("Tandy/Radio Shack, Z-80 microprocessor") was a brand associated with several desktop microcomputer lines sold by Tandy Corporation through their Radio Shack stores. The original "TRS-80 Micro Computer System" launched in 1977 (later known as the Model I) was one of the earliest mass-produced personal computers.[2] The first units, ordered unseen, were delivered in November 1977, and rolled out to the stores the third week of December. The line won popularity with hobbyists, home users, and small-businesses.
The Radio Shack TRS-80 Color Computer (also marketed as the Tandy Color Computer and affectionately nicknamed CoCo and Trash-80) was a home computer launched in 1980. It was one of the earliest of the first generation of computers marketed for home use in English-speaking markets. While the model was eventually eclipsed by the onset of the IBM PC clones, enthusiasts have continued to tinker with the "CoCo" to the present day.

does anyone know of any good in depth dives on the coding behind this game?
Computer functioned before the caps blew up, Replaced the caps with some standard X2 rated safety caps of the correct compacitance
and im still getting nothing out of the screen and the power supply is making a very slight clicking noise
Ive verified the caps were soldiered correctly And i cant find any shorts in the board
The clicking is coming from the relay side of the board
Tryin to upgrade from 4k to 16k. Just wondering where everyone sources their ram? Do they make new or is it all old stock. If you have a link to it that would be great.
Pic for attention lol
Sorta self explanitory
Cheaper machine and cheaper paper are ideal, but thats about it
When I turn on my model 3 this is what I get. Any ideas where I begin troubleshooting? I haven't used a TRS-80 since I was in grade school but am pretty adept with old computers. I presently have it partially disassembled and want to make sure I am not missing something obvious/easy/simple before I go any further.
Last year my wife's grandfather gave me his TRS-80 and over 100 floppies for it. They contain about 30 years of business records, as he used this computer to run his business from 1984 to 2013. I want to archive them, but I've tried to do it myself and it's just a mess.
I've tried all the advice I can find online for doing it myself, I've spent the better part of $500 building a computer that I thought would do the job, and it just won't read them.
Does anyone have the equipment, and the time, to archive these disks? I'm willing to pay for the service.
Is Ira Goldklang still around (the trs-80.com guy)? I sent him an email but I'm not optimistic that I'll get a response.
Edit: just want to put this where someone can see it. Ira's still around! I'm sending my disks to him.
I also had a war game that I ordered from a magazine. I think it may have been ww2 but I can't be sure. I know you could fire mortars and had troops. It may have been alphanumeric graphics. Good luck. I know it's not much to go on.
I had a coco 2 in the 80s it had a 5.25" disk drive add on. I had detective game that I cannot remember the name of. I seem to remember that you could travel to different locations and that one of them was beach front toe city. Any clues?
Hi everyone,
I'm in the process of repairing a TRS-80 Model 3 for a friend of mine, and I could use some assistance please. It's a US model with 48k RAM and two 5.25" FDDs, which my friend imported to the UK.
I've fitted replacement ribbons for the mainboard, disk controller, and serial controller using a kit from Ian Mavric (The Right Stuff). I've also fitted a PSU upgrade kit to replace the two original PSUs with a single MeanWell SMPS, from Jay Newirth (newSOFT). I've cleaned and lubricated the brightness and contrast controls, as they were seized up.
I've managed to get the system booting into the onboard ROM, the display works nicely and all the keyboard keys seem to work correctly.
Both of the disk drives spin up at startup, then stop when I go into BASIC, however the heads don’t seem to be stepping and the drives don’t seem to be attempting to read disks. I moved the heads out manually when the unit is off, but they don’t try to move back to their home position on startup.
I removed both of the drive units and both of the stepper assemblies were frozen, so I've freed and lubricated them and they move easily now - I've also cleaned the heads, the LED assemblies, and the track 0 switches, no change.
I've also tried manually stepping the drive 0 and drive 1 heads respectively using the BASIC programs below, but the head doesn't move on either drive:
5 REM Drive 0 10 OUT 244,1: OUT 240,3 20 FOR T=1 TO 700: NEXT T 30 OUT 244,1: OUT 243,40: OUT 240,19 40 FOR T=1 TO 700: NEXT T: GOTO 10
5 REM Drive 1 10 OUT 244,2: OUT 240,3 20 FOR T=1 TO 700: NEXT T 30 OUT 244,2: OUT 243,40: OUT 240,19 40 FOR T=1 TO 700: NEXT T: GOTO 10
The following programs should turn on the drive 0 and drive 1 motors and activity LEDs respectively. 10 OUT 244,1:GOTO 10 10 OUT 244,2:GOTO 10 However, both motors run for either line, and the activity LEDs don’t seem to come on.
