in terms of:
? Thanks so much!
I want to know is citizenship possible for me? American citizen and my parents aren't Taiwanese, age 40. I also have APRC, and I'm in fluent Mandarin.
I have seen some new laws for citizenship applicants. Such as NWOHR, but it's only for people with Taiwanese parents if I recall correctly.
Quincy Davis renounced his citizenship for Taiwan but his reasoning is different than mine. Used his example because we're both African Americans.
Tl/dr - Is Taiwanes citizenship still only possible by renouncing your nationality if your parents aren't Taiwanese? Or has any new laws come into effect that changed this?
I had a small conversation with a Taiwanese lawyer and he was very confused so I will look for another. Also I'm posting here because Taiwan mods took it down.
Any particular products you would recommend? Where should I buy them?
I have 99 ranch market back home in USA but was wondering if there is anything I can only get here. I like spicy.
My friend back home is from Chongqing just sent me a video of his soup using a base he bought back home in China. I want to bring something back to share with him as well.
Hi. I am Tyrone, 16 yo now. I am kinda tired of meeting the same people now. Is there any foreign high school students wanna be friends or sth?
Dance Soul is great and I’ve gone a couple of times, but they unfortunately don’t offer any house classes.
Anyone know a place that teaches house?
Heard about this place but don’t see a lot of info about it so wonder if anyone visited there before?
If yes, do y’all have any food recs :D
I used to live in Taipei about 10 years ago. I've done all the touristy things back then. My friend and I have decided to go back in January to visit our friends. Do you all have any recommendations for me on any new places I should visit or restaurants to eat at? I love any suggestions on places to sightsee, restaurants, desserts, boba shops, or bars to visit.
