TRT in winter??

I'm curious...are sections of the trail hikable during winter? Obviously it depends on how much snow Tahoe gets. I'm wanting to get in good/better condition for a thru hike this next summer. I guess I am curious if the trail is passible in an average or light snow year. Just thought it would be fun to sneak in some day hikes or possibly an overnighter. If not, I'll look at some lower elevation options. Just thought it would be worth asking. Thanks.

I finally finished my video about my thru-hike of the TRT last June, I thought it might be helpful for some of you planning your trips or even those who have already completed it. Happy trails!

Flying in

Hey everyone, I’m looking at doing the TRT next year. Just a couple questions…

  1. What is the best place to fly into to get to a starting point for the TRT? I’m from Missouri so I’m not overly familiar with the area.
  2. I’m wanting to get the hardest portion of the trail done early so I can enjoy more time at the end when I’m a little more tired, so where would you recommend I start, and which direction (clockwise/counter clockwise)?

And 3) best places to eat along the trail?

Training for TRT

I have weird baggage when it comes to TRT and I want to take it back. I have only hiked segments and 4 +years ago. Since then my health has declined and the partner who really guided me in all things outdoors is not longer. SO I need help to get back in shape, mentally and physically prepare (gear).
I looked at websites and great info but wondering if there are suggestions on how to train and prep from a beginner perspective.

I want to backpack-solo to with a group all the way thru-next summer would be great but I am not focused on speed just progress Any help, resources, books, references appreciated

Tahoe City->Echo lakes segment last weekend of October

What's up yall. I was wondering your thoughts/advice on the feasibility of a backpacking trip this next week in desolate. I know the best thing will be to check the weather the days before but do y'all think any parts of it will be sketchy with the ice/snow? Any tips?

I have all the gear for cold weather backpacking and I have spent a night in the snow. I would expect participation and I'm planning on bringing spikes and poles. also if anyone wants to do it and carpool msg me

Lake Tahoe Marathon - Ride Share

Hi

Is anyone here running the Lake Tahoe marathon on 10/20 and leaving the same day or early Monday for Sacramento Airport?

If you so, and you’re are open to a ride share I’ll gladly chip in for gas or pay a fee.

The bus trip is kinda brutal at 3+ hours.

Thanks in advance!

Chris

The fire closure is affecting things

I am told by my buddy who's on the trail, at 7pm tonight:

Made a detour around the fire closure.

Off at mile 20.5 a hitch a bus and a long walk up Tunnel Creek Road and I'm back on trail at mile 50.5

The mile# is referring to the FarOut app and I think Tahoe City is mile 0, so this is 20+ miles clockwise from there.

Kingsbury to big meadow phone service?

I have a small window to try to sneak in a small section hike before the end of summer. Without going too deep into it, I need to be able to send a few messages while I'm in this area. Anyone know if there are spots where t-mobile will work ?

For those who have hiked TRT...2 questions

What was 1) your favorite section, and 2) what you thought was the toughest section? Thanks.

Davis FIRE

Just so hikers are aware, there’s a massively building fire on the east side of Tahoe that is showing hotspots at Mount Rose ski resort which is very close to the TRT. it looks like it’s making a run uphill. I would plan accordingly.

TRT permit question

I'm trying to hike the TRT starting this Saturday from South Lake Tahoe. I called the office 7 days before the start of my hike as the website said to do, and left a message in order to get the permit. I didn't get a call back so I called again today but was told it was too late to get permit over the phone. The person who answered said we could get the permit in person during business hours but are closed Saturday, Sunday, and Monday (Labor Day). Our flight lands Friday night so by the time we get to South Lake Tahoe, they will be closed.

Does anyone have advice on what we could do? Thanks.

Is there free, uncovered, lightly guarded, parking at Heavenly?

I'm aware of this page https://tahoerimtrail.org/parking/ that talks about covered parking, but from context on this sub in older posts I thought folks implied there was free parking at Heavenly and then I think you start at Kingsbury North trail junction.

Heading out next week.

thx

Two-night trip suggestions on the TRT?

Hi all, any suggestions for your favorite two-night backpacking trip (10-15ish miles a day) on the TRT? I hiked the entire rim trail a couple of years ago and would like to take my partner there for a trip over labor day weekend. Thanks!

Echo Lake to Barker Pass question

Hey all, I’m hoping to hit this section in a few weeks (September 15-17) and have two questions: (1) is it safe to leave my vehicle at Barker Pass for three days? (2) what’s the water situation on the northern half? Is there a specific point where the water sources get more spaced out? I can carry 3 liters if I have to, but I prefer to only carry 1 liter at a time and just camel up big time at water sources. Is this doable? Thanks for any help.

Does it matter which map I get?

I've found a couple maps of the TRT so far. One is by National Geographic, and the other is by Tom Harrison maps. Is there any reason I should get one over the other? (I know it may seem unnecessary to ask, but I asked this about Glacier and someone gave a really great map recommendation!)