I've also tried reading the track 00 detector circuit status using the BASIC program suggested by Idkraemer in the following thread, but instead of showing "2" when the head is off track 00 and "6" when the head is on track 00, it shows "3". 5 REM Drive 0 10 OUT 244,1: PRINT INP(240): OUT 240,3 20 FOR T= 1 TO 600: NEXT T: PRINT INP(240) https://forum.vcfed.org/index.php?threads/trs-80-model-3-disk-drive-issues.1239489/
Does anyone have any recommendations of how to proceed, please?
Given both drives exhibit the same symptoms when in the drive 0 position, could it be a fault with the disk controller board and not the drives?
The two drives are both Texas Peripheral FDDs.
Thanks to Larry on the VCFED forums for the BASIC programs!
Many thanks, Adam
I played Deathmaze 5000, Labyrinth, Asylum 1 & 2 back in the day. Would love to play them again. Can someone please suggest a way of playing that they have tested and works? I dabbled last weekend with various emulators and couldn't get it working. TIA
I just got a new for me trs80 pc-2 and it has been worked 100% great for about 6 hours and the it just decided to not want to switch from program mode to run mode and it is driving me insane, i am a student and im planning to use it as a powerful calculator and i cant really do it while in program mode, i tried full resetting it, i tried swapping batteries and nothing happens
please if you know something that can help me please leave it in the comments
Ok, so I was 12 years old ad didn't have a sense of 'dont copy that floppy' yet. I believe it was CocoMax3 on a floppy, and after about 20 uses or so, it recognized it was a floppy and called my 12yo self out on it. I didn;t pirate again until I was an adult.
Anybody else remember that? I recall it specifically because I had a coco2 forever, and could finally afford a coco3 when they went down to $99.
Hello all, I just purchased a Coco 2 in box for a good price on fb marketplace. Sadly, when going to test I receive no video. I checked my video cables and everything works with a C64 on rf so I opened the coco. When plugged in and powered on, none of the chips get warm at all other than U1, and it gets pretty warm (almost too hot to hold my finger). Using the service manual I tested the right side of R2 and got .88v. Testing Q1 I get 13.1v. Am I correct to assume U1 is bad and needs to be replaced? Also is 13v high for Q1? I can’t find any information on what it is supposed to be.
This link was posted in /r/datahoarder - it's great. I remember how excited I was when a new computer catalog came out and how I savored every page, picture, and product description.
This catalog was peak TRS-80, imho https://www.radioshackcatalogs.com/flipbook/c1981_rsc-04.html
Enjoy.
I recently restored a model 3 and while trying to make some disks for booting and software access, I have run into some very odd behaviour and issues with the trs80-62 emulator when interacting with both virtual and physical disks.
-I booted the emulator into NewDOS/80 without issue and when attempting to copy the newdos image to a physical disk in the emulator, I would get "write fault" errors for every sector IF I answered yes to formatting first. If I formatted first then copied without formatting, the copy would throw a write fault error every 154 sectors but could be continued OK, upon trying to boot the created disk in a real machine, this disk did work. I still don't know why it threw the errors or if they may have had an affect on some parts of the created disk.
-While trying to put some games on a disk, I copied various files onto a .dsk file by way of TRStools, ended up with a 500KB file. when mounting this file to the trs80-62 emulator, it said that the disk was completley unreadable. This or similar unusable behaviour was the same regardless of settings used when creating the disk in TRStools, I have not been able to get this to work in any form yet.
Does anybody know what could be causing this or if there are some alternative solutions for getting software onto the machine if I can't this to work (preferably without investing in any extra hardware) (maybe using the serial port somehow?)
System information: using a generic Slot 1 motherboard with 400Mhz pentium ii, running MS DOS off a 1.44MB floppy with the emulator and virtual files on said floppy as well; using a tandon TM100 floppy drive with 360KB 5.25 disks, originally formatted for PC but I did check that they are all free of errors; using old ISA addin card with a floppy controller that I tested to be OK for single-density writing. (motherboard's onboard controller disabled in BIOS)
Hi all posted a week ago with no fix. I do have overheating in Q3 which means according to manual there is a short in the ram power supply on right side of board.
My question is is there anybody who I can send this to to fix it? I'm a college student and collect computers and I want to see this working with the display. I will pay and send all parts I have.
Any input would be appreciated!
I am dying for a dose of nostalgia to play 13 Ghosts or... Space Warp or evev play with Talking Eliza to compare her to ChatGPS. I used to have a blast in high school with my Model III.
My dad only bought me the Model 4 for college because it cost less than putting a Drive 0 into the Model III. I used that well into the early days of the PCs. I only gave up on it when Radio Shack started refusing to re-align my floppy drives. They were positioned vertically, which meant gravity killed them all the time.
I used to be pretty savvy, but I've lost much of my skill in recent years. I've been lond of hoping that those TRS-80 Retropies have the games and such I'm looking for pre-loaded.
Does anyone know what's on those? Or of an emulator and image that can be run on a slightly older laptop by a gal that isn't the worst but is also not the best techie?
Thank you! Sam
So I thought it was broken because of the line, but it turns out the seller took that picture while power it off, upon inserting a diskette, it works fine! What disks and games do I get???
