Looking to see if anyone has a good resource or videos to look into for a user guide for the Trimble S5. Changed from the M3 to the S5 a couple months ago. I never received any formal training with it and know it can do a lot more than I typically use it for. Just want to be able to use the machine to its full potential and make sure I understand what it’s doing. I know they have classes for the instruments but was hoping there was a supplemental resource in the mean time.
Finally getting some property survey experience in!
Not pictured is the total station lol
Hello everyone.
I'm looking for another CAD program that can do this exactly thing. We are doing earthworks calculations by creating sufraces using manually drawn 3D polylines.
Is there any other software on the market that can do that?
I'm sorry for lack of "industry language", English is not my native and I'm trying to keep this as simple as I can.
Hi my neighbour has sent me this copy of his surveying report as I’m encroaching on his property (right hand side), I’ve applied for title insurance and they are asking for m2 of encroachment. Can anyone help me work out how much? Thanks
Hi everyone, I was reading a discussion in this subreddit and wanted to know if someone can explain me how setup your site on a known coordinate system using opus or a reference network and what relationship or difference is with an calibration site made with rtk data and total station.
Hey, how's it going people? I hope you are doing great. See, some friends and I decided to start doing surveying and topography-related works. We are civil engineers students so our budget ain't that great. Although we know (and we used the equipment that our university got, let's say Theodolite, total station, optical-levels) how to operate all of this stuff, we are not sure how to properly analyze the condition of the equipment since the tools that our college provided to us were pretty old and used (sometimes kinda though to operate with). We are really grateful to your answer.
Looking forward to all of ur comments. Bless ya'all!
I’m in the military and my unit doesn’t have this kind of equipment MTOE, got all kinds of Trimble fanciness that can scan and tilt though. Wondering if you guys know of any decent priced survey grade levels (and rods) I could pick up for personal use and maybe take on deployments. Thanks in advance!
I’ve never surveyed over in Kansas before. I’m used to getting on Missouri ArcGIS for DNR control to tie into. Anyone know the link to the Kansas version? I’m struggling to find it.
Our testing company recieved and .spj file. I believe this is Trimbles project file, correct? If so, how can I import it into Civil3D?
My engineering firm recently came into new survey equipment. Two R12's, two R12i's, a TSC7 and a TSC5.
When I try to calibrate the IMU bias for one of the R12i's I always get stuck on "Waiting to start" and nothing happens? Anyone know why?
My other R12i consistently goes through the whole calibration process using the same steps with no problems.
Cheers,
Ryan
Where could I find 60+ year old HWY projects or maps? I search my county register of deeds and backscanned deeds with no luck. Thanks
I hope this is an appropriate place to ask my question, if not I apologize. I purchased a townhome in 2012 that was built in 2008. I have a copy of the original plat for the community from 2008. It makes clear that I own 2096 square feet.
Several years ago, my county taxes increased substantially, knocking me from in the middle of the tax paid by residents to near the top. After multiple refusals from the county to lower my taxes, I was told they have a different square footage than my 2096 sq ft. They will not give me amount of sq ft they are charging me for. There are public parking spaces that are abutting my property that I suspect they have added to my square footage. Is there any way I can find out my true sq ft and prove it to the taxing authority? I don't know what my next step should be and would appreciate any help.
I understand it's quite the process, and it could take months. And I'm aware there is a USAJobs subreddit for help.
With that said, I'm just looking for some tips and advice for the application process as the job is in the surveying field. TIA
hey everyone, i’ve been working in Civil 3D for a bit now, and i know how many little tricks and shortcuts there are that can make survey drafting way smoother. i thought it’d be cool to start a thread where we can all share tips, tricks, and best practices for surveying in Civil 3D. whether it’s about managing point groups, surface edits, or automating linework, there’s always something new to learn.
i’ll kick things off with one of my go-to tricks:
Using description keys for automatic linework – by setting up a solid description key set, you can have your linework automatically drawn in when importing field data. it saves so much time cleaning up and connecting the dots later. plus, if you set your symbols and layers right in the description key file, you’ll save a ton of hassle with drafting consistency.
anyway, what tips or workflows do you use to make survey drafting in Civil 3D less of a grind? looking forward to hearing everyone’s ideas!