Water sources between Star Lake and Big Meadow

I'm planning to section hike from Kingsbury South to Big Meadow. Between Star Lake and Big Meadow are there reliable streams or springs to pull water from this time of year?

TRT in early Sept??

I spent a week on the TRT in mid July, got about half way around...decided to stop to make some adjustments to my gear/setup. I was wanting to get back out there to pick up where I stopped and try to finish. Is early Sept a good time to be on the trail? Thanks.

Luggage storage in Truckee or Tahoe City?

Hi! We're a couple from Europe and planning to do the TRT from Sep 2 to Sep 14, setting out from Tahoe City. We're flying into SFO and taking Amtrak to Truckee, so will have no rental car. Thinking thru the logistics we soon realised that we will need to find storage for a suitcase (for almost two weeks).

We have asked around at a number of Truckee hotels (where we would be spending at least two nights, one before and one or two after the hike) but it seems none will offer to hold luggage for more than a day or so.

Does anybody have suggestions for luggage storage in Truckee or Tahoe City? Your help will be very much appreciated.

They still enforcing the rules of no eMTB on the trails or did the nerds give it up and we can go out there and rip it?

I can't seem to find a mileage table for the TRT...

I must be missing something - unless circular trails rule this out :)

Anyway, I'm looking for something that defines a starting point that is mile 0 and then shows points of interest every few miles e.g. (and note I'm making up mileage in this table, please don't plan your trip off of this!)

MilePlace
0Echo Lake Chalet
6Lake Aloha
10Dicks Pass
20Small stream
...
50Tahoe City...
...
169Echo Lake Snow Park (so right before the finish at mile 0)

Dispersed Camping Locations near Tahoe City

Helllo! I have never done the TRT and am looking forward to start segment hiking it this summer as I live about an hour and a half from Lake Tahoe.

I'm struggling with the idea of finding a dispersed camping spot legally near Tahoe City. Any recommendations for that area? I saw an itinerary or two on this reddit that mention camping within 0.1 miles of the Tahoe City trailhead; that is what Im going for currently if you have any specific recommendations I appreciate it!

Pack weight... follow-up

Hey All... wanted to thank everyone again who replied to my previous post asking for input on my pack weight. I ended up with a pack that was 46/47 lbs fully loaded - and that was a mistake, it made hiking very tough, especially the climbs...and ultimately made it impossible to make the daily mileage I had hoped/planned on. I ended up doing just shy of 50% of the loop. I am going to adjust my set up, swap out some items, and eliminate everything possible to get down to a much lighter (and more sensible) set up...and then finish the 2nd half. The good news is that it was a great experience, I learned more in the first day on trail than I did researching for months leading up, met & talked to some nice people, and got to take in the beauty of the trail. Most impactful was that it was a much needed break and reset from the day-in/day-out grind...so happy I did it. Just got done & already looking forward to getting back out there. Thanks again!!

Section Hike echo lake to Tahoe city

Hi everyone! I’m doing a section hike from echo lake to Tahoe city. Any ideas on how to get back to the trailhead from Tahoe city? I looked into public transit but it looks like it would go to the Nevada side of the lake and cost a lot of money and time. Does anyone have experience using the third party shuttle service? Any advice or recs would be helpful!

Best 2 night section?

Hey gang!

Going to be on the west side of Tahoe and would love to do a 2 night trip before moving on. Any good recommendations for a two night west section? For reference I’m looking to do between 10-20 mi a day.

Happy with a good two night trip around Truckee if there’s something else outside of the rim!

Logistics question - where to start and what direction?

I'll be flying into Reno and then exiting to Sacramento and eventually Fresno (all via public transit or Uber). I was planning on starting at Spooner summit to break up the dry stretch, but does anyone have any other suggestions? Planning for 7-8 days with 2 resupply boxes sent through the mail (was thinking S Lake Tahoe and Tahoe City, hence not starting at those locations). Is it logistically hard to get to Spooner from Reno and from Spooner to Sacramento? I'm guessing I would need to get to Truckee or somewhere else to catch a bus.

Starting Next Week - Parking, Bear Can, Fire Question

Hey all,

I’ve got some unexpected free time next week and am thinking of doing a 6 day Thru of the TrT. Hoping y’all can answer a few quick questions:

  1. Current Fire Status - Is the Royal Fire causing closures? It sounds like its still small but I haven’t seen what trails are closed.

  2. I’m seeing mixed things about Bear Cans being required in the entire corridor or just desolation. I’d like to bring an Ursack instead of a BV, is this allowed as long as I don’t camp in Desolation?

  3. Where is the best place to park? Seems like most recommended Tahoe City but SLT would cut off some driving time. Can anyone give some specific places that would be good to leave a car for 5-6 days?

Thanks for the help!
