Hi, I’ve had a look on the website and I’ve rang Swinburne but I haven’t been able to get a proper answer on this. Does anybody know what requirements id need for my laptop for a bachelor of engineering? Currently expecting to specialise in mechanical. Thank you

Good electives for final semester?

Hi all, I'm about to start my final semester, I was really hoping to complete the propaganda unit but Swinburne just changed the course code and I can't add it to my plan. Anyway good, easy or interesting electives I can take for the credits?

I'm hoping to start a bachelor of engineering/bachelor of computer science next year - will I be likely to need my high school casio classpad calculator? I'd like to sell it but I won't if I'm going to need it

Bathroom hygiene/etiquette.

After a late-night study session in the Swinburne Library, I was absolutely appalled by the state of the men’s bathroom. One urinal was overflowing with what appeared to be either vomit or some revolting cocktail of body fluids—already enough to make anyone gag. But then, in the middle cubicle, it got worse. Someone had taken a dump all over the toilet seat, leaving what can only be described as a mountain of human feces smeared across the seat, lid, and walls of the cubicle. The sheer amount was so excessive that whoever did it should probably seek medical attention, unless—disgustingly enough—it was the work of more than one person. The stench was nauseating, and the sight was utterly disgusting. Whoever thought this was acceptable behavior is nothing short of vile. My heart goes out to the cleaners who have to face that atrocity. Seriously, has bathroom etiquette completely vanished, or are we just living among human pigs?

Thinking of Transferring Universities – Need Advice on Deakin, RMIT, or Swinburne for Mechatronics

Hey everyone,

I’m an international student currently studying a Bachelor of Science (Mechatronics Engineering major) at the University of Melbourne. Unfortunately, I’m not enjoying my time here, and I’m seriously considering transferring to a more hands-on Bachelor of Mechatronics Engineering program at either DeakinRMIT, or Swinburne.

Here’s my situation:

  • I’m not too concerned about university rankings.
  • My WAM isn’t great. I struggle with exams and prefer practical, project-based learning over the traditional “study-the-book, solve-questions, and give exams” approach.
  • I’m unsure about pursuing a master’s degree, so I’m focusing on job opportunities after completing my bachelor's.
  • I’m also curious about the campus environment—are the people at these universities friendly and welcoming? How’s the general vibe there for international students?

I’d really appreciate your input on these universities in terms of:

  1. Course structure (especially practical vs. theoretical balance).
  2. Learning environment and support for students like me who find exams challenging.
  3. Job opportunities and industry connections after graduating from their programs.
  4. Campus culture and community—do you feel like it’s easy to make friends and connect with others?
  5. Any hurdle requirements and if they manageable?

If you’ve studied or know someone who studied mechatronics at these unis, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Any advice or personal experiences would be super helpful!

Thanks in advance 😊

Is this normal when switching degrees?

I was doing a double degree with psych sciences, then applied to just do a degree with psych sciences and not the double. I got accepted but it hasn’t transferred my already completed core units. I’m a bit confused, will this happen automatically or will I have to talk to someone?

Bachelor of Social Science Criminology or Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice

Does anyone know what is the main difference? I see the different subjects but overall what are the different outcomes of the degrees?

Thanks

Study type

Hi guys, I just wanted to know how the studies are at Swinburne (Melb, Computer science). Cuz at deakin, I've read that there are barely any in person lectures, most of them are just online, and the only reason you attend the campus is for "doubts" or "seminars". May I know what the case for swinburne is, especially for Computer science?

Is a 1hr 20m commute too long in you guys's opinions?

If so would it be worth me moving out of home to stay at student accommodation?

Thank you

Transfer from Swinburne Online to Swinburne Hawthron On-Campus?

I am currently studying with Swinburne Online and I am thinking of transferring to on-campus. If anyone in this subreddit group has gone through this process, how was it? Also, what is the minimum requirement for the internal transfer because there is no specific guideline on the official website (e.g. average GPA or WAM)...?

Missing orientation?

I've gotten an early entry offer for compsci next year, and from what I see semester one starts 3rd March and orientation is the week prior.

If I'm on holiday getting back about the 28th of February,

  1. Will I miss orientation
  2. Is it a big deal if I do? If so, would it be worth rescheduling my flights?

Thank you :)

Update: accused of ChatGPT plagiarism

Hey everyone, first off thanks for the advice, everyone was super helpful!

I was able to contact student advocacy who in turn asked me to have a session with LAS who went through my paper, and talked about not only if it was AI in her opinion, but also how to improve it, going way overtime to help me out which was really nice of her. When I finally got to the informal review, it turns out one of my nagging thoughts was actually true, being that the convenor had actually hidden a red herring in the assignment guideline, to try and catch out AI use (which obviously didn't work here). The report prompt had hidden text that was not visible from a standard look at the pdf. How I realised it was there was to copy and paste the prompt into my one note when I was planning the report, which automatically formats whatever you copy and paste with your one notes default setting. The convenor actually tried to catch me out on this and tried playing semantics, asking me if I coped and pasted any of it at all, to which i said only the prompt, and then he goes into a tirade of how if I didn't actually copy and paste anything then I wouldn't have known the hidden part was there, to which I reminded him I already said I copied it. The really annoying part however, was at the end, when they asked if I had any questions, I asked if they had hidden that there to catch AI use, as well as the ethicalities of a red herring, to which the convenor says he isn't able to discuss this at the moment??? Super weird and cagey.

TLDR: Convenor planted red herring in the assessment guideline to catch AI use, but did it in a stupid way

Any disadvantages in starting the year on Semester 2?

I'm an international student going to begin my master's in semester 2, but I feel anxious about doing so since I might miss important classes or pre-requisites. I also worry that it may be harder for me to make friends. Any advice?

Online study and living overseas

I'm currently studying with Swinburne online, and my partner has been offered an amazing job in Kuala Lumpur, so we've been considering moving over there. Will I still be able to complete my studies even though we've living OS, or is that a no no for Swinburne online?

Hey all, Got an early entry offer for computer science, planning on majoring in software development. Just wanting to ask what my chances are of getting work integrated learning as part of my degree? Really wanting to get some work placement while I'm in uni.

Need help understanding the credit system.

So my core units have 12.5 credit points each and there's the usual grading system for each unit HD, D, C etc. Does the grades reduce the number of credit points I get? I did not see this mentioned in their website. Or is it like as long as I pass I get the 12.5 credit points? If that is the case then how does the grades effect my overall degree?
New 1st year bachelor student btw, don't know much.
