To clarify: I don’t mean Aang forcing Air Nomad beliefs on her. I mean Aang sharing this with her and always giving a reason behind each practice (not having a reason for the practices was her major issue with it in the comics). Also, Toph would be free to participate in as much or as little as she wanted to. In addition, perhaps this would inspire Toph to explore Earth Kingdom spirituality?
Who makes the first move? How does the other person react? How does this play out?
Let’s say Aang and Toph fell in love but they weren’t able to work things out(yet) bc of her commitment issues and their cultural differences. Aang started dating an air acolyte and they fell in love but it’s not like his love for Toph. They get engaged.
Does Aang:
OR
They’re so dang cute!!
Hypothetically let’s say that Aang and Toph have intense feelings for each other but they don’t commit and then go off to marry/have kids with other people because at this point they just don’t see how it could work. Aang marries an air acolyte and has a couple kids with her and Toph has Lin with Kanto. The air acolyte dies, Toph and Kanto break up, and then Aang and Toph find their way back to each other, work through their issues, and get married. They’ve decided that Aang will share the AN culture with all of the kids (not just the air bender ones) BUT 1) they get to participate in as much or as little as they want and 2) the reasoning behind the rituals and practices are always explained (Referring back to Toph’s resistance to AN culture in the Rift). They basically agree to listen to each kid and what that kid needs. Thus Aang is Lin’s stepdad and Aang is giving equal attention to all of the kids and Toph is working on being emotionally available for all of the kids too.
We know that Toph was emotionally unavailable as a mother and let her kids have too much freedom. We also know that Aang played favorites with his kids even though he could have still shared the air nomad culture with all 3 of them because it was their heritage. They could have been taught to practice the Monks’ teachings and celebrate the festivals. Kya could have learned from airbending to help improve her waterbending- just like Iroh did with learning to redirect lightning.
Do you think Aang and Toph could have held each other accountable to be better parents even if they were very flawed in their own ways?
Nearly 3 months ago, I made a post suggesting a work of art and forgot to post the link of the damn thing.

I apologize and I have created this post to remind fans to read the story. It’s a great piece of work.
I think they would have a rocky, messy road to making it work.
Sometime around their late teens/early 20s they would start to develop feelings. They would have a hard time making it official and they back off because it doesn’t work even though they have strong feelings for each other. They decide they don’t want to ruin their friendship, thus they stay friends but with boundaries. This breakup is one of the few times that Toph ever cries, but she doesn’t cry around Aang- either by herself or around Suki and Katara but no one else. They’ll still be there for each other and step in to call each other out if the other person really needs it, but they still keep their boundaries (especially while one of them is in a relationship). Aang eventually settles down with a nice Air Acolyte girl in his early to mid 20s. She’s perfectly nice and their relationship is very safe and sweet, but she’s not Toph. When Aang gets married, Toph insists that she can handle attending the wedding because she’s that stubborn and wants to prove that she’s fine with it (even though she’s not). Suki and Katara make sure to keep an eye on Toph so she doesn’t do anything stupid like object at the wedding or make a cringey toast. Toph gets drunk and hooks up with someone at the wedding to keep herself occupied. Afterwards, Suki and Katara take Toph on a girl’s trip to go do something fun (maybe the Beach house on Ember Island because Katara is married to Zuko so she can use this anytime she wants? Or would this have too many memories associated with Aang?). Aang and the air acolyte have a couple kids and they’re happy. Aang and Toph do a good job at maintaining boundaries out of respect for Aang’s marriage - meanwhile Toph starts seeing Kanto (not sure what their romance was like, just that Toph said that he was a nice man and things didn’t work). Aang’s wife dies (not sure how) right around when Toph has Lin. Either shortly before or after Lin’s birth, Toph and Kanto break up. Fast forward to their mid 30s - Aang and Toph start to reconnect and start seeing each other. Toph gets pregnant and this time they finally decide to make it work between them and they elope. When Aang dies, this is one of the other few times in her life when she cries and she says “Goodbye Twinkle Toes.”