Hey folks,
Hoping for some insight from those who have started their own shops. I am the number two guy at 5-10 person firm (only one holding any commissions besides the owner), looking to go off on my own at some point in the next year or so if I can't get a better deal financially in my current role. There's other frustrations/reasons as well, but not the point of this post.
I feel I've got a pretty good handle on the business side, in my current position I'll quote projects, run them start to finish and then assess the margins after the fact. I know all of the expenses, and I have a pretty good idea of what the owner takes home every year.
One of my main concerns right now for planning is this: many of our big repeat clients were brought in by me, and deal directly with me on all of their work. The owner hasn't even met most of them. I aim to be able to "bring them with me" since I have no formal work contract, non-compete, etc. that would prevent anything of the sort. However, there's almost always work on the go with these clients, so how do I go about cutting ties with my current firm without leaving these clients stranded halfway through ongoing projects? Do I just try to time my exit in a way that minimizes impact to these clients?
Thanks for any insights!
Hello fellow surveyors.
I'm a crew chief in PA and the breadwinner in my household. With absolutely no notice at all, I, another chief, and an instrument operator were laid off first thing this morning. The 2 chiefs with seniority remain. The boss has been talking non stop about how busy it's about to be, but now this.
We still live check to check and this is literally the worst time of year for this to happen. The company does very well, it feels like a massive slap in the face that they decided to boot us with hope that work will pick up in January and we'll be back. "Employee Appreciation Day" is next Wednesday lol. I've experienced lulls in activity before but not an official separation.
I don't know if I could ever trust them again to be honest, but I also don't know if I'll be able to hold on for that long, my next check will only be half what it normally is, and they offered absolutely no severance or assistance. Unemployment will probably not pay anything until beyond January based on how it usually goes in this state.
Words of encouragement, leads, and advice are very welcome. I am very very scared that I will lose everything during this time if I can't immediately find a comparable position.
Any recommendations on study materials from those who’ve taken the test? This bad boy is $375 to take and i want to make sure I’m studying the right books! My first round taking the SIT, I failed because I was spending too much time on the wrong books. Don’t want that to happen especially with how expensive this one is!
Hello from Croatia fellow surveyors!
I've been working as a land surveyor the last 20 years, and for a while now, been curious about finding a job as an offshore surveyor (on ships). However, no matter who I talk to or what I google online, I just can't seem to find any useful information.
So I would be very grateful for any information anyone has here, regarding to any helpful sites where I could apply for a job, or some offshore companies websites, or basically any useful information that could help me towards finding a job as a offshore surveyor (in Europe, as I'm not sure if it's possible to apply outside of EU, tho I wouldn't be against that either).
Thanks in advance for the help :)
Any way to do this besides double-tapping on screen (or long-pressing screen)?
Well I've started my first res school at USQ this week and quite enjoying the field work this week. It's nice to actually put things into practice. Everyone is supportive and helpful.
But apart from practicing over and over again, what's the best way to get faster at things? I've realized I'm absolutely useless at setting up a tripod and have already nearly broken my thumb. It seems 20 years of software development has destroyed my ability to use a hammer. How do I deal with imposter syndrome?
Hey guys I'm looking for people to help with the comic or our other land survey media. Reach out if you're interested. Also visit our merch store to help fund future endeavors!
Is it just me, or does NCEES love (select all the apply) style of questions? Jeez!
Hi yall, I have a quick question. In carlson, if I delete a point from my drawing but it stays in my coordinate file, will it factor into my surface?
In anyone aware of a program for the HP 33s that converts tenths to inches?
Here are a few photos of an old angle measuring device. I am trying to find the brand and model of it but there are no inscriptions on it.
2012 GMC sierra, by far the worst I've come across. I miss the Colorado at my last company.
Inquiring for oil and gas. Heard the term used( not sure if spelt correctly. How is it conducted using a hydrovac truck? Any input appreciated