Thoughts?
Do you think working through this could help either of them grow?
Hi Taang fans!
I welcome you to my new subreddit:
r/LoveInAvatar !
The topic of the sub is all romance in the Avatar Universe. Whether it be endgame, canon but separated, non-canon, polyships, oc x character, or any other pairings. This includes Toph x Aang. Fans can come share fanart, fanfiction, discuss their couples, and more.
If you're interested, then come and join!
Our former mod somehow got banned from Reddit (poor guy) which caused the users to not be able to post and the subreddit to be in an increased state of stagnation.
Fortunately, I convinced the mods to let me handle the sub.
So feel free to share your posts on here.
This story contains an older version of the Avatar and the greatest Earthbender in the world, meaning that they’re both of age.
I read this three years ago back in July 2020 and it was a great read, one of the best forms of literature that I’ve read in my life… and I don’t read that much.
LOL 😂
I hope you guys enjoy it, I sure did!
(Also, I didn’t write this fanfic. Just wanna make that clear. It came out in September 2009, I was just a dumb six-year-old who could barely write at the time. LOL 😂)
Let me know what you guys think of the story in the comments below! I’d love to hear your thoughts!
The story is found in the comment section of this post below!
For "Members" You could put: "Taangers" and for "Online" You could put: "Drinking Orange Juice"
just a suggestion :)
Let's admit it, this sub died a month or two ago
OKAY besides the point that air and earth are complementary opposites and interconnected, I've been thinking about why Taang is the superior ship.
Ever since I rewatched the series on Netflix, all the Taang feels have resurfaced and I have SO MUCH TO SAY WHY THEY'RE AMAZING.
Whereas with Toph, she helps Aang become more confident and standing up to others. Before meeting Toph, Aang avoided confrontation (to the point where it wasnt necessarily good for him). After meeting Toph and having her teach him, she helps Aang face up to confrontation. She helps him become stronger as a person and a bender.
One of the reasons why I'm not a Kataang fan, is I feel like Katara almost holds Aang back not only as a bender but as a person. She's constantly always trying to "protect" him from pain, from evil, etc. (There's episodes where I can back this up) But I feel like Toph is the perfect person to not hold him back. She helps him become a stronger bender and person. They would balance each other out to the point where it won't be too reckless nor too disciplined. It's just the right amount for fun, freedom, love, passion, and excitement.
At the mention of having fun, Toph and Aang have SO MUCH FUN TOGETHER IN THE SHOW. There's something so special about having the ability to have fun and laugh with another person despite the things going on around them (Firelord Ozai and all). They always manage to smile, laugh, and have fun together despite their situation and THAT IS SO IMPORTANT in a couple.
I feel like though yes, Toph is extremely independent and headstrong but she also really wants to feel loved, cherished, and supported. She really just wants her parents and those close to her to love her and support who she is. Aang is that perfect person. He would love her, cherish her, and support her. He'd be so perfect for her 🥺
ALSO, not to mention that Toph recognized Kora as Aang when she first meets her. AND she goes to the swamp where Aang first envisions her to live out the rest of her life. She wanted to be near Aang, to remember him.
Point is, I ship them so hard. I feel like ATLA missed out on the opportunity of this perfect ship. If the writers focused on Taang as a couple, there could've been SO MANY opportunities and things to do with this ship.
Taang does not get enough love. They deserve SO MUCH. I feel like yeah, Zutara is great and all, but as a couple (balancing each other out, strengthening/pushing each other, the passion) Taang absolutely takes the cake.
I'm a writer and I'm definitely going to start writing some Taang content, since there's not nearly enough. ☺ so I'll make sure to inform you guys if you want to read it.
Feel free to add anything I missed about Taang!! I know I've missed a bunch but that's been on my mind while rewatching the show 😅
